Even more updated review.

The owners of 1047 are idiots. They actually fired developers that made SG2, shut down SG1 servers AND turned SG2 into a beta again. Same playbook as with SG1. Guess what happened back then? That's right, the game flatlined. This is just way too sad and I'mma just say nah don't get this game.

Updated review, old review below.

So after finally being able to play the game and going through various modes and playlists I can finally say it's okay to download and mechanically a very solid shooter. It's literally Halo with portals. Again. Weapons feel fine, aiming feels fine, sliding feels fine. Only thing that really has no reason being there is the BR game mode and splitball is kinda cancer but other than that it's a fine game.

---

>open game for public beta
>servers die

stuck on "SSL" loading screen, can't even play the game after seeing the cringey intro video. well played, devs.

edit:
About 24 hours later, the servers are still down. The developers post updates on Twitter or Discord, but not here for some reason. Apparently the open beta is now closed until they figure out what went wrong.
Imagine this, if you will: a game that suffers from very similar issues as it's predecessor, claiming to be a beta where progress doesn't reset and you can already purchase in-game stuff for real currency. It's a marketing gimmick.

I really want this game to be good, because I loved the premise of SG1 but didn't really love how that game was treated (post-release changes of release dates, drama, cash-cow-milking, being abandoned by the devs) so I was very high up in hopes that SG2 will rectify all of that but alas, it looks like the devs didn't learn anything from the first game.

I'll keep waiting for the servers to return to eventually update this review.

edit2:
About 48 hours later, the developers updated the community that the servers are now available again "in limited capacity". What do you mean I'm "in the login queue"? Is this 2005? I'll keep racking up playtime while idling in a loading screen. Great game.

edit3:
Another day later, the game is in a playable state however the tracking is still broken which is ironic seeing how the developers provide a 2x XP bonus at the moment.
From what I have played so far though the game feels like a hot mess. Teams are getting stacked with bots to meet the player quota, gunplay is okay but nothing to write home about, maps look fun, gamemodes are scrambled into a single playlist.
The worst part though? Way less portal surfaces to use compared to SG1. It's like portals don't even matter anymore and the gameplay proves that; players treat nearly every mode as TDM and barely if ever use portals. Could be that they're just new to the concept or that the overall lack of interesting flanks just removes the desire to use portals at all.
So in the state the game currently is in I still can't recommend the game because it's pretty much just SG1 with updated graphics and less portals.

Just used the revive token of a treammate as a carrier for a breaching charge. 10/10 would abuse fallen comrades again.

Valve should pull this game from the Steam store because as of today, post update, the game is literally unplayable. Some users are able to get into the main menu but most get sent back to desktop after the 343 intro screen. You can't even begin to play the campaign at all right now. And this happens accross multiple platforms as well.

Update as of early April: the game received an update but prior to that I had told the support through 343's ticket system what exactly breaks the game in my case (different and custom keyboard layout) and how to fix this. No acknowledgement, no "thank you". The game is playable again but I'm still not saying you should get this because it's clear that the general appreciation of users is at near zero. Don't give 343 your money. Let this die.

Do you like violence? I like violence. I like strapping homing missile launcher to saw blade ejecting flamethrower shotguns. If you like that too, you need to buy this game.

Very fun game that sadly lacks content. If you're just going to play the game for the story itself, you'll be through with it in under 2 hours. The game offers some new game+ content, as well as challenges to keep the player playing the game, however you'll find yourself revisiting the same levels over and over again.
I know that a level editor was on the dev's kickstarter as a stretch goal which had not been met but I hope they reconsider this decision and make it possible for the community to create their own levels and challenges.
So if you are fine with buying a (as of now) quite expensive game with little content, go ahead as the content that is there actually is quite fun.
If you think 20 bucks is a bit too much for roughly 2 hours of gameplay, don't get the game.

One of the best free-to-play titles currently available in the action and shooter genre. And every update from the devs seems to make the game even more awesome. I think they will continue doing this until no player can handle the awesomeness anymore because it became too epic.
