Description
Check out an updated and expanded Plantoids mod by Mute: Stellaris Plantoids Extended It includes ideas from this mod and is up to date!

New Mechanics for Plantoids
With the introduction of Lithoids and their fancy trait to make them consume minerals, It is clear that Plantoids deserve some love. Now the Plantoid trait is automatically applied to all Plantoid pops, which makes them both consumer energy instead of food, and produce energy instead of food from farms. (As clearly, Plantoid farmers are simply pops wandering out into fields to sun themselves.) This will make them play more like a regular empire than Lithoids, as they can still use all district types, and dont recieve a modifiers to habitability or growth speed. In addition, they gain access to additional traits, Lush which replaces Agrarian and improves the energy output of Plantoid Farmers, and Carnivorous Plant which lets you live out your Little Shop of Horrors dreams in Stellaris.

Carnivorous Plantoids
With this trait, your pops will consume half energy, and half food. However, thanks to the fact that Plantoid farmers produce energy instead of food, they have no natural way of feeding themselves. In fact, Carnivorous plants have developed a taste for Pops, and they need a source of livestock, be that a syncretic species, an unfortunate neighbor, or a gullible migrant. If Carnivorous plants do not have a source of livestock on the planet they live, the will either begin to starve, or eat other pops at random. However, they will start out with a randomly generated subspecies with the new livestock trait. These livestock can only be employed as livestock on farms, but they will produce food and satiate Carnivorous plantoids. Carnivorous Hive minds will also have livestock pops, the livestock trait allows them to coexist with a hive even without the hivemind trait. Oddly, on game start hive livestock will be show to be being purged, however, this will fix itself as soon as you unpause. Livestock are set by default to have population controls enabled, so if you want to increase your supply later on you will need to allow their population to grow.

Changes to Livestock
With Carnivorous Plantoids making more use of livestock, I made a few improvements to that policy. First, you will be able to pick it despite ethics restrictions if your main species is Carnivorous. Second, livestock pops now work regular jobs instead of simply adding in a free and infinite supply of jobs that ignore normal district and building job restrictions (not to mention often lead to weird graphical glitches like negative jobs) So, you will need farming districts to farm your livestock pops in. If you do not have enough farms, they can also work in mines and power facilities, but since mine-fed pop do not taste nearly as good as grass fed, these livestock will produce far less food, not to mention the threat of becoming plant food makes them less enthusiastic about their work.

The Stranglevine
Plantoids have a custom version of the devouring swarm civic- A Stranglevine. These genocidal vegans want to turn the rest of the galaxy into fertilizer, all xeno pops that are being purged will add pop growth speed instead of food, letting you capture a planet, make up a batch of xeno mulch, and quickly grow your own population in its place. Note, the civic view is a little buggy, so it may still show devouring swarm in the UI. Usually this fixes itself, and the mecahnics will work regardless. Same issue can happen with the Lithoid Terravore. Also, all plantoid empires get the purge type for pop growth. It is simply the processing purge type, it will work once picked, unfortunately the tooltip doesnt know you are a plant so it will still say it produces food in the species screen. It doesnt.

Compatibility
This mod overwrites all pop_categories, pop_jobs, species_rights, species_classes, species_archetypes. This is more overwrites than I generally like to make, but it turns out pops are pretty stubborn about wanting to eat food. Since it overwrites jobs, it is currently not compatible with one of my other mods, Local Production, but I should be able to get a patch or fix for that relatively soon. Because it adds a new archetype, it will not be compatible with trait mods, at least for plantoids.

I'll use Plantoids Extended as you suggest, but just wanted to chime in to say this mod idea is genius and simply hilarious.

I hope this gets updated soon, there is the "Plantoid" mod now, but that's broken.

Cool concept. I'll keep an eye on it for when it plays nicely with Necroids.
