Valve owns your games
You don't get any physical copy of your games, no box cover etc.

That's's why games on Steam should be sold at half price.

You don't own the game if it's a physical copy either

You're licensing it

That's news to me and developers/publishers that sell their games on Origin, GOG, Uplay, PSN, xbox live. and so on.

The packaging is like a dollar of the game's price. Producing a DVD en masse isn't terrible expensive either. The box art part is also wrong as still more than enough marketing artwork is produced.

you own a license to use them, you dont own the game. if you would own them, you would be allowed to do anything with them, including copying and reselling them. you never own software, any software.

True, but with a physical copy of said game I can sell or trade my license to someone else when I no longer wish to use the game (and it's pretty much legal). Can't really do that with games bought and activated through steam without running afoul of the SSA.

Only on the consoles, and that's ending too. MS tried to end it for the current gen, but Sony used it to fight the console war. They may not do so on the next gen.

Winter Sale 2016 is just around the corner and lotsa games shall be sold over half their original price I believe, so make use of it :P

I do however understand ur concern, to me the most important thing is that I can tell everyone around me that I bought the game while pointing at the box. When u bought something on Steam it looks stupid AF to point at ur PC -_-

Valve doesn't "own" other developers and or publishers property - Valve has a platform, Steam, that developers and or publishers can release products on under a set of agreements with Valve that actually benefits Valve per product purchase percentage of said product. In addition to said agreements, Steam is an absolute blessing of a platform to reach millions of users across the world in one compacted community for developers and publishers. Going digital instead of relying on physical based sales in this era and new generation of gamers is by far, hands down, the best way to reach more consumers.

Valve, however, can take action against an account with products on it if the user infringing on the subscriber agreement the user initially agrees to when creating an account (in addition to the privacy agreement, general terms of service, etc). There's lots to read up on and be aware of, it's all there for users to review -- even before a users account is created during the registration process.

In addition to your comment about half prices -- Steam, historically, has large events year-round that developers and publishers take part in by listing their products at incredible discounted prices that you wouldn't find anywhere else on any other platform. Historically, there's also a Winter Sale yearly (which is the Christmas sale), so I'd definitely be looking out for that for some good deals right before Christmas to send to friends, and family.

ladies and gents, this is why reading that long boring wall of text known as Terms of Service can be a smart idea.

usually it comes down to ppl thinking " it cant be legally enforced so who cares really"

As long as you destroy any copy you have and you forward the medium and any documentation, it's perfectly legal in most countries, whatever the license may say. That was the gist of the Oralce court case in Germany.

However, if the game comes with a registration - as most hav for years, even before Steam - you're SOL reselling them.

even if the Tos clearly says that per the license you are not allowed to resell said retail software?

In the EU, certainly. The first sale doctrine is applicable to software here. That it is ruled to be also applicable for downloads is rather new, but for physical media it has always been the case.
The most important part is that the original licencee is no longer able to use the software.

Steam says if they go out of busness that they will offer full downloads of the games.
