I can't beat the first boss LULW
Literally. The first boss... well after you can resurrect.

Define "boss", because you might be thinking of the first mini-boss
Yeah that's what I mean.

He's a journalist material.
Well we all started somewhere... I remember it took me a few tries to beat him too but once I did, I was addicted.
How do I know what he's going to do when the red symbol goes above my head? I have to choose between jump, dodge, or block.... how long do you have?
I haven't measured it, but I think it's about 1 full second from the moment the sound starts. The only indication you have is the movement of his attack. If he is swinging his sword along the ground, it's a low and you need to Jump over the attack (press the jump button twice in quick succession before landing for a nifty move).

easiest way to beat that first mini boss is to stay far away from him and learn the patterns. Learn when he is open for a single hit, then hit him with a single charged attack. It'll take awhile but it makes the fight trivial.
I've found that (sometimes?) there is enough time to jump after trying to dodge a swipe attack.
The first boss takes a lot of posture damage from your attacks.

Encouraging people to take bad, slow, pointless strategies instead of learning to play the game doesn't really help them, you know.
I'll beat it.. it might take over an hour of gameplay time but whatever.
First boss? The one you need the grappling hook for?

No, the first General after you find the Shuriken.

Typically, I'm in favor of whatever works works.... but yeah.... the game will eventually pit you against a mini boss in a small area where you don't have any room.

Wait until you fight the Longswordsman.

I say go for broke. Go aggressive and try to learn when to parry, jump, dodge, mikiri, etc.
