but ... buy it when it is on discount, not full price.
Steam controller is overpriced anyway. Try to get your hands on a 360 or XBox One pad. Most games are optimized for them by displaying the right face buttons and the 360 one should be fairly cheap by now.
If I would buy something else than steam cont, next one would be ps cont cuz Im not that much friendly with microsft.
The best thing about this controller is the amount of customization it offers behind the scenes and on the fly; and it works incredibly well with control-supported games and does a substantial job acting as a keyboard and mouse.
The downside to this controller...
It will only work through Steam; that means many games will go unsupported. It acts as a mouse outside of Steam, which means that compared to other popular controllers, it is inferior in this aspect.
The biggest problem with this controller is the bumper button(s) durability. My right bumper button broke ~60 hours in which is unfortunately exceedingly common place (the evidence is in reviews and forums). Many bumpers seem to fail within 40-100 hours; but some make it through. Those that make it through will also need to eventually deal with the AYXB buttons slowing down and eventually not working.
My advice to you would to be to get a cheaper controller that has full support and that is more ergonomic. I really do love the xbox controllers. My favourite controller (and current use) is a cheap Logitech F310 gamepad; this thing is a tank.
In the end (and it is completely my opinion) the pros to the Steam controller simply do NOT outweight the cons.
But as you don't use any controller maybe it will be less of an issue for you
Its good for some games, but for games created with Controller in mind that uses all that a controller has, I think it does not work as well
If you anyway pick not to go with it, I highly recommend going with an Xbox controller over a PS4 as most games that are built for controller support are built with Xbox 360/One in mind, and not a PS4 one
And also not all controller supporting games support the PS4 input, most of all however support the Xbox 360/One input
Xbox controller is the way to go for most people and what I used instead of steam controller (which cost me NZ$109 >.< ).
I personally prefer my "Afterglow" ps3 controller however - haven't found a game it doesnt work with yet and its smaller (Im female so have small hands haha)
I believe it's more suited for "couch gaming" in games that require mouse control since you can use the haptics and trackpads as a mouse.
I found the xbox design more comfortable as I found PS style gamepads - like the mentioned Logitech 310.
