Description
"I'll show you the way!"

The Guide, the helpful pathfinder that shepards the wayward adventurer's of Terraria to their fortunes. With an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the land and an optimistic outlook of the future, he is the fundamental cornerstone of any Terrarian settlement.

Oh, Hello.

Here we are again, posting to the workshop like I did many years ago. This project was a bit of a spur of the moment affair. I was going to wait until when Journey's End was announced before beginning work on this. It caught me by surprise, and though I was hesitant at first, I settled in to making this.

Originally, the intent was to simply finish off an old derelict boss or some such I had waiting on me. However, given that this is a rather important Terraria update, I decided instead to craft something that felt a bit more special. Given the lack of anything other than Terraria bosses, the Guide felt like an obvious choice.

I've gotten quite a bit better at modeling since the last time I made anything. I sought out paid courses and worked on improving my technique. I think the results are better, but still not good enough that I'd call this particularly inspired.

This project got away from me rather quickly. The original concept was way more ambitious. I had all sorts of extra props and environments planned. I ended up canning most of it and pushing for a release instead, I simply couldn't maintain the stamina required to build a fully realized landscape.

It's also been 3 years since I had posted anything. Much of my SFM/Source skills have diminished, so this entry will probably end up being a bit mediocre. I apologize ahead of time for any rough edges.

To anyone who's curious, I left the workshop a long while back because working on these projects proved to be physically stressful, and ended up aggravating a pre-existing condition. I ended up developing significant health problems as a result. I was hoping I would be able to return, but it appears working on this stuff hasn't really changed. It's just as taxing as it ever was.

What does this mean for the future of my workshop? I'm not really sure. I've partly moved on to greener pastures, with new hobbies and interests that aren't as demanding. If I return to workshopping, it will be different than it was before. Less frequent, less involved, and probably more hyper focused on personal projects. It's unlikely I'll make that much more Terraria stuff.

I would like to say, Thank you, for all the support. I never expected this many people to enjoy what I made. I hope the Guide ends up being something special that people enjoy as much as the bosses.

As for me, I'll be waiting on Journey's End, probably after I slink back to my hovel in the mountains like the workshop hermit that I am.

Notes

-The Guide is my first fully realized character model with facial animation. Due to the mystical nature of the process and the bugginess of the tools, the facial flexes only half work. I don't really know how to fix this.

-The Guide lacks any presets, as I have no idea how to make those. You can, as far as I know, create your own(and I encourage others to do so).

-The Guide's body is fully bodygrouped, allowing you to turn off each section in the event you want to suit him up in armor or modify his clothing.

-The Guide's skeleton works with the simple rig script, and as such no rig script will be provided.

-The Guide skeleton supports a left and right weapon bone, for attaching the wooden bow weapon.

-The Guide uses a new lightwarp that adds active cooling to the shadowed regions. This effect is quite pronounced, and differs greatly from the default lightwarp I use on the bosses. You can switch this out if you think the effect looks weird.

-The wooden bow and arrow are holdovers from something else I had planned. They are included as is, and should function without any issues. The Wooden Bow can attach to either weapon bone.

-The wooden arrow is a fairly simple arrow sized to fit the wooden bow.

-The tree props were the only finished props I had from the environment phase I had mapped out. They turned out way too good to not release, but were too simple and one note to include in their own pack. I included them with the Guide instead.

-The book is an oddball, originating in 2016 when I originally mapped out a Guide submission. This was before Re-Logic had released the lore for Terraria. I partly came up with this idea because the Guide's profile and character design was extremely plain. The concept was that the Guide was extremely knowledgeable because he had found a book(which I dubbed the Terrarinomicon) that allowed him to look up every conceivable thing in the world of Terraria. With this magic book, he would lead the adventurers to a promised land where they would ultimately fight off the evils of the world.

-In spite of the new lore that dictates Guides are a dime a dozen, I decided to finish off the book model anyway and push it into the submission to give the Guide some extra characterization.

-The book features working covers that can be opened with sample pages inside. It's mostly just lorem Ipsum and some quick sketches I did. The font is JSL Blackletter.

-The book has a copper latch that keeps the book shut during travel. I assume if he's outdoors a lot, he'd want to keep his book locked up.

-There is also a middle page bodygroup for the book, which allows you to "turn" the page of the book proper.

-The middle page is blank, meaning you also gain the source textures used to make the pages. This means you can copy those blank pages and fill them out with your own text and pictures.

The original concept and design of "Guide" is the intellectual property of "Re-Logic".

... and before I forget, Thank you Orbital for inspiring me to make the Guide!

Weird, for some reason I was unsubscribed to this entry.

@Hatikyu, I think I understand. Yeah, I didn't care much for the trading card design of the Guide. I decided to try blending him together from different fan arts and my own interpretation of how he should look. I tried to pick something closer to Jak and Ratchet from the PS2 era games.

@Mork, The background is the absolute edge of the Degroot Keep map. Took me a while to find a suitable background angle.

How do you get the background?
