Its only due to over hunting and the desemation of the animal spieces during later periods (Due to human population groath) that spieces such as the African Elephant became extinct in the northen/ north eastern regions and confined to lesser civilized regions ie Africa. So in antient Persia as well as Medieval Persia African elephants were incroporated into their armies and were actually favoured above the Eastern elephants due to their larger,stronger build and agressive behaviour.
