Era - 2000s - Sumo

A controvercial, charismatic, dominant rikishi, Asashoryu may not have always been seen as an exemplary upholder of the sport's traditional ethos, but he brought a fierce competitive spirit and powerful techniques to the table.

Born in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 1980, Asashoryu trained in Mongolian Wrestling and Judo before traveling to Japan as an exchange student and entering into the sport of Sumo. He wasted little time in rising up the ranks and earned the status of Yokozuna in 2003. From this point to 2007, Asashoryu was the only Yokozuna in Sumo, a record in the sport. In 2007, he had to skip a regional tour due to injuries, but was subsequently seen on Mongolian television participating in a charity soccer match, resulting in a suspension and fine by the Sumo Association.
