why are communities that break the guidelines allowed?
the steam community guidelines state no drugs, but you have games like "Drug Dealer Simulator" that have discussions and screenshots/videos centered around the act of illegally selling drugs.

why is this allowed?

Steam support regularly says that they'll "mention it to the team" when it's about stuff they don't handle. That's a fancy way of saying "noted, don't care, now let me get back to my work". Another one is "Post it in the suggestiosn forum".

There is no issue in discussing things politely. People casually referring to weed use also isn't a real issue. However, when you make a thread talking about selling it, that's when you certainly cross the line.

Game hubs can have their own subrules. Naturally a game about drugs will have talk about it. If the developer and his mod team keep things relatively normal in their game hub and it doesn't spread to other hubs, there is little to worry about.

Guidelines are exactly that, guidelines. Keep in mind that a guideline never is a hard line.

Different rules for games sold in the store and user generated content. The guidelines are for user generated content, not games.
Also; those communities don't necessarily violate the guidelines (though they may stretch it a little...). For example.... drugs and alcohol are a restricted topic on the forums, but within the context of certain games (like GTA for example) then you're not talking about alcohol in real life, but the game mechanic. As such a completely different context.

Didn't you complain about the game in their game hub multiple times already?

sure, that's the game that made me think about this. what's the issue? are you a P.I.? you aren't adding anything to the discussion.

plenty of forum posts/screenshots/videos/etc of drugs. that's user generated content, friend.

read the guidelines ;) someone from steam support also agreed that this is against the guidelines and would be "speaking to their team". this is troubling as many people unknowingly have user content that breaks this rule, and it seems to be enforced as they see fit, which is insane when there are whole games around the topic.

just curious why it's ok to apply the rules as such and have double standards. don't think i'll be getting an answer, though.

this is a meta discussion about the guidelines, not about whether drugs are good/bad. please stay on topic, thanks.

You shouldn't make posts like these when you have no idea what you're talking about. Also you bought the automated response and thought it was someone on support actually agreeing with you xD

Because a game that has drugs in it is not the same as discussing real life drugs? Just like a game where you kill someone isn't the same as actually killing someone in real life?

Also screenshots from games can allow content like nudity because steam is able to put an age filter on accessing those communities while the forum in general has no age rating so it must be appropriate for all age ranges
sure, but i can laugh at people sleuthing through it like some internet PI and reporting posts they had nothing to do with from a month ago. not great reading comprehension in this thread.

:crashbcoot:

i also reread that post i made when i first saw that game and it's not "offensive or rude", but yes it's harsh. no issue with that. i'd suggest getting some thicker skin. how do you function in the real world? i've lived what that game attempts to portray in the US, and it doesn't do it well at all. it's just stereotypical and not good. get over it, that's my opinion. these lackadaisical early access games should get anyone fuming who cares about quality games on steam.

remember when green light was cut partly due to them wanting to get more quality games in faster? now they just let anything in! steam doesn't care, any game is more $ for them at this point. the dreck on this store is unreal. that's what being a monopoly does to a company.

EU devs view of the US in their games is a trope at this point. American Truck Sim did it pretty well, but most of the time it is just not good at all. me pointing this out is nationalist? lmao, i'd love to know what you do for a living if you think that. nationalist is a loaded term anyway, there's nothing negative about being proud of where you are from. nationalist =/= racist.

the "message" might not make sense to you, david, but at least some people are getting it. i missed this one before, thank you sir. i understand the guy was telling me to politely go away with the "i'll talk to the team" line, but then you have rules that are open to interpretation by these volunteer mods. that leaves it open to each mod deciding if a post crosses the guide"line". if it were laid out in the guidelines like you laid it out that would be different. i'm literally just reading the guidelines that are there.

but i did some more quick research and i now understand the "guidelines" mean absolutely nothing, and it really is just these people making decisions mostly based off their own agendas/opinions. this is where you enter dangerous territory, but i don't expect the autopilot bots to realize this and ask these questions.

volunteers should have some privileges on forums like blizzard does it, but to give them that level of control is crazy. just cheap on gaben's part. makes blizzard support look top tier, because it is compared to that. their guidelines are also way more clear. tack on the fact that devs can also moderate their hubs and you then run into actual censorship. the first time i posted that in the 'drug dealer sim' forum the dev deleted it instantly. any decent forum with vendors/support/reviews don't actually give them moderation ability because that's exactly what happens.

with rules so open ended do you really think steam would care a dev is removing negative things from their discussions? "the negative comments hurt my feelings so i removed it". sounds like an awesome existence.

very sad what the internet has become in the year 2020. it used to be actual discussion, now it's just silence anyone you don't agree with.

report ugc via its report function available on the file page.

everything else is not relevant.

*ugc = user generated content.
each user is responsible for the crap they upload, not anyone else.

censorship is out of control on steam i 100% agree on that point.there is games forums that delete warn and ban you from talking about game related mechanics/content just about
anything else under the sun they dont like its a cesspool right now
It's really very, very simple.

DOING a criminal act is vastly different from talking about, fantasising or romanticising and act.

So you'll similar be OK for GTA to be banned, right?

You see the problem here? This is what happens when you think too black and white - you don't appreciate where the line you've drawn ends.

Bye bye all FPSes then because in most western countries any sort of gun crime is also illegal.

So GTA and all FPSes? Any more? Why beat em ups of course, violent assault is also illegal in most western countries. Bugger.

So all FPSes, fighters, GTA, surely there's no more, right?

Street racers? Assassin's Creed, Just Cause.... do you get the point yet?
