For Those With Powerful PCs
is this game as unplayable as some make it out to be?

I've recently bought a new PC with an i5-9600K and Nvidia RTX 2070.

I can deal with the occasional bug, as long as it's not game breaking, but am hoping to at least run this game at 2K resolution and 60fps locked. Thank you.

Just use the FAR mod and the texture pack and have fun.

So this FAR mod is essentially mandatory for all rigs? And I've never heard of the texture pack...

My pc has an i5-3570k with a GTX 1060 and it plays 1080p 60fps just fine. Your pc is a good bit more powerful and should handle 2k easily. There will be some stuttering in-game but that's normal on all platforms.

just install the fix mod you will be fine .

This game was never really unplayable for those with powerful PCs, and definitely not when the FAR mod gained the ability to lower global illumination for the game.

You should have no issues playing this game.

Far mod and set Global Illumination to "High." The reason for the bad performance is because it calculates 128 points for light sources on global illumination. By contrast, that value was 32 on the PS4. Far on "High" sets it to 64 and is indistinguishable from the default setting visually, but drastically improves performance.

Texture pack is here:

and improves textures dramatically. It works in conjunction with FAR.

Downloaded the game, FAR, and texture pack. It looks awesome!

However, I tried unlocking the framerate in the FAR menu, but it does not seem to be working, it's staying locked at 60fps. Any suggestions? Thank you

Also, is setting the in-game AO setting to on in addition to setting the AO setting to "native" in FAR settings the right thing to do? I've done so and the game looks great, 1440p and locked at 60fps. Just want to make sure I'm not negating anything by having both active. Thanks

I would not recommend playing the game at a higher framerate than 60 as it will break some parts that tie game speed to framerate. However, if you want to try it, make sure these three settings are as follows:
  • V-Sync in the in-game settings may need to be OFF (not 100% certain about this as my monitor can't go past 60 Hz anyway but it's worth a shot if it's not working)
  • NieR: Automata > Framerate > Remove 60 FPS Cap in FAR settings needs to be ON
  • Framerate Limiter > Framerate Limit in FAR settings needs to be OFF (or you can increase it to the value you like)
As for AO, you have the right idea. Make sure to keep anti-aliasing disabled as the AO setting has SMAA built-in and having both active at once causes problems with pop-in (not to mention the MSAA implementation the game has is extremely taxing on performance for some reason).

1440p@60fps should be no problem with the RTX 2070. The HD texture pack causes aditional stuttering even if you are using an SSD, I would avoid it. I get little to zero stutter and a rock steady 1440p@60fps (about 50% GPU usage) without the texture pack using an RTX 2080 + FAR mod.

I have these specs :
i7 7700
16GB ram
Gtx 1080 ti
Time played :72 hours
Status: Almost 60 fps locked, just some fps drops 60-55. And only one crash. Important note: I don't use the FAR mod or any kind of third party programs. I really don't understand why people use this mod.

Don't unlock the FPS. It causes scripting/timing issues that can end up in preventing progression until the cap is re-introduced and the last save file reloaded.

Without it: "Almost 60 fps locked, just some fps drops 60-55."
With it: "60 FPS locked at all times. And no cutscene stuttering. Nor any weird fullscreen aspect ratio misalignment either! Oh, and enhanced bloom and AO resolutions, and even HD textures!"
