On the May 23 episode of SmackDown, Corbin was announced as a participant in the 2017 Money in the Bank Ladder match at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, where he won the match and the Money in the Bank briefcase on June 18. On the June 27 episode of SmackDown, Corbin defeated Zayn to end their feud. Corbin began a feud with Shinsuke Nakamura, who he attacked before the Money in the Bank Ladder match. At Battleground, Corbin lost to Nakamura by disqualification after attacking him with a low blow. On the following episode of SmackDown, Nakamura defeated Corbin in a rematch. After August 1 edition of SmackDown, after Nakamura defeated Cena to become the #1 contender for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, Corbin attacked Nakamura, only to be attacked by John Cena, who executed an Attitude Adjustment on Corbin through an announce table. It was announced the following week by SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan that Corbin will face Cena at SummerSlam. Corbin cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on the August 15 edition of SmackDown, but quickly lost to Jinder Mahal after attacking Cena instead, thus becoming the third person to unsuccessfully cash in the Money in the Bank contract and the second person after Damien Sandow to lose a cash-in outright. Corbin was then beaten by Cena at SummerSlam.

On the August 22 episode of SmackDown, Corbin was approached by Kevin Owens to officiate the United States Championship match later in the night between himself and the current champion, AJ Styles, with the promise of a future Championship match if Owens is to win the match. Corbin would abandon the match towards the end after heavy criticism from Shane McMahon, giving the officiating duty to him instead. The following week, Corbin would attack Tye Dillinger, who answered Styles' challenge for the title. The next week, Corbin defeated Tye Dillinger with Styles was on commentary. On the 19 September episode of SmackDown Live, before a scheduled title match against Styles, Corbin attacked Styles, resulting in Dillinger attacking Corbin. Styles applied the Calf Crusher Submission on Corbin, forcing him to submit. Corbin defeated Dillinger on the 26 September episode of SmackDown Live via countout after throwing Dillinger into Styles. Corbin then challenged Styles to a match at Hell in a Cell, which Styles would later accept. Corbin subsequently lost to Dillinger the following week on SmackDown. At Hell in a Cell, Dillinger was added to the match to make it a Triple Threat; Corbin defeated Dillinger and Styles to win the title. On the following episode of SmackDown, Corbin defeated Styles to retain the United States Championship. On the October 17 edition of SmackDown Live, Corbin was defeated by the returning Sin Cara via countout. On the October 23 edition of Raw, Corbin was a part of the Smackdown roster that invaded Raw. On the October 24 episode of SmackDown, he faced Sin Cara in a rematch, losing by disqualification. Corbin would face Sin Cara again the following week, with the match ending in a no-contest. Corbin retained the title against Sin Cara on the November 14th episode of Smackdown Live, ending his feud with Cara. At Survivor Series, he defeated Intercontinental Champion The Miz in an interbrand Champion vs Champion match. At Clash of Champions, Corbin lost the US Title to Dolph Ziggler in a triple threat match also involving Bobby Roode ending his reign at 70 days. Corbin then entered at number 4 in the annual Royal Rumble match at the namesake pay-per-view but failed to win the match after being eliminated by Finn Bálor. After being eliminated, Corbin attacked Balor, Rusev, and Heath Slater.

On February 13th edition of SmackDown, Corbin was originally scheduled to face Dolph Ziggler to determine who will be added to the WWE Championship match at Fastlane. However, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn attacked Corbin backstage before the match, showing signs of a face turn. After the attack, SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon announced that Corbin would face Owens in a singles match that same night, with the stipulation being if Corbin wins he’s added to the WWE Championship match at Fastlane. Corbin would defeat Owens, making the championship match a Fatal 4-Way. Later that same night, Ziggler would defeat Sami Zayn, officially making the championship match at Fastlane a Fatal 5-Way. On the February 20 edition of SmackDown LIVE, Corbin was defeated by AJ Styles, and after the match, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn attacked Styles & Corbin fought off Zayn & Owens, turning face in the process for the first time since his NXT debut. On the February 27 edition of SmackDown LIVE, Baron Corbin defeated Sami Zayn, but after the match, Dolph Ziggler hit him with a Zig Zag. On the last SmackDown! LIVE before WWE Fastlane Corbin competed in a Fatal-5-way match with other competitors were AJ Styles, Dolph Ziggler, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, who was victorious in the bout.
