Early Access Review
GTFO is a great experience for people looking for a tough as nails, communication heavy survival horror game.

If you're looking to buy, keep in mind this game is heavily reliant on stealth gameplay, and missions will take long periods of time (1 hour + per mission generally)

This game is a great time to play with a large group of friends.

I wouldn't recommend getting it if you can't gather at least 6 people to play regularly. In my opinion, 6 players is the tipping point where the game gets really fun, but the more players the better.

Early Access Review
Seeing as how this game is about to finally come out of Early Access in the very near future, I feel like I can finally review this game proper without the devs potentially turning the game on it's head, making my review invalid.

This is one of the most skill intensive and original feeling racing games I've ever played. Distance gives you so many tools for movement that when you first start it can honestly feel overwhelming, but if you're willing to stick through it and learn the intricacies of the game, there's a wonderful experience to be had here.

Now it's worth noting that if you're looking for a conventional, old-fashioned racing game where you get from point A to B, you probably won't find it here, and I feel like a lot of the negative reviews for this game are from people who were under this impression when they bought it, and what they got disappointed them because of that. Distance is one part racing game, one part platformer, and a sprinkle of resource management in the form of the overheat mechanic.

The tracks are extremely open and there is often nothing stopping you from jumping off the track and trecking your own path. There is a start and end to every sprint track (sprint being the name of the primary gamemode, where you get from start to finish as fast as possible), but how you get there if completely up to you, and if you play with some of the experts of this game, you'll see them pull some crazy stuff, as they hop from building to building in some odd direction or take giant nosedives to god-knows-where.

Now what I just described is a topic of contention for some players. Not taking the "intended" route the track designer potentially thought about and shaving time off your records that way. We call these skips. Don't expect to get in the top 100 on the global leaderboard of most popular tracks if you're not willing to learn a few skips. If this idea is aggravating to you, I highly recommend not picking this game up, because whether you like it or not, skips are a central pillar of this game's experience and skill cap and will not be going anywhere anytime soon. However, if this sounds interesting, or otherwise like watching speedruns (which is what I compare skips to a lot), this game might provide you an experience no other game can.

As briefly mentioned earlier, this game has leaderboards. The leaderboards shows after you finish the race and keeps track of your best times on any particular track, your friends' best times, the times of anyone you are playing with in a server, and most importantly, the global leaderboard to see just how hard NightBane and Ferreus kicked your time into an early grave.

In case you haven't caught on, the game also comes with it's very own Track Editor, and while I'm not the most qualified to comment on it, the editor has gotten a lot of love from the developers over the years, and it seems to be a very powerful and capable tool for those who are interested in learning about it. If you are interested in learning about this editor, allow me to shoutout a friend a extremely good player, pigpenguin and his comprehensive baby's-first distance track guide.

This guide has the building blocks you need to start a very basic map, as well as a list of important shortcuts you may want to know. Definately give it a read through if you're interested in designing tracks.

A lot of the meat of this game comes from the community levels that are created on the daily, and these tracks can range from Realms, to meh, to super good tracks, and as you may imagine, a dedicated fanbase can find ways to make tracks super-duper mega-ultra hard, so regardless of how good you are at this game, there's likely a track or two out there on the workshop that's bound to kick you in the pants. Especially if it's made by Tiedye.

Finally, one last segment on the community. The community is a super friendly group of people who I've had the pleasure of talking with in both in game and on Discord. The pro's are often very willing to teach new players how to get better at the game, as well as spread the knowledge of skips and movement techniques if you just ask them. A lot of the most prominent track designers are very approachable and hop into servers all the time just to hang around with the rest of us normies. Distance has it's own official discord channel. If you decide this is a game you want to play, I highly recommend joining the discord channel. It's filled with friendly people from all facets of the game, and the discord hosts servers every Saturday as a sort of community get-together.

TL;DR final verdict: Great game, highly recommend. Just be willing to have an open mind to the formula of this game if you're coming from other racing games.
