It's a tactics game yet its missions punish the player for not luckily guessing enemy spawns?
I don't understand throwing luck into a strategy game, but whatever, it's decently enjoyable nonetheless although I'm not partial to pvp. I really can't be assed to give it more than a few hours of my time each play session because it's just trial and error on randomly generated missions with a dice-roll chance to win.
Or, you know, i just suck, there's that too.

Music's really the main draw to this game, the gameplay is secondary.

I finally bit the bullet and bought it and it is 100% worth it.

i am risking a refund

It's an accustomed taste and something that requires a lot of getting used to. From all the QOL improvements of AS2, one should expect the foundation to be less stable in its founding title.
Stealth seems to be heavily encouraged here, and yet half of the time it doesn't work properly and you're going to find yourself shot at random.
Armor mechanics are there, but are not very reliable and incredibly primitive. Side & rear shots are more encouraged, though frontal kills aren't impossible.
It's also incredibly direct control heavy as your AI companions tend to be kind of stupid, even when on 'fire at will' mode. If you get a tank in the mission, you're pretty much direct controlling that the whole mission as the infantry takes a backseat.
Enemies will tend to drop everything they're doing regardless of being shot at just to run up to your armor and throw AT or regular grenades at it, which trivializes a lot of fights.
It's incredibly flawed but it has its charm and it's decent fun. Much better mission choices than the Assault Squad titles, that's for sure.
