Short and sweet. The game is frequently overwritten (the breakfast scene, for one, is intensely exposition heavy in a way that took me out of it), but its moments of brilliance leave me excited for its developers’ outing. Fishing after two devastating phone calls, watching the reflections of autumn tinged trees rippling in the water. The greyed out dialogue options continuing out of the frame, telling us so much more than the dialogue itself. When the script steps back and lets itself breathe the game is great. I just wonder if its author didn’t trust it to convey all of its messages without some heavy-handedness. Will definitely check out doc’s next!

The game is fine, good even, but wow is it completely unacceptable that this still costs $40 after over a decade (same goes for BO2 and BO3, if not more. $60 for a game from 2012? Seriously?) ♥♥♥♥ Activision

This game is drenched in a thick, depressing atmosphere that's quickly destroyed by its trial-and-error set pieces and gameplay. There were so many moments where I knew exactly what to do but had to replay a section a number of times because if the incredibly imprecise controls. The tension's completely ruined after the first death in any section, and most of the enemies aren't even really that scary to begin with. I think horror design deserves better than "oooh make them really fat and gross." (Although the Lady and the Janitor are pretty freaky)

This is one of the best games I've ever played. Pretty much every moment of it is pure joy and discovery. Play this game.

I haven't played that much of the game since it runs horribly on my pc, but I can't recommend it because of CDPR's awful practices. They crunched devs for months after saying they wouldn't to release an unfinished game. They knew it wasn't done, so they hid footage and didn't let reviewers access the console version of the game. They also straight-up lied about features in the game like the bounty system. This is really unacceptable.

This is the best game I've ever played. It's insanely well written, the art is beautiful, the voice acting is great--it's perfect.

This game, despite its flaws in both design and narrative, is greater than the sum of its parts. At times difficult to the point of unfairness, Hotline Miami 2 evokes an emotional reaction I haven't seen from many other games. It's often frustrating to the point of tedium, but every now and then all of its facets combine into an audiovisual experience like no other. The final level (if you can call it that) and the ending of the game are truly incredible. It's short and cheap, so definitely a recommend.
