Baserunner - v3.5 (Homeworld DoK)

Description
My latest overhaul to the Baserunner. The core of this upgrade is the new script for the rotor suspension. Other features include LCD support, a rotor turret, a hangar crane and several quality-of-life improvements.

The upgraded suspension will now automatically adjust itself based on the local gravity and the current mass of the vehicle. It now tweaks the suspension while turning for much improved handling and also controls the max steering angles (Ackermann-Steering) for tighter and more stable turns.

Safe top speed has increased to ~120 km/h without scrificing reliability. More momentum will help you overcome slopes much easier.

Make sure to enable scripts in the world options and reset ownership if one of the scripts misbehaves.

Have fun!

If you want to push the vehicle's performance even further, here's a mod I created which will help with friction:

The 3.5 Baserunner comes with one of my mods. Unmoded non-suspended wheels and rotors aren't reliable enough imo and limit heavy vehicles in several ways. I was no longer willing to accept these limitations and thus created a mod that eliminates them. The mod doesn't include new parts and it won't impact your fps. I wouldn't have included it otherwise. It simply tweaks a few stats in the game's config files to improve reliability, torque and speed for rotors and wheels.

I always wanted to provide a polished replica of this awesome vehicle for all the Homeworld fans out there. Looks like I'm finally getting there : )

Other scripts in use:

This one controls the LCD's in the cockpit. Flexible, very easy to work with and it looks neat. I'll probably put this to work in any future project of mine:

This one's from Whiplash. It allows the large rotor turret to be controlled and automated via the small designator turret next to it. Very handy.

Extra credits go to:

Malware for creating awesome tools for scripting, as well as maintaining the wiki for it on GitHub. I would've never managed to get this down without it. It's one of the very few reliable and up-to-date sources on scripting out there and I can't stress enough how important his work is to newbies. Thx man! I really appreciate it.
Which brings me to the next mention. The space engineers discord channel features a sub-category full of awesome people that will help anyone seeking to advise on scripting. They helped me several times when I was absolutely hitting a wall. Thanks again for all your help and feedback! You are great.

The rough shape and dimensions of this vehicle are based on a workshop upload by Skeleton. I used it with his approval and even though I completely rebuild it inside out, it was a great place to start back then. It saved me a lot of time and gave me a great testbed to figure out the suspension. He deserves credit for that.

This obviously wouldn't be complete without mentioning Homeworld Deserts of Kharak. This upload is a 1:1 replica from the Baserunner in that game. I tried to stay as close as possible to the original because it's awesome. I just love to watch these things jump over dunes ; )

Also, yes! I'm obviously hyped for Homeworld 3.

There's regular wheels which you can slap on a frame and be ready to drive. And then there's the basic wheel block which can be stacked as double wheels. That's what I used. It can't steer or rotate on its own though. That requires rotors (which is what this whole thing is about).

how do double wheel

I haven't touched SE in a long time but "no mods" sounds like the problem here. The vehicle is meant to be used with a mod (it's actually included and should download automatically). Vanilla wheels are fairly squishy and prone to exploding for no good reason. They can't handle vehicles of this size and speed. Here's the mod, just in case:

If that doesn't work, an update of SE might have broken the mod.

Amazing build! I love it!

I finally made the effort to determine and calculate the *exact* forces in the suspension. That finally removed the 'bouncy castle' syndrome where the suspension would resonate like a pendulum and jump uncontrollably.

The script now also grabs the info on current vehicle mass as well as current gravity. Now you can simply throw it onto whatever planet you want and the suspension should adjust itself properly without further input.

This monster has suspension for days. It's surprisingly easy to scale the thing up, as well because who wouldn't want a mammoth sized mobile base.

Anyways, I love the design, it works great, and wheel/ rotor durability mod is an absolute must have. A few friends and I have been using it for monster trucks and rams.

I ran into some troubles with uploading videos on youtube. A detailed walkthrough with explainations for all the features will follow as soon as youtube finishes that upload.

I originally planned for a later release. Somehow the workshop's visibility must've switched however. It's a sneak preview now! : P
