Description
Era - 1890s / 1900s - Boxing - Lightweight

A sawed off Hercules at 5'1, the original Joe Walcott hailed from British Guyana, by way of Barbados. Considered by many boxing historians to be in the discussion for the best Welterweight of all time, Walcott fearlessly took on opponents all the way up to Heavyweight, and amazingly managed to retain his knockout power all the way up.

Walcott's resume included fights against legendary opponents such as Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Joe Gans, a long series against Mysterious Billy Smith, Sam Langford and a KO victory over Heavyweight hall of famer Joe Choynski.

Barbados Joe would have a long run with the Welterweight title, winning the belt in 1901 from Rube Ferns, and would keep it until 1906 in a bout against Honey Mellody. However, Walcott's latter career was affected by a firearm accident, in which he shot himself in the right hand, severely injuring the appendage, and was never quite the same again.
