I’ve been a long-time player of Overwatch since its launch in 2016. I’ve seen some of the highest highs and lowest lows the game has gone through, and I’ve experienced all of it firsthand. At this point in 2026, I genuinely believe Overwatch is in one of the best states it has ever been in.

I won’t ignore the failed promises surrounding “Overwatch 2,” especially the cancelled PvE content and the communication issues that frustrated much of the community. Those criticisms were valid at the time. However, the wave of negative review bombing that still follows the game today feels outdated and no longer reflective of its current state. The version of Overwatch that exists now is not the same version that disappointed players during that transition period.

The current leadership and dev team at Blizzard clearly show a renewed level of passion and responsiveness. The 2026 updates demonstrate consistent balance adjustments, meaningful hero reworks, faster patch cycles, and a clearer design philosophy. New heroes feel creative and well-integrated, maps are more thoughtfully designed, and competitive integrity is stronger than it has been in years. The developers appear to be listening more closely to community feedback and iterating more quickly when something does not work. For new players coming in, don’t be discouraged by the negative reviews tied to Overwatch. The game today is fun if you enjoy hero shooters. It is competitively viable without being pay-to-win, the balance is relatively stable compared to many past metas, and the cosmetic system—while monetized—is optional and does not impact gameplay performance. Matches feel dynamic, teamwork matters, and individual skill expression is still rewarded.

No live service game is perfect, and Overwatch has absolutely stumbled in the past. But judging it solely on its lowest moments ignores the improvements that have followed. In its current form, it stands on top for hero shooters.
