Middle-earth: Shadow of War

A lot of the criticism this game recieves derives from the lootbox system implemented by WB; however, it is not a necessary part of the game and won't inhibit your experience of it.

Positives
  • Interesting story line - It isn't exactly Tolkien law abiding, but it expands upon the universe and focuses on the niche things (such as orc hierachy)
  • Nemesis system - This is second to none, the variety of encounters I have been in and the opportunity of creating individualised story lines is highly engaging
  • Characters - Some of the voice lines are...odd, but it evokes the wild atmosphere of being within mordor and creates humour during tense combat scenarios
  • Combat - Most people can relate to that moment when you want to freeze your nemesis but accidentally turn your beloved minion into a Narnian statue. Aside from the occasional targetting issues, the combat is overall very fun and allows for variation during fights (thanks to nemesis weaknesses and strengths)
Negatives
  • Bugs - There are some minor bugs still present, but the recent DLC update showed that Monolith are in the process of fixing those

Overall, this game is very enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it.

To summarise: this DLC is good if you enjoy testing builds (like me) or are playing the game for fun and don't mind costs. However for the average player, unless you really enjoy the character and voice lines, then it's not worth it.

Pros:
  • The character is fun to play, especially if you enjoy hearing new voice lines
  • The kingpin perk deck is a good clutch if you often find yourself dying quickly
  • The kingpin deck can also 'somewhat' be used to tank damage
  • The little friend has good utility and is something new
  • The chainsaw makes you look like a bad*ss
  • Masks as per usual
Cons:
  • Personally I found the voice lines less entertaining (purely personal preference) compared to other character DLCs
  • The kingpin perk deck could be really good - but it gets let down when the invincibility ends. I wanted it to be a tank-like perk deck, but instead it feels like too much of a clutch, since on mayhem+ after the injector ends, the ai targetting mechanic that comes with the perk deck usually results in you losing a big chunk of health
  • Tasers - I would recommend getting the skill with this build since they are pretty much the bane of kingpin. Even though you might think they're all dead, sooner or later one will spawn and leave you susceptible to the ai targetting you
  • The little friend is only good as a single-shot assault rifle, since the ammo capacity and lack of mods means you could easily waste most of your time shooting enemies, with very little impact and lacking ammo
  • At first it seems the little friend gives you a lot of utility, but in-depth it feels like a hinderence. I would rather bring along a grenade launcher than switch between the firing/grenade launcher modes since the single mag size and reload time make it quite underpowered
  • Finally the chainsaw I find is too large (sounds odd) but it covers a lot of your peripheral vision, making you vulnerable

The perk deck and weapons from this DLC can be very fun to use, but at higher levels become less practical. If these things were slightly tweeked then I would definitely recommend it. Ultimately if you don't want to get all the DLCs, then this one can be missed since as it isn't a necessity. All the same I have enjoyed playing around with it.

Would I recommend Grand Theft Auto V: Yes - well made game.
Would I recommend Grand Theft Auto Online: No - here's why:

I logged on earlier today only to find I have been permanently banned (ironically I was looking at the recent reviews moments beforehand and wondering what they were talking about). Now I myself have fallen victim to a ridiculous fault in the game itself.

Did I break the rules? No
Was I given a reason/date/any information? No
Could I appeal? No

When I tried to appeal, not once but twice, I received an automated response (under new regulations) that I could not appeal from a ban.

Advice: If you planning on buying this game for singeplayer, go ahead. If you were planning to delve into GTA online...don't. If you do, all I can advise is: to play in friendly lobbies, don't record your gameplay, make sure your internet is 100% stable, never play missions with random people or do anything publically.

As you can see this is very limiting, but any one of these reasons could have gotten me banned. Rockstar has the worst anti-cheat system I have ever seen and I did not expect to buy the game and be unable to play it after spending around 500 hours on it (which makes it all the more bitter). It is honestly such a shame that they had to ruin a fun game, fortunately there are other games that will not disappoint you as much as this one.
