Description
Era - Late 1940s / 1950s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Geraldo Ramos Ponciano Valdes, better known as Nino Valdes, was a tall, lanky Cuban export in the 50s Heavyweight divsion who made his impact with wild swinging hooks and overhands, fighitng a long list of notable fighters of his era.

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1924, Nino Valdes grew up doing a variety of odd jobs around the city, working bowling alleys, cafeterias, and doing construction and longshoreman work as he grew older. Valdes fought through the 40s, but found a lack of quality opposition in his home country within his weight class, with the majority of the better Cuban fighters plying their trade in the lower divisions. A trio of exhibition fights with the great Joe Louis took place between 1949 and 1950, but Valdes found his career was stalled out to the point of taking a year away from boxing.

Traveling to New York City following the break, Valdes found a new management team and with a new direction, fought in the United States on a regular basis against many of the best of the day. Losses to Bob Baker and Light Heavy standouts Harold Johnson and Archie Moore followed, but Valdes truly propelled himself forward with a huge win over former Heavyweight champ, Ezzard Charles in 1953. A two year win streak would follow, including a victory over Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson and Don Cockell, only to be broken by another loss to Moore, and a brutal series of fights would take place, taking on Bob Satterfield, Baker again, Eddie Machen, and Zora Folley all with the results in the losing column.
