Description
Era - Late 1890s / 1900s - Boxing - Middleweight

A top threat from Middlweight to Heavyweight, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien found no challenge he was unwilling to meet in the ring. His fast feet and solid jab were more than enough to keep all but the very best at bay.

Born in 1878 in the city that he was known for, Joseph Francis Anthony Hagen grew up taking after the famous James J. Corbett. Taking the ring name of Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, he set to do just that. O'Brien believed that, as speed and sound skills were Corbett's calling card, he would make them his own as well.

By 1905, O'Brien won the Light Heavyweight championship of the world from the hard hitting Bob Fitzsimmons, but by the following year, tried to move up another step, challenging Tommy Burns for the Heavyweight belt. This venture ended in a dubious draw, with Burns chasing O'Brien around the ring and bloodying his face. A second meeting between the two ended in a decision for Burns. A close loss to the relentless Stanley Ketchel resulted in an official loss, but many felt O'Brien should have won.

Wins over excellent fighters such as Joe Choynski and Fireman Jim Flynn followed along with a brave attempt at defeating the great Jack Johnson in a no-decision bout that was roundly argued among the sportswriters at the time.
