I have CD but No Product key. Help please.

So I bought a copy of "The Movies" from Lionhead Studios at a thrift store today.... I usually wouldnt bother with opened/second hand PC games as there is the issue of product keys.. However The Movies is an old game and 1.) I wasnt sure if it would require one. And 2.) you cannot buy a new physical copy or a digital download anywhere. It is not commercially available at all. It used to be on Steam but it was removed.. I think because the devs didnt want to support it anymore. So long story short this is a game I have wanted for a long time and decided to take a chance with it. I got it for $3.00.

So sadly after trying to install it asks for a product key which unfortunately was not included.

Would this game be considered abandonware since it is no longer supported or commercially sold?

Thanks.. I'm not a begger.. Just dont want to do anything illegal and really dont know how to get around this legally.

Also the game you're talking about, are you sure it's on Steam?

It is not on Steam.. it used to be. And thanks I'll edit the OP and take out the part about cracks.

Then you might just have bought a dead game that can't be run legally.

Never buy PC games used. They tend to either be missing the key or the key is tied to an account already and can not be used again.

Note it was removed likely because Lionhead was bought out by Microsoft, but the game is distributed by Activision

just recommend connect who ever may have control on it, tell them you got the CD but missing the CD key
and see if they can help you with one to get it on Steam or a CD to get it working
both partys i think work with Steam also today so may be able to get a key even that its removed

I'm aware. As I pointed out in the OP I wasnt sure if this game would require a key or not being so old and I felt it was worth taking a chance on since you cannot get it anywhere else.

Thanks. I'm trying this now. I opened a thread on the Godus forums last night to see if the devs can point me in the right direction. As some of them used to work at Lionhead and Peter Molyneux their boss.. Owned it. So I figure thats a good place to start.

the game does definately exist as a non-Steam copy and no hardcopy has ever included a Steam key. so you are completely wrong here in any case.

your place to go? the store were you bought it, nowhere else.

First off.. I never said it needed a Steam key. I said it needed a product key. A game doesnt need to be on Steam or have anything to do with Steam to require a product key. I assure you I am not wrong on this. I know what a product key window looks like when it pops up.

Second I am fairly certain this game as well as a couple other old Lionhead games (Black and White 1 & 2) are not commercially available at all. I didnt say it didnt exist as a non-Steam copy.. I just said you cant buy it from a commercial retailer anymore. Commercial retailers are places like Steam, Good Old Games, Gamestop, Origin, etc. However if you say I'm "definitely" wrong on this please prove me wrong. I would love to buy this game in a safe legitimate manner.

I'll post an update when I hear anything.. As of right now I have got no response from 22cans devs yet. I tries calling Activision but the only support number I could find does not work... I havent tried Microsoft yet as I'm fairly certain that even getting in touch with the right person on the matter will be almost impossible. I'd probably get a more helpful response from the tree in my back yard lol.

You're aware that amazon.co.uk and amazon.com have several copies available. (Although the US site seems horribly overpriced compared to the UK one...)

Amazon is not a commercial retailer for them. Either people selling opened copies or overpriced new old stock. So I'm a either too cheap or too skeptical lol.
