Young Lion Yagi had a busy first four months of the year with thirty matches under his belt. He often teamed with or against fellow young lions Ren Narita and Shota Umino. The trio debuted around the same time last year (Umino in April, Yagi in May, and Narita in July), establishing a generational connection despite Yagi being a few years older than the other two. Yagi’s two singles matches against Narita in March would both end in time limit draws, while his two singles matches against Umino would result in a pinfall loss and another time limit draw. Outside of that trio, Yagi wrestled and lost to Tomoyuki Oka twice, but did score the first singles victories of his career when he defeated the less experienced rookie Yuya Uemura twice in April.

Yagi’s last match was on April 20th when he teamed with Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Toa Henare in a loss to Manabu Nakanishi, Tiger Mask, & Yuji Nagata. Soon after it was revealed that Yagi had suffered a right ulna fracture in his arm and he would be out for some time. Months went by without an update until October 12th, when New Japan announced that Yagi had decided to retire from wrestling for personal reasons.
