Description
Era - 1940s / 1950s - Boxing - Middleweight

A champ at Light Heavyweight who also fought for the Heavyweight title, Joey Maxim could throw jabs with the rapidity of his machine gun namesake, was a standout defensive boxer but lacked the high end power to consistently knock out the many world class and Hall of Fame quality opponents he went up against.

Born as Giuseppe Antonio Beradinelli in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922, the man who would take on the name of Joey Maxim as a professional would join the pros in 1940, boxing exhibitions during World War II. He beat Jersey Joe Walcott in 1946, and Jimmy Bivins in 1949, all the while, winning fights at Light Heavyweight and losing fights to Ezzard Charles, dropping five unanswered losses to the Cincinatti Cobra through his career, including a World Heavyweight title attempt in 1951.

Maxim, though, took on that challenge already a champion, having won the Light Heavyweight title from Freddie Mills in 1949. He held onto his belt, defending in 1952 against the arguable best of all time in Sugar Ray Robinson who, having defined greatness at Welterweight and Middleweight, was looking to climb up another class. Robinson more than held his own, but the terrible heat of the day at Yankee Stadium was enough to force referee Ruby Goldstein to quit the fight early, and Robinson called it a fight after the fourteenth round.

Maxim lost the title later in the year to the great Archie Moore, and although the two would fight again, the outcome remained the same.
