2026 REVIEW:

For today's review, I go back 15 years ago. The early years of "Train Simulator Classic" (ala "RailWorks 3: Train Simulator 2012") and of course, since the release of DLC, there have been improvements to "Train Simulator Classic" and how developers are really trying to squeeze a lot out of a very old engine and for the most part, seeing impressive creations. While it's sibling, "Train Simulator World" has now poised itself of getting the love and fanfare thanks to easier and forgiving gameplay and magnificent graphics.

With that being said, while TSW is popular for today's graphic loving gamers, "Train Simulator Classic" still is the King. With many DLCs and community support, it's still the world's best train simulator. With that being said, "Train Simulator Classic" as it did in 2009 and to 2026, still remains a wonderful game that is unforgiving, challenging, long and frustrating because you can give your all, but in the end, while you may complete a scenario, doesn't mean you will earn any points.

Before I get to my review, I am a train fan who travels worldwide to ride in trains, collects trains (N-Gage) and is passionate about train simulators and raised on "Densha de Go" and play many train games to this day. But with that being said, I am not the technical train fan who looks for perfection in depiction or sound. While there are some people who are hardcore about that. I am not that type of railfan.

Nor am I going to say, "purchase a weather pack or liveries" from another site. If you have the money to do so and the technical know how to do so, go for it! The beauty of simulators especially for trains and planes, you have that freedom thanks to its supportive community.

Now on to my review.

NORTHEAST CORRIDOR: New York - Philadelphia Route (2011)

When it comes to Dovetail Games original routes, "Northeast Corridor" has been a staple of USA route add-ons worth owning if you want to operate trains on the Northeast, especially Amtrak trains.

Released in 2011 and added on STEAM in 2012, it's one of the routes that you want to own if you want to use the classic, the iconic Amtrak AEM-7. And there have been newer scenarios created and available for purchase since this DLC was released.

Northeast Corridor (NEC) is owned by Amtrak and has major stops in Providence, New Haven, New York City, Newark, Trenton, Philadelphia, Wilmington and Delaware and is the busiest passenger rail line in the USA (ridership and service frequency).

So, if you plan to invest in a DLC covering this area, "Northeast Corridor" is worth owning. But it happens to be old. 2012 old. BUT don't let that hamper your decision of getting this because "Train Simulator Classic" is not "Traini Sim World" (it's better graphical sibling).

While we see companies able to make amazing things with 2009 technology (albeit receiving a 64-bit upgrade in 2019), you are not buying TSC for amazing graphics. You are purchasing a DLC with length, scenery and a fun route.

Also, with this route which you can often find on sale for $4.99-$5.99 (US), it also comes with the iconic Amtrak AEM-7 (there is an updated Pro version available by Reppo), a workhorse electric train in service for three decades.

It's an easier train to use, so newbies and intermediate level virtual conductors will like this train and the little things that make it special in 2026 for being a 2012 release with the talking audio - ala short audio loops), but go to fast and you may experience wheel slippage. But for the most part, it's a convenient and easier train to use and a great way to get an Amtrak train in your collection.

Unfortunately, older route add-ons also means frustration. This DLC means strict-timetables. While I didn't see any missing signaling and speed limits, this route is not friendly for those who are a few minutes late. Routes are longer and nothing beats riding a super long ride to receive the error "You have failed to complete this scenario to the time table".

So, for these long rides, you'll need to keep an eye on speed changes, no happy moments to spend to long on photo sessions or outside viewing because you will need to pay attention that speed is not going to low or too fast.

It's also important to note that this game takes about 817MB of disk space. So, for those who don't have a dedicated harddrive for TSC and are often watching disk space usage, this one is under a gig.

GAMEPLAY:

As mentioned, the Amtrack AEM-7 is an easier train to use. Reverse uses S/W, Power Controller uses A/D, Train Brake Handle is ; and Locomotive Brake Handle is /. Engine Brakes are [ and ]. Horn is space bar, wiper is V, H for headlight, Sander is X and Pantograph is P, B is Bell and R is Main Reservoir and Brake Cylinder and W is Equalising Pressure and Brake Pipe Pressure. And you have a Speed Control Enable, Cruise Control and Alerter Enable (which is off via default).

But most of the time, the S/W and A/D is what you will be using a lot via keyboard. The game does allow use for a Controller.

MANUAL: Yes, it comes with a manual titled "Driving the AEM-7.pdf".

WHAT ABOUT THE ROUTE ITSELF? While Euro railfans are very precise on key structures, I don't think many American reviewers complain of structure accuracy.

Yes, it's 2011 graphic style but there are recent games and locomotives that look more old school and again, no one really plays TSC for great graphics. If you did, then you would be focusing on "Train Simulator World".

There are AI trains, primarily Amtrak but you will see an occasional freight train show up.

This is a pretty long route. Yes, 2012 and a lot of the older routes, they really put effort of making sure you get more bang for the buck with longer routes, people walking around.

It has Free Roam, you get around four scenarios for career and standard and there are scenarios created by people that you can download via the Steam workshop.

JUDGMENT CALL:

With "Northeast Corridor: New York - Philadelphia", yes, it's an older route that comes with an Amtrak electric train sold for under $6 US. It's affordable and you do get a lot of bang for your buck for a classic route.

But it's an older route and older Dovetail Games/Railworks routes are unforgiving. For modern train sims that cut you a break for being a few minutes late, this route is a reminder of how frustrating this DLC could be if playing on career mode.

It's pass or fail and unlike other train games with passing grades of A to F, you either make it on time or fail if you don't. And for such a long ride, that may irritate people.

So, in one hand, you want this route because it covers an important area of the US and there are scenarios from third party to creators that have made this route much more fun to have. And it's on of the cheaper routes when on sale.

But if you are a person with anger issues or suffer from high blood pressure, then I caution you that this DLC is demanding on punctuality. There is no "few minutes late" it's more of be there within the ETA. You pass or fail and again, these are long trips and I don't like it when you play for a loooooong time to find out that you were off on the timetable right at the end.

I will give it a thumbs up because it's a cheap route that comes with an iconic Amtrak train and I enjoyed the ride. Not so much of the timetable failure. Sure I know there are ways to edit the timetable but I'm not going to do that.

Fortunately, I play with a casual approach and viewpoint when it comes to TSC, as my approach is the same when I ride on a train somewhere in the world via IRL. I enjoy the experience, the view and the ability to control this iconic Amtrak train for a long distances and I did just that with the Amtrak AEM-7 and the NEC route.

Definitely worth it for under $6 (US) and I recommend it!
