Welcome... To Kraken's Better Dinos
Hello there you beautiful human being you, thank you so much for coming to check out my guide to my humble little mod.

Kraken's Better Dinos originated as just a way for me to make the oceans of Ark a little less... annoying, but soon spiralled into what you see now, a quality of life semi-overhaul mod that touches in many different ways a vast majority of the Vanilla dinos in Ark. Sometimes making small beneficial tweaks, or fixing long forgotten base game bugs, to some complete overhauls that completely change the way you use your dino friends in the game. The overall aim is to give use and meaning to some dinos who have been left behind by time or never really had a niche to call their own before. I have also introduced a few new unique dinos to either plug the holes in progression caused by the betterment of some others, or just because I wanted to make them such as the additional Tek Dinos introduced by the mod.

Kraken's Better Dinos, or KBD as it will be referred to from here on in, is designed to enhance the largely vanilla style of gameplay. What I refer to as 'Vanilla with sprinkles' and is based around official server rates for its balancing. The mod is largely PvE focused as that is how I play and what I know. It can be used in conjunction with other larger overhaul mods but be aware that there may be some conflicts, and can of course be used for PvP servers although there are some changes I have made that some servers may find detrimental to PvP or other styles of play other than the aforementioned 'Vanilla with Sprinkles'

With this in mind I have provided a large amount of customisation abilities done largely through the GameUserSettings.Ini with the ability to tweak most individual changes to dinos, or to disable the KBD version all together. All .Ini options will be included along with the various changes made to the dinos later on in the guide in their own individual sections.

It should be noted here that all the changes I make will only effect vanilla dinos except in some very rare cases which will be noted where applicable. I categorically do not intentionally make changes to dinos created by other mods, nor do I ever intend to, although I am happy to try and make KBD able to co-habitate with other mods where I can, and there are other authors that I work closely with in this regard. The main example being 'No Untamables' by Myrmecoleon who has not only helped immensely with the creation of large parts of this mod, but also has similar ideals for their own mods, and therefore we both strive to maintain full compatibility between KBD and NU as they complement each other very well. If you haven't already I would strongly suggest checking out No Untamables and I will provide a link later on in this guide.

KBD makes changes to dinos using a variety of different methods, each one having its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • Default Buffs: This is by far my preferred method of making changes to dinos, and is the most common method I use. Buffs are relatively lightweight, easily added, easy to work with, and can be used to make a wide range of changes to dinos. There are lots of changes I make via buffs that many other mods needlessly create whole new dinos to be able to do. The main advantage of making changes via buffs is that should the mod be removed, the buff just goes away and the affected dinos just go back to being completely vanilla again. The biggest disadvantage is that although there are lots and lots of things that I can do using them, I can't do everything with them. Some dinos just have too much internal logic that is not exposed to be altered by an external source such as a buff, or the changes I want to make have to involve altering the logic on the dino itself. On installing the mod all of your tamed dinos will automatically have their KBD buffs added to them. Existing wild ones however will not as in the past it has proved far too server intensive to try and buff many thousands of dinos at once, and therefore on installing the first thing you should do is a wild dino wipe, all wild dinos thereafter will spawn with their buffs straight away.

  • Same Named Remaps: My second preferred method that I will use if I just cannot make changes to a dino using buffs. This allows me to make many more changes to internal logic, status components etc. that wouldn't be able to be done otherwise. By 'Same Name Remap' what I mean is I will remap (ie. replace) a vanilla dino class with a modded dino class that has the same file name, so vanilla 'Dino_Character_BP' gets replaced by modded 'Dino_Character_BP' This has the effect of tricking the game into thinking the modded is the vanilla when it loads the game meaning that once more when installing the mod, all dinos that have been changed using this method will be automatically replaced by their modded version, and should the mod be removed they will simply revert back to being completely vanilla again. This is though effectively abusing and tricking the game and does have some disadvantages that we in the trade refer to as 'Class Confusion' Unlike some other mods that remap dinos in the same way, I have various different safeguards and workarounds in place to mitigate the problems caused by class confusion.

  • Unique Named Remaps: This is the most traditional method of making changes to dinos used by ark modders, where a vanilla dino is remapped by a modded dino with a different name. It does mean that when the mod is removed, those dinos that have been remapped in this way will be lost. I use this method to make changes in cases where either for various reasons the dino has to be a 'child' of the vanilla dino otherwise various mechanics will be broken. This means that the class name has to be different or the game will get very confused and break quite dramatically. I use this method in very few cases, and mainly for creatures that are untameable in vanilla and therefore could cause issues if they were to remain after the mod is removed anyway, or creatures that just don't really matter if they are lost, like fish. I also use unique named remaps for a couple of dinos that need to have changes made to their wild behaviour, but not their tamed, and which can't be changed via buff. This is currently just the Hesperornis and the Ichthyornis. Although the wilds will be unique named remaps, they will be automatically converted to be completely vanilla once you tame them.

  • Unique New Dinos: Lastly I also add various brand new dinos that are unique to the mod, these include the Better Liopleurodon as it is intended for it to spawn alongside the regular magical one (and was created very early in the mods life before I learnt how to do all the other stuff, so now it's kinda stuck this way), new Tek Dinos, the Styracosaurus and the Stygimoloch who were turned from just skins into fully functioning dinos to replace the roles left by the promotion of the Trike and Pachy by their new abilities, and lastly the KBD Speed Flyers, which will be covered later on in the guide.

As well as making lots of changes to dinos, KBD also adds many new items to the game, from new saddles, to new food types that will either help in healing up dinos, or to tame them, to various costumes that have various effects on dinos, the most notable of these being the Valyrian Reins, which boost flyers over vanilla without tipping them back into pre-nerf OP-ness, and being a costume that either has to be crafted or found out in the wild encourages players to go out and play the game to make their best flyers significantly better rather than just being handed to them.
KBD Special Features
As well as the various individual changes to dinos and new items, KBD also introduces some unique features to all dinos or players.

  • Mounted Shoulder Pet Inventory Access: With KBD all players will be able to access the inventory of any pets that are mounted on the shoulder of, or carried by the player. To do this you must double tap your Player Inventory access key. This is normally 'I' by default, but it will respect any rebinding that you may have done.

  • Ride Passenger Seats In Safety: With KBD players riding in a dinos passenger seat will be immune from damage from dinos, just like the dinos driver. Any dino attacks that can damage a dinos rider will still be able to damage passengers, and they will still be vulnerable to firearms etc. just like the rider. On top of that I have enabled the ability to use third person and orbit cam on the vast majority of dinos passenger seats, the only exceptions to this are the Space Whale and the Giant Turtle from Genesis.

  • Aberration Download Compatible and Cryopod Corruption Protection: All remapped and unique dinos added by this mod that are naturally spawned on Aberration will be automatically able to uploaded, downloaded and released from Cryopods or other Cryopod like devices (specifically Soul Balls from Dino Storage V2) without having to add anything else to any .Ini files or being forced to allow all other dinos just to allow the KBD modded ones, unlike well, pretty much every other dino mod where you are forced to use the Allow Foreign config to be able to do this. With full credit to Myrmecoleon for providing the code for this, you will also find this ability used by Myrms 'No Untamables' and all of my other mods where applicable. KBD also has complete Cryopod Corruption protection. Thanks to a recent feature added by Wildcard, KBD's remapped and unique dinos are now safe from being corrupted within Cryopods should the mod become corrupted by a bad update install or should it otherwise be removed. On re-adding the mod, or fixing the installation, Cryopods will show the dreaded Raptor Head icon of corruption, but will still be able to be quite happily released from their pocket prisons.

  • Level Equalisation and High Level .Ini Options: If you're tired of searching endlessly for hours on a story map for that perfect 150 tame amongst a sea of garbage level 5's, KBD offers the ability to either equalise the spread of wild dinos spawn levels so that all levels have a near equal chance of spawning, or to reverse the bias completely, making the very highest levels spawn much more frequently than those trashy low level meat sacks. These options will be covered in more detail later in the guide in the .Ini options section.

  • Speed Flyers: KBD offers the ability to convert most flyers into versions that are able to be levelled in speed. This ability is not enabled by default and must be enabled using the .Ini option AllowFlyerSpeed=True

    Once that is in effect you can manually convert your flyers by selecting the option to in their radial menu, under 'Options' you'll see 'Convert to Speed Flyer'

    Converting the flyer will see nothing change with them except you will now have the ability to level speed, with flyers gaining 2% speed per level. Should you wish to you can at any point convert those speed flyers back to regular ones with the same method, and any points that you have spent into speed will be refunded. As all speed flyers are unique classes to the mod you may wish to do this if the mod is ever removed to convert them back to regular flyers. This method obviously differs to other mods that may enable speed levelling, but also prevents any over-spawning, class confusion, or other issues that may be associated with them, and means that wild stats which have been balanced around not being able to level speed will be unaffected by wild dinos spawning with the ability and therefore wasting precious wild points into speed. All flyers can also gain a boost to their stamina and gain other enhanced abilities through the use of the Valyrian Reins item which will be detailed further along in this guide. Please note that this feature was brought in long before WC introduced their own 'Allow Flyer Speed' .Ini option. The vanilla option is recommended as this will affect all flyers, modded and vanilla automatically without any need for any extra steps such as the conversion, however the KBD version offers extra benefits such as the 2% speed increase per point whilst the vanilla offers 1%, as well as speed increase with imprint, and the ability to blacklist any flyers that you do not wish to be speed levelled.

  • Costume Slots: All creatures have been given a costume slot, this is mainly for use with the Orb Of Staying Power item that is available which is equipped in a dinos costume slot and immobilises them in a similar manner to the S+ hitching post. If a dino doesn't normally have a costume slot and KBD has added it it doesn't necessarily mean that all costumes will then play nicely with the dino. The costume slot is added via a buff placed on tamed dinos by the BD Buff manager.

  • Tek Dinos: With KBD installed all Tek Dinos will gain an additional 2% damage and resistance buff on top of their regular Tek bonuses of extra wild levels. All Tek Dinos will also poop 'Bio-Oil' rather than regular poop. Not only is this for a little extra flavour, but Bio-Oil is also a key ingredient in a couple of KBD specific recipes and the only source of it is either Tek Dino poop or Basilosaurus. KBD also makes the unused Tek Mosa and Tek Gigantosaurus spawn wild with a small chance of replacing their regular fleshy counterparts. I also introduce two brand new Tek Dinos, the Tek Ankylosaur and Tek Griffin. These are based on models made by the very talented Zythera, whose permission was very kindly granted to both use these models in KBD as well as making my own unique tweaks to the models. Both the Tek Anky and Griffin can spawn in place of their regular counterparts and have also been added to the Genesis Lunar Biome spawns. I realise that Tek Dinos aren't necessarily everyones cup of tea, and later in the guide will give instructions on how to properly remove Tek Dinos from your game if desired by using the available vanilla configs.

  • Wild Babies, Wild Eggs, Untameable Adults, and Passive Tamed Wild Babies: With KDB you have the options of making dinos spawn as babies in the wild, and wild egg layers drop nests with fertilized eggs, wild adult dinos to be untameable, and wild spawned babies be able to be passive tamed, or any combination of those that you would like. Along with extensive black or white listing features, and other fully configurable options all of which are extensively detailed in their own section of this guide.

  • Pet Dino Emote: This can now be found in your Emote Wheel. Using this emote will cause the player to reach out a loving hand, and the nearest dino to the player to play their cuddle animation if it has one. Not only is this both adorable and immersion helping, but also serves a practical purpose in that if the petted dino is one that has a KBD buff, that buff will re-run it's initial set up logic, handy as a trouble shooting tool if needed.
Installing/Uninstalling KBD and the Conversion System
KBD is designed to be an 'Easy on, easy off' mod. It does not have to be first in the load order, in fact you can most likely put it anywhere in the load order and it will be just fine, the caveat though is that is does remap dinos, if it is used alongside another mod that also remaps dinos then the rule of 'Highest in the load order wins!' and the mod that is first will get its remaps in ahead of the others. This can be mitigated in part by using the PreventBetterDino Ini. option which is handy if you want certain dinos from KBD to spawn, but certain dinos from the other mod to also spawn, for example;

You want to run both KBD and No Untameables at the same time, you prefer the No Untameables version of Ammonites and Jellyfish, but want to keep the other KBD creatures that are also remapped by NU, simply put KBD above NU in the load order, and use the PreventBetterAmmonite=True and PreventBetterJellyfish=True options for KBD and the remapping for the Ammonite and Jellyfish from KBD will be removed allowing the NU versions to spawn naturally (more on KBD and NU compatibility later on in the guide)

If you must use a Speed Flyer mod instead of using the built in Speed Flyer functionality KBD offers then it must be above KBD in the load order.

KBD can be happily added to an existing server and all its changes will immediately effect all tamed dinos that are out in the world. A quick wild dino wipe will ensure that all wild dinos will spawn with their buffs and changes from that point onwards. Existing wild dinos will not get buffed as it has proved to be far too server intensive to do so, hence the dino wipe recommendation (which is good practice when installing any mod that alters or adds dinos anyway)

Dinos that are stored in Cryopods or using Dino Storage or similar when the mod gets added that have their changes made by buffs will automatically have those buffs added when they get released. Dinos that have their changes made by being Same Name Remapped will still be vanilla when they get released, however you will see that they now have a big orange 'Vanilla' message in their HUD to tell you so. Vanilla dinos whose changes are made by being Same Name Remapped can be converted to their KBD version by going into 'Options' and selecting 'Convert to Better' and voila! That dino will then be its better version. The KBD conversion system is incredibly robust, when converting a dino all of its inventory items, saddles, buffs etc will be transferred from the old to the new, no stats will be lost, it is a seamless transition.

Should you wish to keep a dino as vanilla, that's absolutely fine, Same Name Remapped dinos can be converted back to their vanilla counterparts at any time, and will stay as vanilla if you wish them to, so if Fred likes the KBD version best, but Julie prefers it vanilla, no one has to choose, you can chop and change at will.

The only time a dino cannot be converted in this manner is if the dino is pregnant, as otherwise the baby would be lost, or if it is a dino equipped with a platform saddle. This is to ensure that precious builds do not get inadvertently destroyed. In both cases the conversion option in the radial menu will be disabled and will change to tell you why you cannot convert it.

The conversion system also comes into play if a server owner decides that they definitely do not want the changes made by KBD on a dino that has been remapped, and opt to use the PreventBetterDino .Ini option for that creature. Because of the way the game works with loading mods I cannot make my logic run early enough to actually stop the dino being remapped, so instead I will catch it as soon as the mod is loaded and all instances of that dino will be automatically converted back to vanilla, the conversion to better dino option will be removed, and the remap entry will be removed from the PGD so that only vanilla versions of that dino will be spawned in future and allowing KBD to in some way play nice with other remap mods as detailed above.

If at any point you wish to remove KBD, rest assured that for the most part all of your dinos will remain and merely be converted back to being totally vanilla once more. The exceptions will be any KBD Unique or Unique Named remaps. As they are classes that only exist in the mod they will be lost, as will all mod unique items. As previously noted, any KBD specific dino classes including Same Name Remaps and Uniques are protected against mod removal if they are in Cryopods, they will get corrupted and unusable, but re-adding the mod back on will allow them to be released. Note that this is also a native feature of Dino Storage and always has been. Should you not wish to be bothered with that palaver, make sure that you and your players release all dinos from Cryopods or Soul Balls before the mod is removed.
Wild Babies, Wild Eggs, and Untameable Adults
KBD now gives you the option of having almost all dinos spawn as babies, and/or lay eggs in the wild, as well as having adult dinos be untameable, and babies able to be passive tamed.

All these options are independent of each other, and must be enabled via the .Ini configs as detailed here, as well as Blacklist and Whitelist options and baby or egg laying chance percentage options. All options as with every .Ini option from this mod should go in your GameUserSettings.Ini under the [BetterDinos] header:

WildBabies= Set to True to give all dinos that spawn a chance of spawning as a baby, provided that they are not exempt by default or by being user blacklisted. Babies in the wild will always try and follow the nearest adult if one is available. Getting too close to a wild baby is likely to alert any nearby adults of the same species to danger and cause them to respond. In instances where a dino spawns as a baby and there are no other members of the same species nearby it, an adult dino of the same level will be spawned nearby to protect it.

PreventAngryAdults= Set to true if you'd just prefer to see babies tottering around your world and don't wish to have the adults getting miffed just for getting close to one.

WildChanceOfBaby= Number between 0.01 and 1. Defaults to 0.05 (ie. 5%) increase or decrease if you would like more or less chance of wild dinos spawning as babies. Only Applicable if WildBabies= is also set to true

PassiveTameBabyFoodMulti= Defaults to 5, this effects the food drain of wild babies explicitly made passive tameable via the Passive Tame babies config. It will not effect the wild babies of those species who are already passive tameable by default.

WildEggs= Set to true to give all wild dinos that are capable of laying eggs a chance to lay eggs in the wild. These eggs will be in nests. There will only be able to be 1 nest of any species within a certain radius. This will only apply to those dinos that don't already lay wild eggs such as Wyverns, Rock Drakes, Magmasaurs or Deinons. Wild eggs laid in this manner will not incubate or lose health unlike some other mods that introduce wild eggs. Creatures who have been force disabled from being tamed will not lay eggs (ie. high level cave spawns) Eggs laid in this manner will properly delete themselves if their spoil timer runs out unlike vanilla wild eggs. Admins can clear all wild eggs spawned using this option by using the command cheat DestroyAll DroppedItemGeneric_FertilizedEgg_NoPhysics_BD_C 0

WildChanceOfEgg= Number between 1 and 100. Defaults to 5 (ie. 5%) increase or decrease if you would like more or less chance of wild dinos laying an egg on unstasis. Only applicable if WildEggs= is set to true.

UntameableAdults= Mainly to be used in conjunction with one or both or the above configs. This will render all adult dinos untameable, unless they are incapable of being babies or otherwise have the same exemptions as the WildBabies config in which case they will be tamable through the normal methods.

PassiveTameBabies= Allows all wild spawned babies to be passive tamed regardless of their regular taming methods. It will also prevent them from being KO tamed. Be warned though, nearby adults will take exception at you feeding their little bundle of joy. Obviously this may render some dinos untamable as babies as they have specific taming methods that are not compatible with straightforward passive taming such as Tusos or Bloodstalkers. You may wish to blacklist them, or if also using UntameableAdults=True you may wish to blacklist the adults to leave adults tameable using the traditional methods, or you may wish to have these dinos only tamed by finding wild eggs. I leave this up to the user to configure how they desire.

These options will apply to all dinos (vanilla and modded) that naturally spawn in the world provided they are not exempt by default or have been manually blacklisted, they will not effect dinos spawned by other means such as Simple Spawners.

Default exemptions and conditions that must be met for all of these options are:

  • Must be able to have a baby.
  • Must be able to be tamed.
  • Must not be Robots, Bosses, Basket Tames, Corrupted, or Reapers.
  • Must not be Force Disabled from being tamed (ie. Spawned by a high level cave spawner or similar)

Users can define their own blacklists of exemptions by using the following options:

WildBabyBlacklist=
WildEggsBlacklist=
PassiveTameBabyBlacklist=
UntameableAdultBlacklist=

In all cases you will need to list the dinos you wish to have excluded using their Dino Name Tag, with each one being separated by a comma. All vanilla dino name tags are listed on the Wiki here:

Ark Wiki: Creature ID's[ark.gamepedia.com]

If you wish to exclude specific modded dinos that do not use vanilla Dino Name Tags you will need to ask the authors to provide them for you.

An example may be:

WildEggsBlacklist=Gigant,Quetz,Therizinosaurus,Tusoteuthis
UntameableAdultBlacklist=Gigant,Gremlin,Bloodstalker,Space Whale,Tusoteuthis
WildBabyBlacklist=Trike,Argent,Wyvern

Alternatively, if you have only a few dinos that you wish to be affected by any of the options, you may prefer to Whitelist those dinos, both making it easier for you, and more performant for the buff to process.

WildBabyWhitelist=
UntameableAdultWhitelist=
PassiveTameBabyWhitelist=
WildEggsWhitelist=

Again use the Dino Name Tag of the dinos that you wish to use. You cannot have a Blacklist and a Whitelist of the same type, as Blacklists will always override Whitelists (if a Blacklist is used then the Whitelist won't even get looked at by the logic)

You also have the ability to set a minimum level for passive taming of any wild babies;

PassiveTameBabyMinLevel=

Like the Black and White lists, uses the Dino Name Tag, but this time you also need to add the minimum level you would like the babies to be tamed at, separating the dino name and the level with a colon, (:) and still separating each entry with a comma.

So for example to set baby Rex's to be passive tamed at a minimum level of 50, Therizinos at a minimum of 60 and Dodos at a minimum of 105, your .Ini entry would need to be;

PassiveTameBabyMinLevel=Rex:50,Therizinosaurus:60,Dodo:105

This will only apply to the passive taming of babies and will not effect any other taming of adults or otherwise

Obviously using all of the main options, WildBabies, UntameableAdults, WildEggs, and PassiveTameBabies together will dramatically alter your Ark experience, making egg grabbing and baby pinching the only way of obtaining tamed dinos in the majority of cases, although as some dinos which can't have babies will still be obtainable through conventional means, they may end up being of much more use to you than previously thought...

All of the logic that enables this is done simply through a couple of buffs and an event dispatcher.

It should be noted again that not every option will play nicely with every dino, passive tamed babies for example will not work for all dinos as they may have specific conditions that need to be met for them to be tamed, such as Bloodstalkers or Tusos. I leave it up to the users to configure how they want these dinos to be handled through use of the blacklists, whether you wish for them to be blacklisted from being babies, or to keep the adults tameable, or to only have them able to be acquired through wild eggs etc. It's entirely up to you how you want to play it.
Wild Random Sizes
KBD adds wild random sizes to some select dinos that don't normally use them, for example Hyaenodons, Dilos, Titanoboas, Euryps and Jellyfish. In addition to this I remap all of the dinos that naturally have random sizes in the vanilla game, ie. Coels, Salmon and Trilobites. These dinos that have been added or altered by the mod that have random sizes now have the following improvements:

  • Previously the max health of dinos using random sizes would be scaled with size, up or down. Unfortunately application of this mechanic is inconsistent, being applied on restarts for example after current health has been set causing an apparent loss of health of dinos over 1.0 size. Also not being applied at all after release from Cryopods, causing a loss of both max and current health.
  • Now Dinos under size 1.0 will still have their max health reduced according to size. But dinos OVER 1.0 size will no longer receive increased health.* Instead they will receive a damage resistance in line with their size. For example a dino of 2.0 size will only receive 50% damage.
  • Dinos with random sizes will now have their damage output adjusted according to their size. a dino of 0.5 size will deal half damage, a dino of 2.0 size will deal double damage.
  • Randomly sized dinos now have their global animation speeds adjusted to compensate for their size and the speed adjustments that come with it.
  • Dinos over 1.0 size will have their attack ranges and melee swings scaled accordingly.
  • Passive production dinos such as Trilos and Euryps that have random sizes will now have their item production effected by their size where noted. This will not effect production of creatures stored in Soul Balls, a default amount will be used.
  • Note that these changes are only in effect on KBD dinos that have random sizes, vanilla and other modded dinos that use them will be unaffected.
  • The exception to the extra damage and resistance mechanics is Hyaenadons as they already receive more than enough damage and resistance buffs through their gang, pack, and petted buffs, and Dilos who only receive extra damage for the larger sized Dilos and large Dilos receiving a straight stats boost instead.

*Please note that when releasing a dino over 1.0 size from a Dino Storage 2 Soul Ball, you may see the health increased and then decreased again as Lethals logic makes an adjustment to max health, and then my logic sets it back to normal. Similarly, when breeding any of these creatures, you may see max health constantly fluctuating whilst the baby matures as the numbers are constantly being set and reset. This will settle down once the baby is fully matured.
Built In Mod Compatibilities
KBD is fully compatible with some of my other mods and has some relationships with mods by other authors.

  • Additional Aberrant Dinos: KBD is fully compatible with my own Additional Aberrant Dinos mod, and contains several KBD versions for whom the 'Vanilla' version would be introduced by AAD. They will only spawn naturally, have the correct Aberrant textures, and lay the correct eggs if AAD is also installed. For best mod compatibility KBD should be above AAD in the load order, this will ensure that the KBD versions correctly remap the versions introduced by AAD. In the case of buffed dinos any applicable buffs will automatically be placed on AAD dinos. Basically KBD will treat AAD dinos as if they were vanilla, and remaps will be Unique Name Remaps due to an odd issue that came about recently when they were same named remaps.

  • Animals of Atlas: Although not affected at all by KBD, there are a couple of creatures in AoA that produce Cattle Milk and Raw Pork. These items and their derivatives are functionally identical to the Mammal Milk and High Protein Meat items introduced by KBD, however the KBD versions have slightly more uses than the AoA items. Therefore I have given the ability to place the AoA items into the preserving bin section of the BD Workbench, and they will automatically be converted into their BD version.

  • No Untameables: Made by the always awesome Myrmecoleon, who has also helped immensely with the development of KBD. The two mods complement each other exceedingly well with both having similar ethos in their aims, because of this relationship KBD will not touch any creatures that are going to be worked on for no No Untameables as Myrm is doing such a bang up job on them. However there is a few creatures that overlap as they were developed before Myrm came on board with KBD, the Ammonites, the Eurypterids, the Jellyfish, and the Meganeuras. Ammonites in KBD are not tameable but obviously are in NU. Euryps, Jellyfish and Dragonflies are tamable in both mods using different methods and have different abilities, you may prefer one over the other, you may like both, therefore if playing with both mods installed whichever is loaded first will have the remap priority for which version spawns. Using the prevention .Ini config from either mod for any of the overlapping creatures will allow the other mods version to spawn. Tamed Euryps, Jellyfish and Dragonflies can be converted between the NU and KBD versions at will if you really can't decide which you want, or want a mixture of both. On top of this the NU Deathworm also respects the new death drop inventories introduced by KBD.

  • QOL Items: Also by Myrmecoleon, Myrm has been using this mod to experiment with communications between mods using new features that were added in the Dev Kit, amongst lots of swanky useful items are some converters that can change dinos into their Aberrant, Tek or X versions where available. These converters are fully supported by all of my main mods, KBD, AAD, and AoA.

  • Dino Storage V2: By Lethal, DSV2 is the premiere way of storing dinos and honestly in my opinion every unofficial server should have it installed, not only is the mod great, but Lethal is awesome and provides all sorts of automation features via the Soul Terminal that fully supports all of KBD's passive item generation dinos.

  • Shiny!: By Nevcairiel and Strangechilde, Shiny! dinos doesn't have any direct interactions with KBD, however it is a mod that was developed largely in response to other similar mods not playing at all nicely with not only KBD, but any modded dinos. Shiny! not only plays brilliantly with all modded and vanilla dinos, but does so in style. Using an entirely buff based system to give dinos high levels and well thought out colour sets to seek out, as well as some extra specially rare dinos with special abilities to look out for. With lots of customisation abilities, Shiny! has become a firm favourite of mine and I'm happy to promote it to anyone who will listen!

  • Paleo ARK: Legends Expansion: By UpFromTheDepths, I have a long history of collaboration with Depths. We've known each other since before Ark even existed, and I have helped out with making the Paleo Ark YouTube series, so of course I'm also going to fully support his first full venture into modding! The mod itself adds several uniquely skinned Paleo Variants, and in the future will add some unique species as well as open world bosses based on characters from the Paleo Ark series itself. Running KBD alongside this mod and using the BuffsIncludeSource= .Ini option will ensure that KBD buffs get added to the Paleo variants where applicable, but also those dinos that KBD remaps will also have their own unique versions that use the Paleo Ark skins, whilst retaining all their usual KBD changes for complete compatibility between the two. These KBD Paleo Variants will respect all .Inis used by the Paleo Ark mod for spawn chance and and level multipliers.

BufgfsIncludeSource .Ini Option:

Now included is a .Ini option to allow users to have KBD buffs applied to dinos from other mods, provided they meet certain criteria.

BuffsIncludeSource= (Path String array, must be separated by a comma (,))

Using this option will allow KBD buffs to be added to sources other than vanilla, however to receive KBD buffs the required dinos MUST be child classes of the vanilla. How this is used is entirely up to the users discretion, and users should be aware that adding KBD buffs to other modded dinos may have inadvertent effects and should therefore be used with caution. This option only applies to dinos who are marked as This Creature Is Buffed in their relevant section, changes from creatures who are remaps or unique creatures will not be affected.

The String Array accepts partial matches of the dinos path code, and can be used to be very vague and add KBD buffs to all compatible dinos from a certain mod, or you can be very precise and only add to specific creatures.

Some examples:

To add KBD Buffs to the entirety of creatures from the Paleo Ark mod and the No Untameables mod, you could use:

BuffsIncludeSource=PaleoARKLegends,NoUntameables

This simply uses the mods main folder names. To add buffs though to just the Paleo Ark Stego, and Paleo Ark Rex, you would have to be more precise and use something like:

BuffsIncludeSource=PaleoARKLegends/PaleoVariants/PaleoStego,PaleoARKLegends/PaleoVariants/PaleoRex

Which will filter out to just the folders that contain the Paleo Stego and Paleo Rex.

This is intended to be a niche method of support, and therefore I leave it to the user to figure it out for themselves. I will not be fretting over attempts to make things work that don't work (as a preemptive statement, I will state that dinos from the Crystal Isles addition mod are not child classes of vanilla, and therefore this will not work to add BD buffs to them, so don't even bother trying)
Spawning Dinos with KBD
As a server admin, you will of course on occasion be required to spawn in dinos for your players. With KBD installed there are just a couple of things to bear in mind when doing so as the best method you use may be dependent on how KBD makes its changes. Each dino that has been changed by KBD will be listed in its own section in this guide, it will clearly mention whether the dino is Buffed, Same Name Remapped, Unique Dino, or Unique Named Remap.

  • Buffed Dinos: This dino is vanilla and has all of its changes made by the addition of a default buff. You should go ahead and use the vanilla spawn code of your choice, summon, GMSummon etc, it doesn't matter at all as the dino will have its buff applied automatically.

  • Unique New Dinos or Unique Named Remaps: Both of these types of dinos are unique to KBD and if spawning them in you should use the class name as listed in the dinos description using the spawn code of your choice. Note that with Unique Named Remaps you cannot convert from vanilla to better in the same way as you can with same named remaps, the reason for this is largely because those dinos that are unique named remaps are either untameable in vanilla, or are unable to be buffed and so cannot be given the vanilla to better conversion buff like the others. In the case of the Hesperornis and Ichthyornis the given spawn codes should only really be used to spawn in wild versions, as they automatically convert into vanilla when tamed.

  • Same Name Remaps: These are the tricksy ones, as the the game will prioritise spawning the vanilla dino when using just the Dino_Character_BP_C class with a Summon or GMSummon command. Unlike other mods that use same named remaps who will tell you that you just have to spawn the vanilla version and it'll get changed on the next server restart, I have firstly mitigated for the fact that it happens, and secondly will tell you how to spawn things properly to start with.

    To spawn a wild dino: As noted using just the Summon command will spawn the vanilla dino, so therefore to spawn a wild KBD you must use the long SpawnDino command that gives the full path of the dino and tells the game exactly what you want to spawn with no confusion. The exact code required will be listed in the dinos section and all the codes given will be to spawn a level 150 dino so just adjust that figure to suit.

    To spawn a tamed dino: Is easier as you have a couple of options as I have added the conversion functionality to the vanilla dino that I remap. You can use the normal GMSummon command, this will, as noted, spawn you the vanilla dino, but you will then be able to manually convert it to it's better dinos version. If however you want to cut to the chase, it is possible to chain admin commands by separating them with a | which is not a widely known thing, even amongst experienced server owners, so you could if desired spawn the dino as wild using the long code, and then add |cheat DoTame onto the end of it, which will spawn the dino and immediately tame it for you.

If you wish to use Simple Spawners to spawn any of the KBD unique dinos, they will need to be added to the spawners using the long path as they are modded dinos. Simple Spawners provides you with all the instructions on how to do this. To find the path you just need to take the long path spawn code that I will provide you with and remove the bits you don't need, so for example, the Tek Griffin, I will provide you with the long spawn path

cheat spawndino "Blueprint'/Game/Mods/BetterDinosTest/Griffin/BDBionicGriffin_Character_BP.BDBionicGriffin_Character_BP'" 500 0 0 150

Simple Spawners will require just the parts between the quotation marks, ie.

Blueprint'/Game/Mods/BetterDinosTest/Griffin/BDBionicGriffin_Character_BP.BDBionicGriffin_Character_BP'

And this will be true as well if you wish Simple Spawners to spawn same named remaps, make sure you use the KBD path and not the vanilla otherwise it's the vanilla that will be spawned by the Simple Spawners, they won't be remapped as they are not spawned by the vanilla Ark spawners.
Dino Descriptions and .Ini Information
Now then, without any further ado, let's crack on and tell you what dinos are affected by KBD and what changes are made.

Each dinos section will list whether it is Buffed, Unique, Same Name Remap or Unique Name Remap, a summary of all the changes KBD makes to it along with any pertinent info that you may need to use any of its new abilities if it has them, spawn codes if applicable, and a list of any .Ini options that are specific to that dino.

All .Ini options will be listed as their default value, and you only ever need to add an option to your .Ini if want to change it from the default.

All .Ini options are to be used in the GameUserSettings.Ini using the header [BetterDinos]
As this is apparently sometimes a source of confusion to first time or inexperienced server admins, it should be noted that the [BetterDinos] header will not magically appear by itself, you must add it in.

Unless specifically noted, all KBD changes are made to all regular variants of any given dino, such as Aberrant, Tek, X and R.

Corrupted (except for Drakes and Wyverns) and Genesis mission dinos are not touched as they are not tamable and so doing so would be pointless.

KBD affected dinos can be easily identified by riding them, you will see a blue 'BD' buff icon in the top left corner of your screen. This is to mainly to assist in trouble shooting, if it doesn't have the 'BD' icon, then it is either not a BD remapped or unique creature, or it does not have the KBD buff.
Achatina
This creature is Buffed

  • Tamed snails can now eat berries and veggies. Only tamed ones, wild will still need to be fed Sweet Veggie Cakes to be tamed.

PreventBetterSnail=False
Setting to True will prevent the KBD Buff from being added
Ammonite
This creature is a Unique Named Remap

  • Ammonites will now spawn with randomised sizes.
  • Now bleed blue blood.

PreventBetterAmmonite=False

Aberrant Ammonite:

This creature is a Unique Named Remap

  • Has all the same attributes as the normal KBD Ammonite.
  • Will only spawn naturally on Aberration if Additional Aberrant Dinos is installed and KBD is above it in the load order as it remaps the Aberrant Ammonite introduced by that mod, or with a 10% chance of replacing KBD Ammonites on any map if using the RandomAberrants=True or RandomAberrantsBDOnly=True .Ini options
  • Massively reduced aggro range to take into account the more close quarters environment of Aberration.

Anglerfish
This creature is Buffed

  • Drag Weight has been reduced. This is done purely to allow the Angler to be carried by the Better Liopleurodon without also having it able to carry things like Dunkles.
  • Tamed Anglers can be harvested for 25 Angler Gel every thirty minutes via the radial menu. It should be noted that as the Anglerfish changes are achieved via a buff, cryopodding or soul balling will reset the harvesting timer on release.

PreventAnglerGelHarvest=False
Setting to True will prevent the ability to harvest Angler Gel from tamed Anglers
AnglerGelInterval=1800
Amount of seconds between Angler Gel harvesting of tamed Anglers, the default of 1800 equals 30 minutes

PreventWaterAlphaCarrying=False
Setting to True will prevent Alpha Mosas and Megalodons from being able to be grabbed by Tusos. This is for servers who wish these creatures to provide more of a PvE challange and to not be cheesed, or who do not wish Alpha carrying to be used for griefing or otherwise

  • Will not gather berries when using its tail attack whilst being carried by another dino. I'm not sure if that's still actually an issue in vanilla, but my Ankys don't do it.
  • KBD Abilities are able to be toggled on and off using the radial menu under Options.

PreventBetterAnky=False
Setting to True will prevent the KBD Buff from being added
PreventAnkyWanderHarvest=False
Setting to True will prevent the Anky from being able to wander harvest

  • Tek Anky has all the same features as both vanilla and KBD Tek Dinos, as well as all the KBD Anky abilities. Any .Ini configs used for either Tek Dinos or the Anky will also naturally effect the Tek Anky.
  • Tek Anky model a unique creation by Zythera, whose permission was kindly granted to use the model in this mod and to make my own tweaks to it.
  • Tek Anky will not spawn if you have any mod that remaps regular Ankys.
  • Has the KBD Tek Dinos buff meaning that it has a 2% damage and resistance increase, and will poop 'Bio-Oil' instead of regular poop. This can be toggled on and off in the radial menu.

PreventBetterTekDinos=False

This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Now able to climb on walls the same as the Megalania. Climbing ability toggled with X key. Does not use stamina for wall crawling.
  • C key fires a bola web attack. This can be used to immobilise creatures up to a mass of 220 (See below for full list of eligible dinos) for 30 seconds. This attack is only used by tamed spiders and has a 10 second cool down between uses. When used with a rider a cool down timer will appear in the top right corner.

Astrocetus
This creature is Buffed

  • Wild Space Whales will always be visible, even if added to other maps via .Ini or other methods such as Simple spawners.
  • Now will not lose such ludicrous amounts of taming effectiveness per bite of food when taming (reduced the relevant variable from the default 2000 to 2.5 in line with most other creatures. most likely overlooked by WC with the presumption that it wasn't originally intended to be a ko and feed tame)

  • Increased swimming speed from 300 to 2,500.
  • Increased teleportation range by 50%

AllowBasiliskIK=False
Setting to True will allow the basilisk to use the experimental IK changes (which gives it the ability to rotate with terrain on slopes etc.) Enabled by default they were proving to be be problematic for a lot of users and causing unwanted effects and were disabled. Use these changes at your own risk
PreventDesertBasilisk=False
Setting to True will remove the mods added spawning of Basilisks in the Dunes spawner
Basilosaurus
This creature is Buffed

  • Now produces Bio-Oil rather than a copy of Squid Ink. This oil can still be refined into Gasoline, and is a base ingredient of the Shark Repellent and Cthulhus Blood items.

PreventBetterBasilo=False
Setting to True will prevent the switch from regular oil to the special Bio-Oil, note that this will prevent the crafting of some of the recipes if Tek Dinos are also disabled as Tek Dino poop and Basilos are the only sources of the Bio-Oil and this is a key ingredient, it will not remove the buff entirely as it is still required to make sure that the Better Manta will follow the Basilo
Beezlebufo

Brontosaurus
This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Right Click does one footed stomp attack, good for getting pesky small critters underneath your body. Does 70 base damage. Which foot will stomp is dependent on the direction your camera is facing. All four feet can be used.
  • C key now does a big two footed rear up and stomp. This is a high quality attack, that can destroy stone and metal nodes (uses the same damage type that I have given to the Better Rock Golem for its spin attack) and can also damage stone structures. Can therefore gather pretty much anything that can be gathered with a pick with this attack, but it is slow and stamina intensive. Does 110 base damage. This attack will deal full damage to Rock Elementals.
  • Big increases to all base stats (except oxygen).
  • Brontos are now immune to all forms of knockback.

PreventBetterBronto=False

Cnidaria (Jellyfish)
This creature is a Unique Named Remap

  • Now wander naturally instead of sitting still waiting to aggro onto a player or tame.
  • Massively reduced aggro range meaning that you practically have to touch them or attack them before being shocked.
  • Now come in random sizes.
  • Now properly use their unused colour set and appear in a variety of pretty colours.

  • Will now be properly tamed when being captured in a fish basket meaning that they can gain experience and be levelled and will be able to eat from tribe troughs. Note that after the first capture and release, you will then need to capture and release them a second time using another fish basket, Cryopod, Soul Ball or similar to get them properly tamed and able to gain XP etc.
  • Putting Coels on tamed wandering will produce various resources in their inventories as long as their inventory is at less than 90% of its full weight. Generation speed is effected by the size of Coel, larger Coels will generate resources faster than smaller ones.
  • Resources able to obtained include: Sap, Cementing Paste, Silica Pearls, Organic Polymer, Charcoal, Scrap Metal, Stone Arrows, Tranq Arrows, Metal Arrows, Tranq Darts, all types of berry, Biotoxin, Leech Blood, Ammonite Bile, Squid Oil, Angler Gel, Sulfur, Sand, Crystal, Obsidian, Clay, Ambergris, Plant Species X, Y, and Z Seeds, and Absorbant Substrate. Any of these items can be excluded via .Ini

Only use the names that you wish to prevent the Coels from producing, making sure to separate each entry with a comma as demonstrated above.

As there are many options here I have found that trying to do too many will result in it not working properly. You can condense some of these options down, for example 'Berry' would prevent all the berries, 'Blood' would prevent both Leech and Ammonite, 'Arrow' would prevent all three arrows, 'Seed' all three seeds etc. It compares the word between the commas with the class name of all of the possible loot items so you may be able to use variations of the above to easier block the items you do not wish to be collected.

  • When being carried on your shoulder, pressing your Drag Button (G by default) will summon a pack of between 6 and 11 Compy Friends to come to your aid.
  • Compy Friends cannot be interacted with apart from to whistle orders (no inventory or radial menu) and on spawn will be on Neutral and set to follow your Compy.
  • Summoned Compy Friends have a lifespan of 2 minutes before despawning and will be despawned on Stasis, they will have a random level between 50 and 100 levels less than your Compy.
  • Compy Friends cannot be Cryopodded or otherwise stored.

Corrupted Rock Drakes and Wyverns
These creatures are Unique Named Remaps

  • Now able to create wild nests and eggs. These can occur anywhere these creatures are found, they have no set spawning area.
  • Although the laid eggs will say that they were laid by a Corrupted Wyvern or a Drake, they will hatch into completely normal Wyverns and Drakes. These are completely vanilla eggs that are being laid.
  • Corrupted Wyverns can lay any of the four types of Wyvern eggs by default at random (Ice, Fire, Poison and Lightning). You can add an .Ini config that will allow them to also lay any of the three types of Crystal Wyvern eggs as well, and if you also have AAD installed then you can add a separate config to allow them to have a chance of laying a Night Wyvern egg.
  • Note that neither of the egg laying versions of these creatures will be spawned by OSD's, so don't expect to find silly high level eggs being dropped.
  • Both Corrupted Drakes and Wyverns will drop Toughened Hide instead of regular Hide. This can be used to craft Valyrian Reins.
  • Both Drakes and Wyverns have a chance to drop a set of Valyrian Reins when killed just like their regular KBD buffed counterparts.

  • Increased base health by 75% as intended but not implemented by the devs.
  • Has double the stamina of vanilla Deinons.
  • Unable to be carried whilst latching, and unable to latch whilst being carried.
  • Deinons now spawn with the same level banding as other egg tames such as Wyverns and Rock Drakes (ie. up to 190 on regular 5x difficulty)
  • Can be made to spawn in the wild on maps other than Valguero, and will lay eggs wherever it is made to spawn instead of just on set egg laying points (on Valguero will still use the set egg points)
  • Even if Better Deinon is prevented, vanilla Deinons will still spawn at levels up to 190 (unless prevented) and receive the correct colorisation.

Adding the KBD Deinonychus to maps other than Valguero:

Soooo, there used to be a big long spiel here about how awkward it was to do the Deinon and how problems with Alpha Raptors and spawn containers and such made it difficult to add the Deinon to other maps. However because WC borked the climbing on vanilla and KBD Deinons, it sort of forced my hand to actually delve in and fix all that stuff and do a lot of graph work so that they would have an independent parent class that is separate from vanilla Raptors. This means that a lot of the jumping through hoops that was required has been removed, the KBD Deinon is now simply a Same Named Remap like most of the other remapped dinos in the mod, making things a lot simpler and more convenient for all involved. You now just need to use the class name Deinonychus_Character_BP_C and the remapping will take care of the rest, no need for any intermediate classes or any of that nonsense, and they will happily lay eggs for you to collect anywhere they spawn.

There is plenty of information regarding adding dinos to spawn containers using the Game.Ini if you Google for it, you can however take the following example and tweak the spawn container used and the weightings to suit;

ConfigAddNPCSpawnEntriesContainer=(NPCSpawnEntriesContainerClassString="SE_DinoSpawnEntriesBadlands_C",NPCSpawnEntries=((AnEntryName="Deinon",EntryWeight=1.0,NPCsToSpawnStrings=("Deinonychus_Character_BP_C"))),NPCSpawnLimits=((NPCClassString="Deinonychus_Character_BP_C",MaxPercentageOfDesiredNumToAllow=1.0)))

This example will add a single Deinon to the Scorched Earth Badlands spawners. With credit to Tsunderecracker for providing the example.
Dilophosaurus
This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Now come in Small and Large varieties.
  • Now exhibit sexual dimorphism with only male Dilos having a frill
  • Small dilos are fairly unchanged from vanilla. Changed Extra Tamed Speed Multiplier from 0.55 to 0.75
  • Large Dilos come in random size between 1.5 and 2.0, rideable and can be equipped with a saddle.
  • Large Dilos have triple the stats across the board of small Dilos, except for damage. Damage instead scales with the size of the Dilo.
  • Big Dilos will provide a buff to nearby allied small Dilos giving a 20% damage increase and 20% damage resistance.
  • Small Dilos will only inflict their spit de-buff (blind and slow) on players and dinos under 150 drag weight, big Dilos will inflict it upon all targets unless otherwise immune.
  • Improved range and damage of Dilo spit, now scales with melee and does base damage of 12. Large Dilos have a further increased range of spit.
  • Pressing Alt Fire (Left Ctrl) while riding a large Dilo will move the Dilo into an aggressive stance which will last until it is pressed again or another animation interrupts it (eg. bite, eat, swim, jump or poop) This is purely cosmetic.
  • Large Dilos can now utilise different materials in their inventory as ammo for a special spit attack that can be activated by pressing the C button. Different ammo types can be selected via the radial menu, or whilst riding pressing Prone (X) will cycle through the different ammo types. Each use of the special spit attack will consume 10 of the selected ammo from the Dilos inventory, and cannot be used unless the ammo item is present. All of the effects last for 15 seconds.

    Ammonite Bile - Victim enrages all nearby wild dinos. Uses a new rage buff which allows victims to be damaged by their own team and class.

    Squid Oil/Bio Oil - Victim is massively slowed and blinded, unable to run, jump, or fly (although dinos that are already flying will not be grounded)

    Diseased Bile (gathered from tamed BD Diseased Leeches) - Only affects players and tamed dodos, inflicts Swamp Fever on the target.

    Bio Toxin - Increases Torpor by 5 per second

    Angler Gel - sets the victim on fire causing 5% DOT, Does not effect Boss Dinos

PreventBetterDilo=False
Setting to True will prevent the Better Dilophosaurus from spawning and revert all existing ones back to vanilla
PreventBigDilos=False
Setting to True will prevent big Dilos from spawning
BigDiloChance=0.2
The higher this number the higher the chance of Dilos spawning as big Dilos. As this is a Weighting config, you should bear in mind that the weighting of small Dilos spawn will always be 1, therefore setting this config to 1 would give both small and large dilos an equal chance of spawning, higher than 1 will tip the weighting towards Big Dilos

  • Improved turning radius.
  • Insulation range is now equal to Dimetrodons Health.
  • 'Overheat' ability: Activating Overheat will boost the Dimetrodons Hypothermic Insulation x5, and reduce its Hyperthermic Insulation to 0.2, decreases its effective range by half
  • Overheating will steadily reduce the Dimetrodons Health until it reaches 50% then the ability will stop, cannot be used if the Dimetro is under 50% health, will also put a drain on the Dimetrodons food levels.
  • Overheating will provide the 'Superheated' boost to the following reptilian, synapsid and amphibious creatures within its insulation range giving them a speed, damage resistance, melee damage and stamina usage boost: Sarcos, Kapros, Titanoboas, Carbonymys, Megalania (Reptiles) Beezlebufos, Diplocaulus, (Amphibians) Dimetrodons, Moschops, and Lystros (Synapsids)
  • The Superheated buff gives the affected creature 25% extra speed and damage and 15% damage reduction, if moving out of range of the Dimetrodon the buff will last for 15 seconds and will then become a less potent 'Heated' version that gives 10% extra speed and damage and 5% damage reduction lasting for a further 15 seconds.

  • Wild Diplos will do a tail whip or stomp attack against attackers when reaching less than 50% health. They will then attempt to run away.
  • Tailswipe causes a 10 second stun, a small amount of damage and torpor. Creatures stunned by this attack have a 60 second immunity to being stunned again after it wears off.
  • The tail whip cannot harm human characters (to fit in with the dossier, and to prevent OP-ness)
  • Diplos will also not use the tail whip or stomp against unmounted players.
  • Tamed Diplo when ridden has new attacks:

    Left Click: Tail Whip as detailed above.
    Right Click: One Footed Stomp, 40 base damage, harvests berries and thatch.
    C: Regular Diplo 'Nuzzle' attack, no damage, no longer harvests.
    X (Prone): Happy Stompy Attack, like the Stomp Attack but multiple times (uses the cuddle animation)

  • Tamed unridden Diplos will still only perform the Nuzzle attack (they love you and trust you to protect them)
  • Diplos can also be put into Turret mode. Whilst in Turret Mode they will be unable to be pushed. Useful for pushing back attackers and keeping them at bay.

Ferox
This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Many fixes from vanilla.
  • All levels correctly transfer between biggy and smalls.
  • Level ups made when biggy now correctly transfer to smalls.
  • Gets correct tamed levels on tame on both client and server
  • All buffs now transfer from smalls to biggy and vice versa (Shiny Ferox's! Yay!)
  • Serialised many timers to prevent some weirdness when cryopodding or over server restarts
  • Various animation fixes such as missing sounds, melee swing notifies, addiction speed notifies, prevention of movement etc. Now attacks at the same speed when addicted in single player as it does on server.
  • Addiction amount required to mate now configurable by .Ini. Still defaults to 95%
  • Added cosmetic Roar to Left Ctrl (Alt Fire) key.
  • Added new attack to X (Dino Air Brake) that uses a cool unused punchy animation. This hits four times with a slightly higher damage than the regular swipes. This attack is sped up by addiction.
  • Doubled the mass of Large Ferox, and in addition a Large Ferox at over 75% addiction will be unable to be knocked back whilst it is using its swipe attacks.

Element Stashing:

Small Ferox's can now be used to stash Element away.
  • They can hold up to 500 element, where they put it only they know! To stash Element put it onto your Hot-bar, then go into Options in the radial menu and select 'Stash Element' The Element will then be removed from you and squirrelled away.
  • Ferox's that have a stash of Element will not follow you around and beg if you have Element on your hot-bar, however there is a small chance that every now and again they will sneak a piece of Element out of their stash, decreasing it by one. The higher their Addiction level the greater the chance they have of doing this.
  • Small Ferox's that have a stash and are transformed to a Large Ferox will receive extra health. Two points of extra health for each piece of Element stashed (Note that this extra health will not persevere over server restarts if your Ferox is left in its large state).
  • If your Ferox is killed in either form then its stash will be deposited into its inventory. Make sure you get it before your enemies do!
  • Stashing Element onto a Ferox can be used to trick the Cross Ark Transfer system, and allow you to transfer Element across Arks!
  • Element can be retrieved from your Ferox's stash at any time, however be careful as they don't like to give it up easily! Removing a stash will trigger a transformation into large, and the Ferox will steal a small amount (between one and five pieces. This will contribute towards total addiction amount.) of your Element. The Large Ferox then has a chance of raging and attacking everything around it for about 20 seconds before calming down, so make sure you take it somewhere out of the way to take its stash off of it! The chance of a rage increases with the Ferox's Addiction level, with 100% addiction guaranteeing that they will rage out.

  • Has 'Gardening Mode' and when placed in this mode via the category in the radial menu will auto collect all types of Veggies, Narcoberries, and Stimberries from nearby crop plots and add them to its inventory.
  • Has double spoiling timer in its inventory for all types of Veggies.
  • Melee attack has a chance of gathering Longrass and Citronal from berry bushes (if not equipped with a weapon).
  • Has 'Aggressive and Turret Mode' option in the radial menu to quickly place the Bigfoot into Turret Mode and put on Aggressive to start throwing its Barrels.

Oil Barrels and Barrel o' Monkeys

Used as ammunition by the Better Gigantopithicus when placed in turret mode. The Oil Barrel is a potent explosive, the Barrel o' Monkeys is a barrel of monkeys which will immediately spawn and be aggressive (monkeys spawned from exploding barrels have a limited lifespan and cannot be interacted with in any way). These do not need to be learned as engrams and are crafted in the Smithy section of the Better Dinos Workbench.

Tek Giganotosaurus
This creature is Buffed

  • Tek Gigas will now spawn with a 5% chance of replacing any regular vanilla Giga.
  • This is the Vanilla Tek Giga, with the added BD Tek Buff. Although the Tek Giga is a vanilla, spawnable creature in the base game files, some people are unable to find the spawn code out for themselves, hence listing it here.
  • Despite being in the base game files and therefore freely accessible, it is not actually directly referenced by any maps and therefore to stop it de-spawning on a server restart it must be directly referenced by a mod such as this one, so do bear that in mind if removing the mod and you have no other mods that do so, they may go poof, but will be absolutely fine as long as you have KBD installed.
  • Has been made Cloneable and Up-loadable
  • Has the KBD Tek Dinos buff meaning that it has a 2% damage and resistance increase, and will poop 'Bio-Oil' instead of regular poop. This can be toggled on and off in the radial menu.
  • Will not spawn if you have other mods that remap the vanilla Giganotosaurus.

This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Now gendered and able to breed. Can gain up to 20% extra speed from imprinting.
  • Removed FPS killing particle effects when hovering.
  • Given an actual targeting team override meaning that wild Griffins will not pointlessly attack every wild dino they see.
  • Increased dive velocity from 4x to 4.5x and improved diving rotation rates.
  • Fixed the Animation Blueprint meaning that wild and unridden AI Controlled Griffins will not suffer from horrible jittery movement.
  • Increased basic LMB attack damage from 27 to 32
  • Reduced melee swing of basic LMB from 750 to 500
  • Can now carry dinos whilst diving.
  • Can benefit from being equipped with Valyrian Reins. See the Valyrian Reins section for more information.

Tek Griffin
This is a Unique Creature

  • Tek Griffin spawns with a 2% chance of replacing any KBD or vanilla Griffin, and is added to the Genesis Lunar Biomes spawner.
  • Tek Griffin has all the same features as both vanilla and KBD Tek Dinos, as well as all the KBD Griffin abilities. Any .Ini configs used for either Tek Dinos or the Griffin will also naturally effect the Tek Griffin. If the Better Griffin is prevented then the vanilla version of the Tek Griffin will spawn.
  • Tek Griffin model a unique creation by Zythera, whose permission was kindly granted to use the model in this mod and to make my own tweaks to it.
  • Tek Griffin will not spawn if you have any other mod that remaps Griffins and that mod is above KBD in the load order, for example Classic Flyers or Naj's Speedy Flyers etc.

Hesperornis
Wild Hesperornis are a Unique Named Remap
Tamed Hesperornis are Buffed

  • Wild Hesperornis will accept the Better Coel, Salmon and Piranha as taming food.
  • Wild Hesperornis can be picked up by dinos. Tamed Hesperornis still cannot be carried by dinos but of course they can be carried by players.
  • Tamed Hesperorniss will require killing 50% less fish before deciding to lay a golden egg.
  • On taming a wild Hesperornis will automatically convert itself to a Vanilla Hesperornis. The wild remap was required in this way to make sure that it was able to be fed the KBD fish to be tamed as Wildcard have neglected some important checks in the taming logic.

Hyaenodon
This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Using any of the Hyaenodons special abilities (ie. petting, sitting, standing) on the Alpha will cause the entire pack to do the same.
  • Come in randomised sizes.
  • Improved tamed rotation rate.
  • The very largest Hyaenodons (1.3 sized) can now be ridden.
  • You cannot specifically breed for size as the Ark breeding mechanics do not currently allow such a thing, but any bred Hyaenodon has a chance of popping out as a 1.3 size regardless of what size its parents are.

  • Reduced aggro range of wild Ichthyornis.
  • On taming a wild Ichthyornis will automatically convert itself to a Vanilla Ichthyornis. The wild remap was required in this way as the stealing logic is unexposed to being altered otherwise. The tamed Ichtyornis did not need to be altered and so this was the most elegant way of doing it.

Jerboa
This creature is altered via CDO edit

  • Will now spawn at the same level as all other creatures and is not restricted to just being the lowest possible level when wild.
Kaprosuchus
This creature is Buffed

  • Dropped drag weight to be able to be bola'd/carried by Argents again.
Kairuku
This creature is Buffed

  • Will not disappear when being over damaged by a high melee dino, allowing them to actually be harvested for their sweet, sweet polymer.
Karkinos (Crab)
This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Now able to breed. To enable breeding though both the male and female Karkinos must be fully submerged in water to be able to get it on. Lays underwater eggs.
  • Can now attack using its top pincers when in a falling state, eg. when air pinned by enemy creatures.
  • Killing wild Karkinos will sometimes drop 1 or 2 Edible Crab Claws, these can be used in place of Deathworm horns for taming Mantis (for compatibility with my Additional Aberrant Dinos mod which introduces Aberrant Mantis) or can be used in place of Rhino Horns for recipes that require them (ie. Broth of Enlightenment) as Rhino Horns are not readily available on Aberration.
  • Uses same method of carrying with both claws when tamed to prevent dropping things with the right claw and not the left.
  • Able to walk sideways, like a good crab should.
  • New Attack, press X (Prone) when riding to initiate a 360 degree spin attack inflicting multiple hits.
  • Karkinos is now able to be equipped with a small Platform Saddle.
  • Pick up a tamed allied Glowpet with your left claw with the Platform Saddle equipped to mount the Glowpet on the Crabs head and take it for a ride! This serves a practical purpose as all Platform Saddles will block the Charge light buff from being placed on the rider from a shoulder mounted Glowpet, which will cause Nameless to spawn. Glowpets mounted this way will not draw aggro except from Seekers, and cannot be damaged, just as if they were mounted on your shoulder.
  • While a Glowpet is mounted, you can toggle its light on and off by pressing your Alt Fire button (Left Ctrl by default).
  • Glowpet can be unmounted from the Crab by selecting the option from the radial menu.
  • Now able to grab Flyers (can be prevented via .Ini)

Lamprey and Leech
These creatures are Unique Named Remaps

  • Will now be properly tamed when being captured in a fish basket meaning that they can gain experience and be levelled and will be able to eat from tribe troughs. Note that after the first capture and release, you will then need to capture and release them a second time using another fish basket, Cryopod, Soul Ball or similar to get them properly tamed and able to gain XP etc.
  • Are now properly colourised.
  • Repositioned Leech on screen when attached to character so that it is not right in the middle of your view.
  • Will now only stay attached for a maximum of ten minutes.
  • When the timer runs out, or if the Leech/Lamprey is removed via fire damage, multiuse, or eating Nameless Venom for the Lamprey, the living creature will drop off. Both wild and tamed will then have a five minute cool down where they won't aggro on anything as they are too full of bloody goodness.
  • Tamed versions of both creatures have the ability to attach them to yourself via the radial menu, this will give you the regular Leech/Lamprey debuffs. In addition to the regular Leech/Lamprey debuffs you will also receive other effects:
    • Attaching a tamed Diseased Leech to yourself will give you Swamp Fever.
    • Attaching a tamed regular Leech to yourself will grant you an 'Inspiration' buff, the combination of loss of blood and something in the leeches saliva will grant you a 125% crafting speed buff (similar to Focal Chilli).
    • Tamed Leeches will have Blood Packs in their inventory when dropping off of a player. They will have 2 packs for each minute that they stayed attached.
  • The Lamprey poison debuff will be shortened in duration if you have a higher amount of fortitude, allowing you to recover from that and keep the anti-radiation and charge light buff for the whole ten minutes that the Lamprey is attached (for both tamed and wild Lampreys).
  • Tamed Leeches can be harvested for Leech Blood via the Radial Menu. Tamed Diseased Leeches can be harvested for lots of Leech Blood and Diseased Bile which if consumed will give you Swamp Fever. The amount harvested scales with the Leeches overall health.
  • Tamed Leeches and Lampreys can either be fed Spun Blood Globs (crafted in the BD Workbench Preserving Bin section for 1 Blood Pack) or if attached to a player when dropping off they will have full health and food restored.
  • Lampreys and Leeches are now breedable. They use genderless breeding meaning that both mating creatures will produce an offspring, which is done through gestation. Gestating Leeches and Lamprey's cannot be manually attached to a player, although they can still attach themselves to enemy players and dinos by attacking. This will cause them to lose the baby. Similarly babies cannot be manually attached to players, and baby Leeches cannot be harvested for Leech Blood or Diseased Bile. Both types of babies will request Blood Packs as their cuddle food, but otherwise will eat Spun Blood Globs.
  • Both Lampreys and Leeches will retain any buffs they had when being attached to a player or a dino when they drop off again. This is mainly for compatibility with buff based mods such as Shiny!
  • Tamed Leeches and Lampreys can be converted back to vanilla at any point, however you will not be able to convert them back to the KBD version as the vanilla versions are unable to be buffed and cannot receive the required conversion buff.

Liopleurodon
This is a Unique Creature

  • Complete overhaul of this creature. Spawns alongside the regular sparkly magical one on any map that uses the Island 'Ocean' spawners.
  • Permanent tame, and breedable. The Better Liop has much different stats than the temporary original. Unlike the original, the Better Liop can be grabbed by Tusos and is not immune to Eels or Jellyfish.
  • Can reverse and strafe.
  • Immune to the Salmon Bleed debuff.
  • Can be equipped with saddle which can be crafted in the Smithy section of the Better Dinos workbench.
  • Saddle allows the Liop to carry its rider plus 1 passenger.
  • Gives Liop Oil buff to rider and passenger which gives vastly reduced Oxy consumption, better underwater vision, and increased swim speed while active. Buff will last for a short time after dismounting the Liop.
  • Right Mouse Button triggers 'Chomp' attack, launching the Liop forwards and dealing large damage. The Liop is able to grab small sea creatures this way and chomp on them at its leisure. This attack will be used by wild Liops. If grabbed by a wild Liop causing it damage will eventually force it drop you.
  • C key will be a more gentle grab attack, allowing you to pick up small sea creatures without damaging them for carrying off elsewhere.
  • The Liop is a KO tame, and prefers 'Superior' kibble. For taming and breeding refer to the Plesi food amounts and times although note that the Liop has lower torpor than the Plesio.
  • Can craft a 'Felix Felicitas' Luck Potion in the Liops inventory. This will grant the same loot crate affecting buff as the magical original and lasts for ten minutes.
  • X version of this BD flagship dino spawns on Genesis in the Ocean biome.
  • Liop is now an Oceanic healer!
  • Similiar mechanics to the Deaodon, Liop heal can be toggled as a passive heal, or when riding by pressing your Prone key (X by default).
  • Unlike the Daeodon, Liop healing does not drain food, instead it drains a new stat 'Mana'
    Mana can be levelled and has points wasted into Oxygen re-assigned to it.
  • Mana will slowly regenerate over time, or can be restored by feeding Liops 'Mana Restoration Potions' which can be crafted in the Preserving Bin section of the BD Workbench and will restore 100 Mana each. These must be force fed to the Liop.
  • Liops that drop below 10% Mana will suffer from 'Mana Exhaustion', further decreasing its speed, draining its health and increasing its torpidity and causing the Liop to both do 25% less damage and receive 25% more damage.
  • Mana percentage level will be shown as the 'Rage' meter under the main stats.

This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Left Click tusk attack no longer stops movement and is once more the Mammoths primary wood harvesting attack. This attack will no longer gather berries. If harvesting whilst moving then you will gather mostly thatch. If stationary when harvesting will gather wood using the beavers damage type.
  • Space Bar stomp attack can still be used to harvest berries, but will not harvest wood.
  • Able to craft all vanilla wooden structures in its inventory at 1.5x crafting speed.
  • Capable of using a Mammoth Platform Saddle, can not be carried by raft or platform saddle, or carried by a Quetz or similar if it is equipped with a platform saddle itself.
  • Doubled base stamina, increased base weight, and reduced stamina usage of all attacks by 50%
  • Decreased speed gained on taming from 100% to 35%. Increased base speed and lowered rotation rates. This does mean that the Better Mammoth is slower all told than the vanilla mammoth, however these speeds work much better with the new walking and running animations, and better fit the dossier description.

    • 2x damage inflicted as stamina drain over 20 seconds.

  • Further attacks will prolong the effects by a further 20 seconds, as long as you can see the red particle effect signifying that the dino is 'Rabid' then torpor will still be rising. Dinos who cannot become torpid will not gain the particle effect.

Replaced the moving attack animation to be one that does not cause hideous distortions of the arms as it attempts to claw its own throat out. This animation is slightly slower than the vanilla but I feel that's a fair trade.

Triceratops
This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Size increased by 30%
  • All stats increased by 50% from vanilla, this includes required Affinity for taming, as well as an additional boost to torpor.
  • Trikes are now Pack Dinos, and as such the Pack Leader will receive an additional damage and resistance buff. Pack Leaders for regular and Aberrant Trikes can be identified by their glowing red frill.
  • Preferred taming kibble changed to Superior Kibble. Please bear in mind that when taming a Trike if you are referring to a taming calculator such as DodoDex, you will require more (and different) kibble than it states, and it will take longer as well as requiring more tranqs to KO.
  • All attacks also do 50% more damage than vanilla, and charge attack damage will scale with the melee damage multiplier.
  • Charge attack now also deals bonus damage depending on the mass of the target, causing more damage against enemies with a higher mass. This attack now also deals armour penetrating damage, and can damage dino riders.
  • LMB attack no longer stops movement. Added a stomp attack to the C button. Added a cosmetic Taunt to the X button, this can only be performed by Pack Leader Trikes, and will be copied by any of their accompanying pack.
  • Melee attacks that hit the Trikes horns or frill will cause 20% of the dealt damage to be reflected back onto the damage causer.
  • As the Trike is very much improved over the vanilla version, it can no longer really be classed as a starter dino, and therefore the level of its saddle has been raised to 34. Should you wish to lower, or even raise this even further via .Ini, please refer to the new engram entry below.

  • Tek Trike spawns with a 2% chance of replacing any KBD or vanilla Trike, and replaces Tek Trikes spawned in the Genesis Lunar Biomes spawner.
  • Tek Trike has all the same features as both vanilla and KBD Tek Dinos, as well as all the KBD Trike abilities. Any .Ini configs used for either Tek Dinos or the Trike will also naturally effect the Tek Trike.
  • Has the KBD Tek Dinos buff meaning that it has a 2% damage and resistance increase, and will poop 'Bio-Oil' instead of regular poop. This can be toggled on and off in the radial menu.
  • This is a unique named remap rather than a same named remap due to its introduction being before Wildcard added the Tek Trike as a vanilla creature in the game, and as other mods were also using the vanilla naming convention it was necessary to make it a unique name to prevent conflicts. Therefore, should you wish to remove KBD from your game, make sure that all Tek Trikes are converted to Vanilla first to make sure they do not get lost.

This is obtainable earlier than the cannon saddle, and although the Tropeo is rideable without a saddle, will help to provide some armour to your Tropeos, or can be used in place of the cannon saddle if your server prefers a more primitive play style. Unicorn
This creature is a Same Named Remap

  • Has a 10% increase in size, tamed health, damage, and speed.
  • Horn is now colourised and glowy. In addition the Unicorn now uses its colour regions and therefore is able to be admin coloured, gain event colours, or mutations etc.
  • Now able to become a magical Pegasus by using the C attack whilst riding. Pressing G (Drag) will revert it back to regular Unicorn mode. This does of course allow you to fly, and provides a close range AoE buff to allied dinos providing health regen. and boost to XP gain (only provides health regen. if allied dino is under 80% health. Does not effect Unicorns themselves).
  • Being in Pegasus form will drain your Mana over time. Max Mana is equal to the Unicorns Max Stamina stat, and as such will increase with increases to the Unicorns stamina. Mana can be topped up by force feeding the Unicorn Mana Restoration potions, and will regenerate over time when not in Pegasus form. Be careful that you don't completely deplete your Unicorns Mana, if it does get completely used up and reaches zero, you will not be able to use it again until you have regained a minimum of 80% Mana.
  • Is unable to fly on those maps where flyers are prevented such as Genesis (but will still be able to be ridden and use magical buff)
  • Note that as the Unicorn is now classed as a flyer it cannot be picked up except by those creatures that are able to grab flyers, eg. Megalosaurus and KBD Crabs.
  • Aberrant Unicorn will spawn if Additional Aberrant Dinos is installed, replacing the 'Vanilla' Aberrant Unicorn from that mod.
  • R-Unicorn has a very small chance of spawning in place of any Eden Equus.

PreventBetterUnicorn=False
Setting to True will prevent the Better Unicorn from spawning and revert all existing ones back to vanilla
PreventPegasus=False
Setting to True will prevent the Better Unicorn from being able to transform into a Pegasus. This only prevents the Unicorn from being able to fly, it will still be able to provide its magical buff to allies

Aberrant Unicorn:

This creature is a Unique Named Remap

  • Has all the same attributes as the normal KBD Unicorn
  • Will only spawn naturally on Aberration if Additional Aberrant Dinos is installed and KBD is above it in the load order as it remaps the Aberrant Unicorn introduced by that mod, or with a 10% chance of replacing KBD Unicorns on any map if using the RandomAberrants=True or RandomAberrantsBDOnly=True .Ini options
  • Tamed Aberrant Unicorns can be manually converted between the KBD and AAD versions at will.

Wyverns
These creatures are Buffed

  • All types of vanilla Wyverns are supported, including the three OG, Ice, Crystal, and Void Wyrms.
  • Wild Wyverns of all types have a chance of dropping Valyrian Reins in their wild death drop inventories. Alpha Wyverns have a small chance of dropping a Zombie Wyvern Costume instead of regular Valyrian Reins.
  • Female tamed Wyverns can be milked every two hours for between 1 and 3 Wyvern Milk through the radial menu. Female Crystal Wyverns can be harvested for Primal Crystal instead of Wyverns Milk, and female Void Wyrms will be harvested for Element Shards. It should be noted that as the KBD Wyverns abilities are handled through a buff, cryopodding or soul balling a Wyvern will reset the Milking timers back to full on release.
  • Cosmetic Roar animation added to alt-fire key (Left Ctrl as default)
  • Now drop 'Tough Hide' instead of regular hide which can be used to craft Valyrian Reins.
  • Crystal Wyverns can be given their skull helmet by toggling it in the radial menu under Options.
  • Void Wyrms have the KBD Tek Dinos buff meaning that they have a 2% damage and resistance increase, and will poop 'Bio-Oil' instead of regular poop. This can be toggled on and off in the radial menu.
  • Can benefit from being equipped with Valyrian Reins. See the Valyrian Reins section for more information.
