Is there a way to see what's making heat?
In the temperature overlay filter I can see what temperature the ship is in different places, but I can't see where heat is coming from. Is there a way to see what the heat sources are and how much they are emitting, similar to the power overlay? This would make it easier for me to shut down problematic heat sources at certain times like cyclic solar flares.

not intended to work that way, you build what you need, then you figure out where to place your cooling. no, there's no overlay for just machinery operational heat, independent of the regulated on-board air. it would also have very little useful data in it. say you build an O2 gen a scrubber and a H2O collector in a closet; it's going to be much hotter than that generation overlay shows, because it builds up and radiates.

you might be able to fake it a bit, if you think knowing that will help you... make a save, pause the game, and scroll around and turn off all the thermal regulators, draft the crew and send em outside the nearest airlock, then unpause...

you'll probably lose some crew, but you're gonna reload after everything disperses and you get a clear reading of the heat generation map, anyway. :-)

And slightly wrong:)
All industrial facilities provide some info about their heat generation via the "flame" icon.
The more flames there are the more heat it generates.

(finally i can at least link stuff:P)

Basicly i would say every so flame icon equals about ~60 or so Celsius(or Kelvin:P, i wont count it out in Fahrenheit:P). Maybe 80.
Generally for those facilities that provide 3 flame icon around 2 thermal generators should be in the vicinity. (It is probably more like 3.5 needs 2?)
So for instance if you place down nearby 3 facilities that each produce flame icons, like the Assmebler, Advanced Assembler and Metal refinery. The min amount of thermal regulators you need to deal with them is 4. (But usually 5 is needed.) Because the thermal generators are able to "strengthen" each other.
Ok, thanks folks.
The flame icon Nordil refers to is in the build menu for each structure. There's also a poison icon which indicates toxic gas produced.

Typically it's industry items that produce heat, like ore processors, recyclers, refineries, etc. Shutting down some or all of these during intense thermal events can be less disruptive than an overheated ship, but ideally you'd spam enough thermal regulators to handle severe weather without having to shut down production. Early game you might not have enough blocks for lots of regulators though.
