Stupid annoying tedious grindy repetitive excuse for a game...
I played this all last week and I think it is a really horrible design. I think it exploits people who have an addictive personality or developmental problem. My first attempt I lost but unlocked some better cards. I knew it was going to be a tedious grind right then, so I stopped playing. But the next day I tried again because I wanted to see if an idea I had would work. It mostly did and I got really far, but then I reach this thing called a Reptomancer which seemed deadly. I googled it and saw a Steam thread which said you should focus the daggers. So I killed all the daggers fast, but he kept summoning more. I must have killed 8 daggers and they never hurt me but the Reptomancer himself did massage damage to me. The furthest I ever got, and all that time and effort was wasted on a stupid overpowered enemy that ends the entire game.

I know if I played again the same way and didn't have that enemy, I probably would have completed it. But I wont repeat the whole thing again, especially seeing as I can't get the build I like each time.

I get that "roguelikes" are like this, they let you earn items you really enjoy and then take everything away from one loss. Just because others do it, doesn't mean that you should. To me you are the game designer equivalent of a heroin dealer. You can't make a real game so you make one that exploits people.

The grind in this game is real, especially so for ascension.
Unlocks are terrible and insulting to my intelligence. I consider every single moment of gaming up until I have 100% unlocked and playing the game for real to be a waste of time, as I only intend to play the game that way.
There. I agree with OP in that regard and I have plenty of good reasons to argue my point further.

There are super many games that do not lock content behind grindy progression. Come on, it's the norm, or at least used to be. Heroes of might and Magic up until VI. Street Fighter. Most board games. Warhammer:Total War.
Legend of Zelda and Megaman as well, actually. They have unlocks by progression indeed, but it's not grindy, and most importantly every game is isolated from the next. You do not keep any progress from your last game to the next one. If they did, they would be considered a grind.

Coming from a TCG background I had some trouble adjusting to some things in this game too. Even core principles like "card advantage" are often meaningless in this game. Everything you tend to value in a game like Magic is just completely different here.
It's basically the reason I keep playing this game. A game like Hearthstone is very similar to Magic so it's useless to play both. StS is so different that it's fun to keep playing it alongside my regular TCG.

I struggled at first because i'm not that good at these kind of "building/putting together something strong out of different parts" strategy based game (Making a build in LoL, Diablo 3, or DotA 2, how to build units and structures in SC2 and Warcraft 3 as very limited examples), but it did click in easily because of the puzzle-based approach that i'm decent at, and i have a lot of Roguelike experience. Seemingly easier than people of TCG backgrounds.

I've played turn based games enough aswell. It's not that i can't theory craft, or am completely unable to see what's good and what isn't, but i think part of the things that held me back is bias and preferences, or the "ooo shiny" type obsession. It's also often a struggle between balancing offense and defense.

I learned most of the game on my own, and i'm glad for it because i feel like StS gave me a serious lesson and boost in how to come up with a strategy, or recognize the value of an individual part on its own and combined with another easier, have more critical eye on those things. And it did it while providing me with frustration-free fun and entertainement. Surprised me considering i was wary of whether i'd enjoy it or not, considering it looked like it has a lot of things i wouldn't, including cards.

Definitely not. All of the characters play really differently. I'm at A18 for Silent but I still have trouble beating A6 for Ironclad (mostly because I haven't been playing him as much of course, but the point stands)
Honestly, the only point i see is that you are somehow unable to translate your experience to different characters. Not everyone will have the same problem.

Once unlocked, you can always start from lower Ascension while the opposite isn`t true.... and the result is an Irate Giant stomping around the forums :conwayshrug:

The complaint that you cant get the build you like is part of roguelikes, you deal with what you get. I dont think the dagger enemy is any more overpowered than other elites in the game, you plan around them. I dont think its anywhere near as exploitative as you make it out to be aswell. You make it out like any reward for playing the game is to get people addicted, but locking things behind progression is very much for new players so they dont get overwhelemed. you unlock everything in only a couple of hours of play and then the "addictive" rewards just end which makes me think its just meant for new players. all around I dissagree with everything you have said

Not figuring out OP nightmare purity 90% winrate on your own, you're clearly not a true gamer.

I beat the Reptomancer with my first game with the second class, the rogue one. Without even unlocking anything I got way further, it was so over powered. But now I would need to play it another 10 times to unlock all the upgrades... What a boring grind. I am gonna uninstall. Got better games to play.

I once had a run with runic pyramid and that relic that gives you another strength for every three attacks that made great use of storm of steel. Never bothered with it since though.
Storm of Steel is kind of a silly card that won't fit into most decks, but I kinda like it when it does. It's one of those cards that just feels fun when you're able to make it work.

At least the enemy only did massage damage. Hope your muscles aren't too sore.

Why do so many of you stupid kids type this same stupid message? Nobody needs to hear that idiotic baby brained suggestion. I already uninstalled it. I can still say what I think about the game on the forum.
