Description
Era - 1920 / 1930s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Having fought both, Jack Sharkey bridged the gap between Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis in Heavyweight history. Born as Joseph Zukauskas, the name Jack Sharkey came about as a combination of Jack Dempsey and Sailor Tom Sharkey's combined. Sharkey took up boxing while in the United States Navy at the end of World War 1, and quickly rose up the ranks in the Heavyweight division upon his return home.

Sharkey would earn an important win over the dangerous Harry Wills in 1926, and challenged Dempsey in the next year, outboxing him, but losing when a punch landed below his waistline, prompting a complaint to the referee. For his part, Dempsey answered with a knockout left hook while Sharkey tried to protest.

Sharkey would continue to press on, with a big money fight against Young Stribling, a victory over Tommy Laughran and a dubious loss to Max Schmeling in a fight for the vacated World title, losing by disqualification, the first time for such an occurance in the modern gloved era of the sport.

Following a victory over the gargantuan Primo Carnera, Sharkey would earn a title fight against Schmeling in 1932, winning a close decision this time around, before losing to Carnera in their rematch. A loss to Joe Louis would take place in 1936.

Sharkey was a skilled boxer, consistently fighting top opponents through his eventful career, even if he didn't always fight to the best of his potential.
