Robin Hood - Prince of Sherwood

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

Britons have always been my favorite civilization in Age of Empires II. Yet for some reason, the developers never allowed us to play a campaign *as* them, even though Medieval England has many heroic tales to tell. One such tale that almost every child knows, is of Robin Hood. I came across him as a hero unit (along with Friar Tuck) in the scenario editor and always wondered why they never found their way into a campaign. Thus, at the tender age of 12 and only owning a German version of the Age of Kings, I decided to create my own campaign (this is why you will find German text in the scenario images). I created 5 of the 6 scenarios this way back in the mid 2000s, including map layout and major objectives, but the trigger work was still in its infancy, just like my skills in making maps pretty with "decorations". I recently returned to Age of Empires II (thanks to the HD edition) at the ripe old age of 28, and thus decided to spend the summer improving on this campaign I had created as a kid, including translating everything into English and adding one additional scenario set in the heart of winter, exploiting the additional map tools of The Conquerors expansion. Devising a map, and making all the triggers work are two completely different things, and so I spent most of the summer 2019 editing and testing until I felt like the campaign was working well enough for me to publish it for the first time.

cheers and have fun playing,
Arun

Fun campaign, if you ever return to it, the 5th level could use some play testing. Triggers wouldn't complete. But overall I enjoyed it.

The campaign is enjoyable in general. I really liked the map design and the general atmosphere of the story. It felt nice playing an English based campaign. There are though a couple of issues that I have to point out.
1) Hero units, given their stats, would be better remaining away from battles, which is pity.
2) The fact that Little John constantly changed skin was not very useful.
3) Lastly, in a few cases there was too much automatic camera movement. It's helpful in order to point out a couple of things if you feel like to, but for example at the scenario with the barbarians, the first battle becomes a bit frustrating due to the unnecessary back and forth during several moments while you're being attacked and you have to micro (even a little) in order to win.

Hey there, thanks for the feedback. In the 1st scenario, there is a mini-quest required to open the gate leading to the central plaza, which involves you exploring (and walking up to a character living in) a different part of the city first. However, if you mean the main gate that leads outside the city, well, since the freeze units trigger is so buggy, I have a trigger that makes a Palisade Wall (which keeps several red guards near the main gates so they dont wander off) disappear when Robin approaches it, so that the guards remain in place and only attack Robin by then. Not sure why it didn't work for you and I am even less sure how you managed to solve this by not killing any guards - you are supposed to kill any you please.

I found the campaign very interesting and good support.

No spoilers, but I had problems with the 1st scenario, I suppose I'm not to kill any guards to get the gate open, and destroying the monastery does nothing.

I speed ran the scenarios and used cheat codes when necessary.

Overall very good!
