Description
Era - 1940s / 1950s - Boxing - Heayvweight

One of the pound for pound most violent punchers of his time, Bob Satterfield took on an impressive list of opponents in his career, with the approach that he was going to seek the knockout, either in victory, or in defeat. Undersized at Heavyweight and with a questionable chin, Satterfield was still a threat to any opponent.

Born in St. Louis in 1923, Satterfield became a product of the Chicago boxing scene, winning the Chicago Golden Gloves in 1941 and served in the United States Army in World War II from '42 to '45, and became a professional boxer in the latter year. Satterfield became a fixture in the nightlife of the city, an avid Jazz fan and art student who became friends with the legendary Miles Davis and was well known for partying with Duke Ellington and Count Basie's bands. Satterfield's connections would even end up linking Muhammad Ali with his first wife.

Seeking excitement outside the ring(to the extent that his training suffered as a result) Satterfield rarely failed to bring it within the ropes. Losses to Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Jake LaMotta, Joey Maxim and Rex Layne were juxtaposed with wins over full sized Heavyweights in Cleveland Williams and Nino Valdes. He would split series with Harold Johnson and Lee Oma, as well.
