Description
Era - 1730s / 1740s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Considered by some to be the father of modern boxing, Jack Broughton did as much as anyone to codify a focused set of rules, introduced the use of gloves and was a master of tactics in his own right.

Born in Baunton in Gloucestershire, England in 1704, Broughton was born into a farming family, but learned his trade in Bristol, where he worked as a longshoreman, and took up boxing against local challengers. This brought him to the attention of James Figg, who relocated Broughton to London, and Figg's Amphtheatre, the center of the English boxing world. Receiving first class training and foes, Broughton defeated George Taylor for the Heavyweight title in 1738.

In 1741, Broughton inflicted grevious damage on George Stevenson, which resulted in his death several days after the fight. Shaken by the incident, Broughton took it upon himself to formulate a new set of rules to clean up the sport. By 1743, Broughton's Rules were codified, banning strikes against a fallen fighter, keeping the ring clear of spectators, and eliminating grappling below the waist, while allowing a half minute after a knockdown for the competitor to recover. In addition, taking inspiration from the Greek Cestus of ancient times, Broughton encouraged the use of lightweight "mufflers," padded gloves, for protection during sparring and training.

Broughton remained champion until 1750, when he took on the Norfolk Butcher, Jack Slack, who was simply too strong and robust for Broughton, temporarily blinding him with a punch and winning the title in fourteen minutes.
