This is a no spoiler review. I Heard good things about the game around when it was released but didn't play it. 6 months ago I started to listen to the game soundtrack and fell in love with it. A month ago I started playing the game and recently finished it. Now when I listen to the soundtrack, it's hard not to cry. This game is a gut-wrenchingly sad but beautiful tale that has left me to spend a good deal of time putting the pieces together, contemplating what the intended message of the story actually is. It's by now means a perfect game, and many of the "flaws" are a matter of taste or opinion, but if you enjoy the opening act, chances are you'll enjoy the entirety of the game.

For me, the soundtrack alone would have made the game worth playing. I listen to a lot of music variety and the score from this game is very close to the top of anything I've heard.

The movement and fighting mechanics feel very good but I think they are under-utilized. Given that the game has 4 difficulty levels, the majority of fighting mechanics feel superfluous and entirely unnecessary, though I only played the game on level 2 (normal). Mostly it comes down to whether you can evade/jump at the correct time to dodge attacks and how quickly you can button mash the same 3 basic attacks to hack through enemies. I enjoyed the fighting mechanics, but I don't see myself going back and repeating the game at a higher difficulty level.

The side content is interesting and often tries to hide some deeper meaning within, but is mostly unnecessary to the overall game. That's the curse of open-world style games, I guess. Most side quests have some amusing/charming elements to them, but sometimes they just feel like a slog and weren't very well polished. It sort of feels like the director focused his attention on the main quest and let the interns work on the side-quests, only ensuring that the writing agreed with the overall plot of the game. In other words, they are hit-or-miss.

The main factor that makes this game a massive hit is the plot and storytelling of the main quest line. It takes the ideas of many Western philosophers and presents them in a way that is emotional and entertaining. It tries to make you think about life. And death. And this is where you will either love or hate this game. I'm not even sure there is an in-between. The opening act should determine whether it's a game you'll enjoy. Obviously I loved it, and will be returning to play some of the director's other games...

I don't really consider myself a gamer, but I like to play this game once in a while. The only downside is that the profanity filter doesn't really work that well. Half the messages you get from your teammate are censored so you don't know if they are being toxic or if they accidentally triggered the filter with the way they worded their message. Because of this, I recommend using voice chat when you play with your buddies online.

The atmosphere of this game is incredible. It's just as much a philosophical debate as it is a game, and the presentation is engaging while leaving you wrestling with your own views and beliefs. Having played through it multiple times, it's like a distant dream that feels both familiar and novel when I return to it.

A beautiful, fun to play, and incredibly well-done game. It's something you play for an hour or two here and there to feel powerful while still being challenged to learn at least some basic game mechanics in order to progress. Each opponent has nuanced strengths and weaknesses, and part of the fun is learning how to optimally kill those opponents. It's really a game about resource management. You have health, ammo, map position, and time to work with and must use each one thoughtfully to be successful. At lower difficulty levels you can be quite sloppy but still need to move around and kill opponents quickly to avoid being overwhelmed. I had a blast playing this and am looking forward to playing the sequel.

The biggest downside to this game was that on certain levels it was easy to get lost. Missing one body that had the keycard you need could leave you scouring the map for 20 minutes looking for that detail you missed before you can progress. It kind of grinds the otherwise constant action to a halt. My first attempted playthrough of the game was canceled because I couldn't figure out how to progress, but it does get better as you figure out the progression structure.
