Alright so this game looks like ♥♥♥♥, runs like ♥♥♥♥, has constant problems, is arguably unfinished and the only way to fix a lot of game and save breaking bugs is to reset the entire game world via importing.

However this is probably the best game I've played all year.

Kenshi plays like an old school squad based RPG, like the original Fallout games or Wasteland. You control a variable amount of characters based on your start, who you recruit, etc... in a strange planet sunk into a technological dark age with a culture that resembles feudal japan, with soldiers wearing ninja or samurai armor and fighting with katanas and traditional japanese medieval weapons.

The world is vast, and very dangerous, early on your characters are weak and incapable of fighting, that's where the skill system comes into play: each character has an extensive and complex skill potential, which include combat skills, thievery skills, crafting skills and farming skills. Early on you will be roaming the world getting beaten up by everyone, probably enslaved or eaten alive, but fear not, each time you go down you train your toughness, and the eventual objective of the game is to conquer the world with a group (or even a single person) of highly experienced fighters, capable of taking on 10-15 enemies alone.

The combat system is automatic, characters take turns swinging and defending against enemies, and combat results depend mainly on combat skills.

There is basebuilding and crafting, and they have depth and complexity, however I personally can't stand the grind of basebuilding.

There's a lot of locales to visit, tons of enemies to fight, lots and lots of weapons and armor to collect, unique recruits and unique enemy bosses to take down, ruins of ancient civilizations to explore, you can even take out entire cities and factions at one point.

It's a rough game, development wise, but it's a highly endorsed recommendation by me.

Pixel art high octane action roguelite.

Do not expect a compelling story, the story is almost non-existent and the writing is atrocious. Crappy puns do not make a good boss introduction, and having every item be a reference to some dead meme or some popular culture item makes the game look generic and low effort. Artstyle is done to death too.

Music is amazing, but due to the low amount of overall content, there's also few musical tracks.

The forte of the game is, of course, the combat system. Flashy spells flinging all over the screen while you dash left and right dodging every enemy's projectiles and counterattacking with your whole arsenal is very compelling BUT don't be fooled, the game is not very hard.

The game is divided into 10 total stages, 2 for each major boss, 3 boss arenas and a final boss battle. The difficulty resides in surviving all the 9 stages prior to the final boss and defeat the boss on top of that, the problem is that while it might be daunting the first time, after a few playthroughs you figure out the bosses and enemies and the game becomes trivial to beat.

The biggest problem I have is that bosses have a "taunt" phase in which they literally sit still waiting for you to hit them, and if you hit them with anything they become stunned for 3 seconds, enough for you to unleash your full combo and dealing about 1/4th of their HP in damage, not only that, the damage they deal to you is laughable.

After collecting all arcanas and relics, there isn't much more content in the game.

However, I believe much more content is planned, and for what it costs, the experience you get right now is completely worth it.

I've played a variety of 4X games and I can say, undoubdelty, this is the ONE for me.

I like Civ, don't get me wrong, Civ is a pretty amazing game, but it was way too focused on nation interrelations, diplomacy and "player versus player" experience, as in, you'll be battling and dealing with the big AI (the other players in the game) rather than the environment AI (in the case of civ, barbarians)

I also played Fallen Enchantress, but the art didn't quite charm me.

This game combines what I loved from FE (exploration, variety of AI enemies, more "player versus environment" focused) with an incredibly beautiful artstyle, amazing soundtrack and a much more fleshed out singleplayer campaign. Highly recommended for any fan of strategy games, be it 4X, grand or tactics.

Gameplay is nothing special, the forte is in the ambience, the music, the lore and overall its artistic value.

Other zombie games out there are either:

1. Completely broken (The WarZ, DayZ) and unplayable

2. Way too hardcore and punishing, not for having fun, and only multiplayer (Project Zomboid, Rust, DayZ, Left 4 Dead series, etc...)

3. Lacking all kinds of features that make it a fully fledged open world survival game (all of the aforementioned)

This game not only is immersive (singleplayer only) is playable and doesn't have many bugs, and gives you the "fun" factor that is missing in all of the other zombie games, you get to actually experience killing zombies without dying in 2 hits or being killed by another player for the lulz. Permadeath is a thing in this game, but you will barely experience it.

Some people will not like it to not be very challenging, thus the DLC came with, enhanced difficulty and other options.

All in all, a very fun open world survival game that deserves your time.

Early Access Review
Despite the sheer amount of publicity this game receives by part of Dean Hall (Rocket, developer of DayZ), it isn't great, at least not yet. This game plays like the sims (the original Sims 1), but instead you are in a zombie apocalypse setting. Your character is not immune to the virus and the most common reason of death is zombification. You play on a very realistic 2.5D world in which you try to survive by gathering food, defending yourself with weapons and building barricades, and eventually trying to survive as long as you can without electricity and water, by planting crops for food and relying on rain catching barrels for water.

As an Early Access game, it has a big amount of problems, and a lot of promised lacking features, including cars, NPCs and more weapons.

Game has been in alpha for over 2 years, and it's not advancing very quickly, I would hold off buying it for at least 3 more years.
