Children, school and learning

Description
Version 1.7.7.7

Description:

Requires HugsLib for 1.5 and below

Load order
// HugsLib
// Children, school and learning

// Birds&Bees (if used - has more fertility related stuff etc.)

There is now a version of the mod with only the school and learniing parts:

Children are born 0 years old with Biotech and 7 years old without it [configurable].
- This mod does not claim realism, I just liked the way this was implemented in the old game 'Diggles: The Myth of Fenris'
- Pregnancy functions the same as with animals [chance configurable]. The looks of the child are based on the parents (Partially for AlienRaces)
- Children 'inherit' skills from the parents [configurable], but have random passions and traits
- Birth control 'drug' can be crafted and given a schedule (needs a newly created drug policy in running game to show up, one pill lasts 5 days, can be added with 'Prepare Carefully' under medical, bought or produced with 'Drug production' and 'Medicine production' research in the 'Drug Lab' like medicine)
- Children are born after 45 days(15 days early-stage (not visible, but chance to vomit) / 15 days middle-stage / 15 days late-stage) (these are unchanged base-game values! There is now an option to modify this without having to change the base game or mod files)
- Artificial pregnancy through a medical operation (if the colonist has a partner/lover they are used, but it is also possible to have a pregnancy without a partner) (two female partners or an unfertile father can have a child through this) Needs better than herbal medicine
- Discover pregnancy operation - pregnancy is normally not visible for the first third of its duration (base game behavior, but can now also be disabled in the options for colonists)
- Remove pregnancy operation

Includes a blackboard and school-table where skilled pawns can teach different subjects.
- There is now a new schedule-tab for each blackboard and school-table
- Rooms now also influence XP learned with items relevant to each subject
(teacher and room factors can be seen in the new schedule-tab)

- Students can learn 1 year until they are 16 [configurable]
- Teachers should have the intellectual skill at a decent level (3-5 or higher, otherwise they teach less) + a high level in the tought subject (around 7 for most, probably needs balancing)
- You can set up certain times in which school activities get higher priority over the normal work

Materials needed to study:
- Cooking: Most raw food
- Medicine: All medicine (default: 1 herbal)
- Mining: Stone blocks or steel (default: 1 steel)
- Contruction: 1 wood log
- Tailoring: 1 (most textiles/leathers)
- Crafting: 1 wood log
- Growing: Raw plant matter / food
- Others: Nothing
(See also Si-Cafe's patch to remove these below)

Can be added to a running game / save!
Removing the mod:
With the game and save loaded, go to the bottom of the mod-options for this mod and click 'remove the mod'
If you have removed the mod by accident and are stuck with a black/grey screen after loading - there is an experimental option to try to fix the map (will loose defined areas [like home, roof etc.] enable 'Try to fix map' at the bottom of the mod-options before loading the save - after that you can properly remove the mod)

The settings are in:
'HugsLib\ModSettings.xml' up until 1.6

Mods that have advanced interactions with this mod:

- Si-Cafe:

- Capi:

Interesting mods:
(Optional)

- Gain skill passions
Enables dynamic changing passions (may also be helpful when having passion issues)

Mod compatibility (see the discussion/thread below):
- "GiddyUp!": Using mounts to ride to school will currently not work when the mount is not within the school-zone already! (Colonists may stand still [in shock ;D] until school is over) You have to set the school-zone/area as forbidden for riding in GiddyUp! for it to work. You can also set a drop-spot outside the zone.

- "Common Sense" might have issues with the SchoolZone that you can define (they might stay in it forever if the mod is active)

Thanks for keeping the download up to date!

Some things changed/improved with the recent update (like the schedule), but a mostly up to date and nice overview

Always make sure you actually have the latest version in the ingame mod-list, lately the workshop is sometimes weird.. (unsub/re-sub helps)

if I shouldn't be able to update my mods in the future, feel free to create a new version or re-use parts of it)

Is there a mod that adds babies at 0 years old that interacts with this mod in 1.6 like the old Babies & Children?
Dylan  [author] Sep 25 @ 11:40am
I just updated the mod:

Version 1.7.7.7 (Changes for Rimworld 1.5 and 1.6+)

- (Both) Fix: Fertility was not always shown correctly with Biotech and CSL
- (Both) Fix: Textbooks should now up correctly when the classroom bonus is calculated

- (1.6) new option: "Try to block other births (Biotech, experimental)" (in the "Birth"-category) to try extra hard to block other birth during a CSL birth (preventing multiple / duplicate children)

@Moruba - No problem, let me know if the option does change anything if you turn it on. If it does not change anything I can still try to block it earlier/later.
(If it does not work it would help if you turn on "Always show child species dialog" and see if the extra child already exists when the dialog shows up, or if it appears after that.)

I'm truly grateful for your kindness! I'm sorry I can't fully express my gratitude because I'm using a translator since my English isn't good. Thank you so much again.:steamhappy:

@Moruba - I will try to see if I can add another option with the next update that maybe blocks the basegame even harder from spawning anything from the pregnancy during the birth, so keep those saves around, maybe you can test if it helps.

It seems like it's just an issue with my game environment. I haven't seen any pregnancy or birth-related error logs, but since I'm using a lot of mods, it seems like a bug is occurring somewhere. Sorry for bothering you... Thank you so much for your reply. I hope you have a great day.

I can tell you they weren't twins. One was born with trait inheritance, skill inheritance, and passions from your mod system, but the other had traits, skills, and passions from the biotech system (everything at 0, with random traits). I tested this dozens of times by loading saves while toggling settings on and off, and what I described initially always happened.
The very first case I tested was before using your mod, when pregnancy occurred via the biotech system (I saved during childbirth and then applied your mod). So I finished that test for now and continued playing with your mod applied. Another couple got pregnant and gave birth, and it was still the same case.
I've now started a new game. Unlike the first and second cases, both couples giving birth were Baseliner, yet the same symptoms still occurred. The previous cases involved HAR species and Baseliner couples. (For detail, the first was Miho species and the second was Ratkin gene species.)

@Moruba - If you have the settings at default (X for the first settings) it should just be from CSL (are you sure they are from both and not just twins? could you load a save and see what happens at birth again? You could also turn on "Always show child species dialog" under "Birth" that way you could choose some HAR species or maybe "Ghoul" as the CSL children should have that species then and if there is another child without it there really is a bug) (it could be another mod of course)

I was using your mod right after checking for updates, but it seems like I can't override the Biotech pregnancy feature with your mod's pregnancy feature?
When I turned off the first and second settings in your mod, both the Biotech version baby and your mod version baby were born at the same time.
When I turn both settings on, the Biotech version baby is born. I just want to override the Biotech pregnancy function with your mod's function, but is that impossible?
I remember it worked in version 1.5, but I don't know if that function is blocked in this version or if I'm setting it up wrong. Please help me...T-T

A lot of people had asked for a mod with only the school part from "Children, school and learning", especially since Biotech added children.

While going through the code to remove the HugsLib dependecy I cleaned it up enough to shrink down the work of extracting only the school-part. (It should be exactly the same as the current CSL-version: "1.7.7.6")
