One of my favorite games to come out in the last decade. Atmosphere is unmatched. Can't wait to see what this developer does next

This game has a really specific audience - fans of shadow of the colossus. I have a lot of respect for the small development team for pulling it off and getting the game out. The game is at it's best when the huge bosses show up and make you forget that this is just an indie game, especially with how cinematic can get during these fights. It's probably the only game aside from shadow of the colossus (from 17 years ago) where the mystique really comes from what boss you're going to fight next, how big will they be, how will you bring them down etc.

There's new additions to the gameplay though aside from just bringing down giants, such as survival mechanics, basic enemies and a grappling hook. Not all of these work though. First of all, the survival is extremely barebones and is more of an annoyance than anything, the same can be said for weapon durability and combat with basic enemies. They're really simple mechanics that don't make the game more challenging, they're just there for the sake of it and don't really seem to fit. Stopping to eat during these massive fights just really makes it less engaging and I think it would have benefited from sticking with the simple design that shadow of the colossus had. The grappling hook is a lot of fun to use both during exploration and during bosses, it's by far the best addition. A lot of the annoyances that came with shadow of the colossus unfortunately get amplified here. Fights can drag out because you fall off an enemy at the wrong time, the movement physics can get weird and cause you to either clip into stuff or get launched, sometimes resulting in extremely frustrating deaths. The fact the bosses can drag on really shows how annoying the survival mechanics are too since your hunger meter is always going down. Since I've played, an update came out to improve movement/climbing so hopefully this criticism wont mean much soon.

Like I said, this game has a specific audience. If you're not a fan of shadow of the colossus already, I can't guarantee this will win you over. If you are, I can't recommend it enough. It really captures a lot of what made that game great. The production value during the final boss itself would put AAA companies that work on cinematic titles to shame. It'd be cool to see more people try it out because the devs clearly put a lot of work into this.

If you're not already the type of person that praises an old, text heavy rpg as one of the greatest games of all time. Then truly, this game can (and will) change the nature of a man

If you like HR Giger art, trees and psychological horror, there's no way you wont like Darkwood. (Also this game has the most intense "survive the night" gimmick I've ever seen in a survival horror game)
