I ignored the videogamedunkey fanboys and gave this game a try on its own merit rather than because a funny YouTuber published it. I'm glad I did because this game does a lot of things I like:

  • I love Metroidvanias, and ANIMAL WELL is uniquely creative with its progression items and their uses.
  • I love puzzles and exploration, and this game has LAYERS of puzzles. Seriously.
  • I love animals, and ANIMAL WELL is themed around them.
  • In a time where most games take up to 100 GB of disk space and motherboards have limited M.2 slots, ANIMAL WELL's 33 MB (yes, megabytes) is a really welcome sight.

A handful of puzzles and platforming sections were a little annoying, but that's to be expected. Of these, most get easier with a different approach, and the rest won't take you too many tries either way. You probably already know whether this is the type of game you'll like, but if you're on the fence, give it a try.

Helldivers 2 is great, but between the steep skill curve, devs adding more premium stuff instead of fixing bugs or improving game balance, and the new PSN requirement (why can they even do that after the fact?), I can't recommend this game anymore.

Some people are complaining about the price and the only thing I can say is this:

I have 50 hours in this game, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of the core game, never mind the two DLCs I own (out of four, at the time of writing this).

If this isn't value for money, I don't know what is.

RimWorld is an amazing colony sim/sandbox game and you are doing yourself a disservice by letting that be the reason to not at least get the base game. The DLCs don't just add content, they enable entirely new playstyles, and if that isn't enough for you, there are tons of great mods available with native mod support.

Feels like they wanted to take the best of Path of Exile and Diablo but ends up not doing either direction very well. The characters and skills I've tried feel like they have zero impact, like I'm doing nothing, and there's not enough complexity to keep it interesting regardless. Leveling feels slow, even more so when you want to respec. Just play Diablo or PoE instead.

I've tried my best to enjoy this game, but I just can't. The characters seem interesting, the environment is incredibly detailed, and the quests are interesting. Character creation is extensive, and your choice of species and class affects the dialogue.

The combat encounters, however, feel like you're playing D&D with a GM that hates you. And you can't soften the blow with (online) multiplayer. It's extremely easy to accidentally attack the same target twice and effectively waste your action. If your initiative rolls don't line up, the other player can spend a long time waiting.

Multiplayer in general feels like an afterthought. You can 'eavesdrop' on other players' conversations, but you can't actively participate in it. For example, if you're playing a sorcerer and something requires a Strength check, you can't "ask" another player or character to do it for you. This is made worse by the fact that a lot of dialogues are forced upon you — sometimes in the middle of combat — and usually with a character you didn't want to.

There was supposed to be an update that improved that, but I haven't noticed a difference. They're still regularly updating the game, but in some respects the game feels less stable than before.

A lot of times when you get hit or die, it feels cheap. The final bosses in particular can kill even the best runs. But I keep coming back to this, so the game must be doing something right.

Detroid: Become Human is really, really good. Amazing story with impactful choices that might actually make you feel things. If you these types of games you already know what you're in for. If you're even remotely curious, you should give it a try.

if you enjoyed the original or if you enjoyed 999 or its sequels, you will probably like this.
