10/10. Spot-on narration, delightful soundtrack, the pure selflessness of the characters makes them all likeable. Fun 2D platformer too! (Except for the expansion levels.)

Great game, challenging but never too hard. If you want to play a puzzle platformer that isn't ludicrously complex like Braid or Portal, this is what you're looking for. 100% is attainable (and I'm a n00b), for the achievement hunters. Story is unimportant, only serves to give a reason to why this kid roams around underground, but nobody plays for the story. OST is good (haven't bought the dlc for it yet though).

Kicking myself for not having already written this review.

My favourite out of the Saints' Row games.

Superpowers are great. Launching this game to head into co-op with a friend is always fun, running around the city throwing cars into buildings and stuff (does get old eventually though). I'll eventually get round to installing a Mission Replay mod so that those would be accessible too. Lots of pop- (and not-so-pop-)culture references, although little subtlety to them. Callbacks to earlier games are nice. Difficulty adjustment allows for challenge, but not to a frustrating level.

Co-op is buggy, and certain missions have timing/sync issues which annoyingly excludes them from co-op play. Also, crashes like 5% of the time.

5/7

I loved Assassin's Creed 1, albeit it basically repeating the same formula 9 times for its story, then finishing off with 3-6 mob fights to check your swordfighting skill wasn't rusty. It does set the mold for what it means to live and die by the Creed - obedience to the cause and suppression of self-identity/ego.

This game flips that on its head, with a passionate protagonist who seeks (of his own volition) revenge against his family's murderers, gradually learning to be less brash and more merciful in a journey that spans 2 decades. He takes on the mantle of Assassin as a family tradition, and most of the etiquette seems to come to him naturally, with his uncle training him in the parts that don't. The story only gets more exciting, and always feels fresh.

The combat system is improved from the first game, in that health is shown - a trade-off for not being able to one-hit counter-kill enemies. Fistfighting has also improved (unless I just sucked at it in the first game), as countering is now possible, you get a good measure for how many hits the enemy can take, and you don't easily get swarmed by passers-by deciding to jump in. Double stealth blades are nice too, and taking out enemies nearby if they're close enough to the latest person you stabbed. This weapon, and another one revealed in the trailer, are story-related in a way that connects to the first game's protagonist (after the events of Bloodlines). Stealth and climbing haven't changed, aside from the jump climb which speeds up scaling buildings. You should buy this game mostly to enjoy how it feels to be able to swim, even if nobody else in Italy can.

Would recommend, £4 on sale for a story that took 50 hours to complete (and then some, for collectibles) is hard to beat.

I think the controls are deliberately part of the difficulty of this game, not worth. At least most games that start on hard mode give you a fighting chance. Only got this as part of a Humble Bundle anyway.

It was a good experience, I enjoyed the story layout (memory blocks visualised as DNA strands), the amount of detail put into every location (there are only 4 cities and some patches of open kingdom between them, but they're big enough that the game isn't boring), the combat (which starts off simple but gradually adds another modicum of complexity as you progress, which does make fighting easier since attracting a mob is suicide in earlygame but mandatory in lategame), and the organised assassination notes (to offer you a way to stealth assassinate targets without the city guards on your tail constantly - although you can brute force your way through as loudly as you want with the exact same overall outcome, if you can survive it).

It is a little flawed though:
  • Launching the game with Steam Overlay, or maybe just through Steam at all, makes the XInput controller useless for the opening screens - you need to click through with mouse (when I launched the DX9/10 executables from directory directly, not only did Steam not show me as playing it, but the controller actually managed to interact with the game through the first cutscene and save profile selection) which is why the store page marks it as Partial Controller Support rather than Full Controller Support, which it actually does have.
  • Sometimes the fight/action cam clips into a wall and you can't see yourself, which makes things tricky when you're surrounded and can't easily move to a point where the cam can see you again.
  • The collectibles/additional memories aren't worth completing, they do nothing for you and just waste your time if you go out of your way to find them all. Heck forbid you miss a single flag and scour the whole map multiple times seeking it out. If you ever find yourself insanely bored, this might be appealing, but it's much less effort to download a savegame with additional memories and just play from that.
  • Collectibles aside, there is 0 replay value. You can expect more freeroam fun from your average Saints Row game than this, there isn't much to do aside from run around and complete old missions with the corresponding skills for the level/memory. You'll probably find yourself uninstalling it not long after finishing.

Definitely worth a buy, and I get why it's regarded as a modern classic. Sales are coming soon too, so you can pick it up then for like £2.

Why do Devolver have a thing for publishing indie games with insane difficulty curves? Hotline Miami 2, Hard Reset, Titan Souls (turned out to be a complete waste of money given how underwhelming it was), even this game (which, according to other Steam reviews, is a light version of Mark of the Ninja?) is a pain in the arse in specific levels - the finale especially, when they flip the overall objectives from stealth to getting through the building quickly (in a single fluid run - dying at all places you back at the start of the run), killing the boss, and getting out. Getting injured doesn't even result in immediate death this time, too, they let you flail around for up to 9 seconds (max, and this timer is reset after each fresh kill).

Good game though, logged 7.0 hours at the time of writing (and about to start NG+), decently rhythmic enough to tag as "podcasting" (listening to podcasts/music while playing). For anyone on the fence about getting this, know that the jumping function is buggy (but the hints will still imply it's intentional) and controller/XInput support is perfect. I'm really just recommending this because I'm a sucker for Devolver and the few games they make that I'm competent at.

For all its criticisms - and there are many - just remember that you can't enjoy the soundtrack DLC if you don't have the base game.

To think that this masterpiece was (mostly) the fruit of one man's labours... The art style is gorgeous, the ambience is just right, and the platforming isn't too challenging. What's not to love?

If you're one of those who suck at puzzle games but enjoy having to reach for a guide/having the value of their existence questioned regardless, you won't regret getting this. (On the flipside, if you're smart and/or intelligent and like figuring (a lot of) things out yourself for the first time, you'd definitely enjoy this too.)

Revamped design, impressive soundtrack, what's not to like? Almost nothing looks the same as it used to, and the game is better off for it. If you're a fan of the originals, or generally into challenging 2D platformers, you'll enjoy this game.
