Description
Era - 1920s / 1930s - Boxing - Lightweight

Champion in three weight classes, tough as old leather with two fisted power and supremely skilled defensive movement, Tony Canzoneri was as close to the ideal boxer as one could get.

Canzoneri was born in Slidell, Louisiana but moved up north to Staten Island in his youth. He started boxing at 11, and won his first professional bout five years later, albeit, by fibbing about his age. From there, Canzoneri's career took off, winning thirty one fights in a row and becoming a mainstay in the NYC boxing scene. He won the Featherweight title in 1928, and two years later, added the Lightweight title to his resume. Amazingly enough, two more years on, Canzoneri won the Light Welterweight title by defeating Jack "Kid" Berg.

Canzoneri did not rest on his laurels going forward, fighting such greats as Lou Ambers, Kid Chocolate and Jimmy McLarnin, defeating the latter in their first meeting under trying circumstances. A Madison Square Garden microphone was lowered too far from the ceiling before the fight, and Canzoneri collided with it on his way to his corner, suffering a contusion. He was undeterred, and went on to win the fight.
