Link, The Hero

Link, of The Legend of Zelda fame.

Link is a seasoned adventurer, and well equipped for whatever may come his way in the wilderness. His experience has jaded him to the point of sanity being a non-issue. He'll fight a king of nightmare-beasts before breakfast, and not even blink at it.

He is used to living off what's available, and has developed a strong stomach.

Compared to the average character, Link is faster, stronger, and tougher. However, he has a smaller stomach, and faster hunger rate - running around, and fighting like that burns off the calories much faster! Link is perhaps best played as a hunter - hunt, kill, and eat monsters to stay alive. Or, failing monsters… adorable, harmless little bunnies. You monster.

Link brings a number of Hero's Items with him on his adventure.

All Hero's Items are unbreakable, and uncraftable. So don't lose them!

Simply download and apply this little tweak!

*Can you port this to Don't Starve Together?

I intend to try. My lingering health problems have made it difficult to work comfortably on this yet-unfinished project, much less look into porting it to what basically amounts to another game.
If I can do it, it will happen. But it's going to have to wait.

*Is it DLC compatible?

Yes. And it does have upgrades for DLC mechanics - the Red Tunic will save you from summer heat, while the Blue will function as a raincoat.

*Can you make Link not start with all his items, and have to find them on the map?

This is something I've been planning since very early in the mod's development.
It will be a very difficult thing to implement, and likely the last thing to be attempted, but I plan to split the mod into two versions - this one, "Link, the Hero," who starts with all the equipment, and "Link, the Adventurer." who starts with nothing at all, and must find the Hero's equipment in a series of dungeons, scattered across the world.
The easily-crafted Wooden Sword and Shield will be quick and easy defensive equipment, with this version. This is the primary reason for their low costs. They're sort of "emergency" items for "Link, the Hero," but essential tools for the Adventurer.

So, yes, it's coming, but don't expect it very soon. =)

*Where's the bow?

The Bow is not yet implemented, for technical reasons. It will be added later, when the tools are available.
Arrows have been added in anticipation of this future addition - they burn, so you can throw them on the fire, if you need to do something with them.

*What are the Rupees for?

They will be used as currency with the Shopkeeper - this is a feature that has not yet been implemented, and thus, the Rupees do not have any function, at this time.

*Where did my fairy go?

The fairy is buggy. Regrettably so. She is at present unable to enter Wormholes, and has a nast habit of getting stuck on the environment. You can get her back if you retrace your steps. She will be fixed in future. (The fact that she's gotten progressively broken over time leads me to think she needs a complete overhaul.)

*This doesn't work with RPG HUD!

Actually, it does. I even recommend it for best experience.
It does not, however, work with RPG HUD Neat - you must use the RPG HUD Default version.
I believe this is because of Link's added Magic Meter, and removed Sanity.
Alas, I cannot do anything to fix this, so all I can tell you is to use the Default version instead. Pair it with Always-On Status, for best results.

*Are you still working on this?

Kind of.
Alas, I am just one frail girl. I have permanent health issues that limit my ability to work on such projects.
It's very much taken a back-seat to original games I am working on with my girlfriend - I'm sure you'll agree that original games are more exciting than a mod held together with rubber bands and paper clips!

I have to be realistic.
I might come back to this, but if you hadn't figured out yet... for the foreseeable future there will officially be no updates from me. My girlfriend and I are putting all our effort into original games, and we've got quite a list of projects - some we've started to various degrees, and others in design phases.
We're currently (as of 09/2017) in active, focussed development on two smaller projects, with some larger ones ready to go after.
I simply don't have the time or energy to devote to something like this.

It's still a project I love and am proud of, I just have a lot in my life, and this has to take the lowest priority.

More detailed information can be found in the official thread:

Updated in v1.10: Only small bug fixes this time around, but small things that caused big problems!
Some little goofs with the tunics are notable, the fairy as talker has been reversed until the fairy is... well, reliable... and most importantly, I've fixed the issues with gamepad support!

Enjoy being able to actually use the shield's expanded inventory space, and everything else, with a gamepad!

The mod doesn't work. It always crashes when I load it. Being a Zelda fan, I'd really love for this to be fixed. :)

I love this mod so freaking much. I've been playing don't starve for over three years and this was the first mod I ever got. It made me so happy and I played with it constantly. When it broke, and I couldnt play it anymore, I stopped playing DS for a few months. It just made me sad because it reminded me that my favorite mod didn't work anymore. While I really do love this mod and hope to see it fixed in the future, I also know you're a chronically ill person with an entire life and priorities outside of this small thing. Take the time you need, and if you never return to this mod then so be it! Nothing will ever ruin the hours of joy this mod gave me. Take care of yourself first and foremost, I cant wait to see what else you accomplish and come up with! <3

you could you rename the file to "[Broken] Link, The Hero" that would prevent people for still trying to use it,
another thing you could do is open it up the the public by changing the licence,
which would allow another modder to adopt it / fix it.

I'm really sorry everyone; I just haven't had the time to get back to this and try to get it working again. Life can be pretty hectic. I can't promise when I'll get to this - or if it will be soon - but it's absolutely on my radar!

This was my all time favorite mod... I understand that you've got bigger and better stuff going on and I wish you the best. But I do hope you someday come back to this and update because it was awesome!!
