Description
Era - 1880s / 1890s - Boxing - Heavyweight

The Original George Godfrey was a fast, skilled pugilist who was small of size for his weight class, but not small of punch, and despite being held back due to his skin color, still took on many of the best of the time.

Born in 1853 in Charlottetown, Canada, a poor rural community, Godfrey trained under ♥♥♥♥ Cronin in his youth, and moved to Boston in 1870, where he continued his training, eventually going professional in 1879. While he started off later than many, Godfrey quickly gained accolades, winning the Colored Heavyweight championship, a prize available for many fighters who were unjustly barred from fighting for the mainstream Heavyweight belt.

Godfrey was outright ducked by John L. Sullivan, with a potential fight almost happening in 1881, with Sullivan either backing down, or the police intervening beforehand, depending on the account. He did manage to face strong opponents, such as Peter Jackson, Joe Choynski, Peter Maher and in an exceptional forty four round bout, Jake Kilrain.
