Introduction
In addition to the standard options, Team Fortress 2 has a set of Advanced Options which can be used to enhance your game play. This guide will give you additional information about what each option does, and how they work when they're enabled.

Accessing the Advanced Options
The Advanced Options menu can be accessed at any time from the Main Menu of Team Fortress 2. It is located at the bottom right and it's labelled Adv. Options.

Each option is categorized and they are in the form of drop down menus and check boxes. Hovering over each option will give you a brief description of what it does.

Clicking on Ok will save your preferences.
Combat Options
This section will cover the Combat Options category under the Advanced Options menu.

  • Automatically Reload Weapons When You're Not Firing

If this option is checked you'll automatically reload your weapon if you're not firing if you have enough ammo to reload it.

  • Fast Weapon Switch

If this option is checked you can change weapons without using the weapon selection menu.

  • Play a Hit Sound Everytime You Injure an Enemy

If this option is you checked you'll hear a pinging noise every time you damage an enemy. This is only audible to yourself.

  • Display Damage Done As Text Over Your Target

Having this option checked will display a scrolling combat text above enemy players heads every time you damage them. The number indicates how much damage you've done and it's only visible to yourself.

  • Remember the Active Weapon Between Lives

This option will make the game remember your active weapon every time you die. For example, if you die with the medigun pulled out, you will respawn with it pulled out.

  • Remember the Previous Weapon Between Lives

If you have this option checked it will remember the previous weapon you had selected between lives. If you quick switch weapons using the Last Used Weapon bind, it will remember your selections prior to death.

  • Play a Sound When The Sniper Rifle is Fully Charged

If this setting is turned on, the game will make a pinging sound every time the Sniper Rifle reaches a full charge. This sound is only audible to yourself.

Class Specific Options
This section will cover the Class Options category under the Advanced Options menu.

  • Spy: Enable Concise Disguise Menu

The concise spy menu lets you make selections using fewer buttons by categorizing classes. The standard menu utilizes nine different keys, while the concise menu uses only three.

  • Sniper: Sniper Rifle Will Re-Zoom After Firing a Zoomed Shot

Enabling this option will make your Sniper Rifle instantly re-zoom after you've fired it. This only applies if you were using the scope.

  • Sniper: Hide Crosshair When Zoomed In

Enabling this option will hide the unscoped crosshair when you zoom in. The screenshots below provide an example of what this option looks like whilst it is on and off.

  • Medic: Medigun Continues Healing Without Holding Down the Fire Button

With this setting turned on you'll be able to click your fire button once to continuously heal somebody if they are within range. Looking away from the person and clicking the fire button again will stop the Medigun from healing them.

  • Medic: Display a Marker Over The Player You Are Healing

If you have this turned on it will display an arrow sign over the top of the head of the player that you're healing. This is only visible to yourself.

  • Medic: Injured Teammates Automatically Call Out

This setting causes team mates to automatically call out for medic assistance once their health reaches a certain threshold. You're able to specify the threshold using the percentage bar.

HUD Options
This section will cover the HUD Options category under the Advanced Options menu.

  • Enable Minimal HUD

This setting will enable the Minimal HUD. The Minimal HUD is a scaled down version of the default HUD and shows less information in certain parts. This is designed for experienced players.

When you're spectating a player, the default HUD shows tips and spectator controls. If you use the minimal HUD it hides this information.

  • Turn On Colorblind Mode

Enabling Colorblind mode will display alternative effects which are easier for people who are colorblind to see. For example, when a player is under the effect of Jarate, it will display an icon above the players head.

  • Use Advanced Spectator HUD In Tournament Mode

If the server you're playing on is using Tournament Mode, enabling this option will allow you to see the Advanced Spectator HUD. If you're on the spectator team you'll be able to see the current health pool of every player in the game, and you'll also be able to see how close medics are to their Ubercharge along the top of the screen. This setting is typically used for competitive game casting.

  • Show Non-Standard Items On Spectated Players

If this setting is turned on it will display a tooltip with the item the player you're spectating currently has equipped.

  • Use Glow Effect For Payload Objectives

This option will display an outline around the map objective. The outline is visible through walls so you're able to easily track its whereabouts.

  • Viewmodel Field of View

Adjusting the Field of View will increase and decrease how much of your screen your weapon takes up. Below is an example of the Field of View at it's minimum setting, 54.00, versus it's maximum setting, 70.00.

  • Hide HUD During Freeze Cam Screenshots

By default, taking a Freeze Cam screenshot when you die will display the name of the player and the weapon they killed you with. Enabling this option will hide both.

  • When Spectating, View World From The Eyes of a Pyro

If this option is enabled you'll be switched to Pyrovision whenever you're spectating.

  • Pyrovision Settings

There are three different settings which allow you adjust the default look of Pyrovision. There are settings which adjust the border and the skybox depth of field.

  • Use player model in player class HUD

This will enable a 3D player model next to your health on the HUD. It will display the weapon you have equipped as well as any cosmetic items your character is currently wearing.

  • Enable Romevision when available

If enabled, you'll see Romevision in Mann vs. Machine mode if a player has The Hardy Laurel in their backpack.

Performance Options
This section will cover the Performance Options category under the Advanced Options menu.

  • Disable Weather Effects

Certain maps may have particle effects classified as 'weather' by the creator. Turning this setting on will disable them.

  • Disable HTML MOTDs

When you initially join a server you will be greeted by the Message of the Day. Disabling HTML MOTDs will block any third party websites or HTML code from loading in the MOTD window. This is useful for disabling things such as in-game advertisements.

  • Multiplayer Decal Limit

Visual effects such as bullet impacts and player sprays are considered as decals. Adjusting the value of this will determine how many of these can exist at once. Increasing this value will allow more decals, but it will sacrifice some performance on lower end machines. The highest value this setting can go is 4096.000000.
Miscellaneous Options
This section will cover the Miscellaneous Options under the Advanced Options menu.

  • Auto-Save a Scoreboard Screenshot at the End of the Map

Whenever the current map timer ends the game will automatically save a screenshot of the scoreboard. This will be saved to your screenshot manager on Steam. To access the Screenshot from the Steam Client click on the button labeled View and then select Screenshots.

  • Suicide After Choosing a Player Class

If this is enabled you'll suicide if you change your class outside of the spawn room.

  • Automatically Respawn After Loadout Changes in Respawn Zones

If this setting is enabled you will automatically respawn if you're in the respawn zone if you make a loadout change.

  • Draw Viewmodels

Turning off Draw Viewmodels will hide your first person weapon model. You'll see nothing but the crosshair if this is turned off. This is only visible to yourself, and everybody else in the map will still see you holding a weapon.

  • Flip Viewmodels

If this option is checked it will display your first person viewmodel on the left side of the screen. To enable this you'll need to be on the Main Menu of Team Fortress 2, and not connected to a server. The position your character holds their weapon to everybody else will not change.

  • Disable Sprays

This setting will completely disable user created spray images. Other players will still see them, but they will be invisible to you.

  • Close the Server Browser After Connecting to a Server

If this option is enabled the server browser will automatically close once you've connect to a server.

  • Synchronize with the Steam Cloud

Enabling this will save your TF2 configuration such as key bindings to the cloud. This is useful if you play on multiple computers. It will synchronize when you first load the game and when you exit it.

  • Save Screenshots to Steam

Enabling this will save your screenshots to your Steam Screenshot Manager. If this is not turned on you can find your screenshots in your TF2 folder

    Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\screenshots

  • Show Popup Alerts While In Game

Turning this option on will allow you to see in-game notifications if somebody sends you a trade request. If you turn it off you'll only see trade requests when you return to the main menu of Team Fortress 2.

  • Show Trade Requests From

This setting will adjust who you're able to see trade requests from. If the person requesting a trade does not meet your set requirements, you will automatically decline the request.

I know it's a little too late for a question:
Can you always have Advanced Spectator HUD on even when not spectating? Or at least when not spectating a tournament?
