Description
Era - 1960s - Boxing - Lightweight

Masahiko "Fighting" Harada is seen by many as the finest boxer ever to hail from Japan. His blinding speed and relentless approach gained the Flyweight and Bantamweight titles over his career and even came close to winning the Featherweight belt.

Harada was born in Tokyo in 1943, growing up in post-WWII Japan and turning pro in 1960, winning the All Japan rookie tournament in the same year. Despite a loss at Bantamweight in 1962 againt Edmundo Esparza, Harada would move down to Flyweight where he defeated Thailand's Pone Kingpetch. He did not hold onto the belt for long, dropping a rematch to Kingpetch.

After this, Harada moved back up to Bantam, where he encountered the great Brazilian champion, Eder Jofre and defeated him for the title, and in a rematch, retired Jofre, albeit, temporarily.

As Harada's career continued, he moved up to a third division, looking to win the Featherweight title against Australian boxer Johnny Famechon but lost a controvercial decision with referee Willie Pep changing his decision from a draw to a win for Famechon after the partisan Australian crowd jeered the initial call.
