Why should they?

The Golden profile background includes the mini profile :) costs 5000

I think the points price is fine.
wuddih Jul 15, 2020 @ 6:41am
you bought the animated avatar frame for 2k and thought that was fine. why being picky about this one now?
Crazy Tiger Jul 15, 2020 @ 7:21am
People can always simply use the market if that's cheaper. I don't see the issue here.

As they are simply a bonus for making purchases you would normally make. I see no issue with the cost in free points.

Points don't go away now and the shop will still be there when you get enough points to buy it.

I already bought the best stuff I could get my hands on that appeals to me (amidst a back drop of pronography games/early access scams/crappy titles passing themselves off as AAA. This store front is messy and that's putting it mildly). I'm also certainly not the type to upload great works of art that gets showered in awards that grant points. I can see where OP is coming from that they could be in the same boat asking to lower those prices on certain items. Normally I forbid myself from even speaking up in these situations let alone quoting a moderator/administrator. But I agree, twenty bucks is quite steep for something with far less animated pixels.

People spend more then that on jewelry, to be honest. Something I would never so as it it seems pointless to me.

Here, you don't even spend money on it. You get the points for free, then decide what you want to use them for or save them for something if you don't have enough.

As I said, they are just an extra for buying what you were planning on buying either way.

My wife got points when she spent the $50 in Steam Wallet funds I sent her through Steam.

So in essence you want things to be cheaper just to accommodate the fact that you spend less on the Steam store. Or at least, that's what is getting implied.

I don't think you understand the purpose of a loyalty program, which the points and points store in essence is.

The company you work for
Spawn is a volunteer community mod, he doesn't work for Valve.

How about cheaper things just to improve availability.
Why? And a reason other than "because I want to", please.

Optional stuff is "preying" now?

This is no different than the stamp cards for gas stations and such. How is it suddenly different just because Steam does it?

Citation from a credible source that they are losing market share, please.

You two can believe that everyone should take everything at face value. But money goes to everything, not just Steam. People need to eat, have bills to pay, why lock them out of the availability of items that could make their lives a little more interesting?
Eating and bills are primary in life. Games and the stuff in the points store are luxury/extra. The former 2 are important to life, the latter 2 are bonus.

Nobody is locked out, people can simply get them later when they have gotten enough points.

There is no reason to just make everything cheaper, cause there will come a person who will say it must be cheaper again. Life isn't fair and you aren't entitled to everything.

The company you work for has demonstrated countless times that individual choice doesn't matter. They've tried every psychological experiment revolving around FOMO and gambling.
The only simple thing about this system was it was deployed when FOMO was no longer hitting the larger profit margins made by insanely wealthy individuals.

Like Crazy Tiger said, I don't work for Valve. I am a volunteer.

Nothing of what you just stated counters anything that I had said.

Users were asking for animated avatars and backgrounds for a long time. They finally got them.

You can guess about the why and their profits all you want, but that is all it is, a guess and not likely an accurate one, though neither of us can know for sure.

No, can we stay on topic please? None of that has to do with the points needed to get an item from the point store.

Digital goods have infinite supply and it's stuff like this that gets laughed at when leadership changes, leadership screws up, and Steam becomes another footnote in history in not trusting "Too big to fail" it's long term BS like this that sews distrust that has people like me questioning it. Why can't they be a humble company and just sell games without all these side shows designed to prey on peoples capital?

Loyalty cannot be bought, it has to be earned. A loyalty program is no different hence why Steam is steadily losing market share.

EDIT: Bleh, who am I kidding. Don't hurt yourselves trying to enforce this equilibrium.
I will no longer be posting in this section.

A bonus for making a purchase on Steam. Such things have existed for a long time and, again, have been requested here as well. Store will give points that people can use to get a knife or frying pan after spending well over $100.

You are allowed your opinion, but I have to disagree about it being a bad idea or bad thing, nor about the points being too high.

Valve still sells games. You don't have to participate in the extras if you do not want them, but many seem to enjoy it and have no issues.

... Loyalty can actually be bought. That has been show through out history, many, many times. Steam is not losing market shares either. Their making more and have even more users then ever.

Again FREE POINTS. If someone chooses to buy a game over buying food, then that is a bad decision and one that they made. At some point, they have to take responsibility for their own actions.

Actaly, they do, hence why they want it cheaper. If they didn't participate, then it would be a non-issue and they wouldn't be asking to lower the points needed.

The prices are good as they are. They are just a cosmetic and a thank you for purchasing stuff on Steam (and maybe have good stuff on the community that people reward you with some points).
