For me my 4netplayers server has been down since last Sunday, 6 days. I wrote to them at Sunday and got an answer that ""it's on maintenance". If I don´¨t get an honest answer on my latest mail. I'll cancel my account. Sad though. I've spent +100 hours developing my fleet...

yeah with me server was unplayable laggy as hell, they said no server was fine, i asked what resources was allocated to my server, they said u have the who server specs (32 core and like 100gb ram, i said ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ u will have like 30-40 servers on that one server they said no its just mine, had a problem a week later (still laggy) and the guy i spoke to next, his attitude was ♥♥♥♥, i sent a copy of the convo i had with last guy and said he said i have the whole use of whole server (which i knew was a lie) and he said thats not what he said, i then sent a copy of the exact quote the other guy said and guy just went on a big ass rant about how he knew what he was talking about and i was wrong and that i wasnt getting any help to get my server running without lag then said i was bound by contract for 3 more months. my reply was well u have breached ur contract and i will run skip and hop my way to court if they wanted to push it and he then just left convo.

I've had a terrible experience with them. Their support is really bad, they couldn't get my server to work, I tried making it work for six hours, it's a shame a company like thati s the "official partner" of this game. Really, really bad choice.

I was using 4Players, I did try to add mods, even ones updated to the current version would not work with the error showing they were not compatible, after searching I seen the server I was using was running version 1.1.2 and the game was on 2.0.11, I tried changing it in the server.ini file to try and force a update but it did not update even with 4Players Tech telling me it was up to date. I would agree with the top I do not recommend 4Players if you want to use mods. I have not tried any other hosting sites but I can host off my PC with the same mods 4Players said was out of date perfectly. As far as running without mods 4 Players ran with out any real issues though.

I just rented one and tried to upload save, it was garbage; it kept resetting the galaxy and taking 10 minutes to turn back o, to find the whole damn universe wiped every time. I got another host that does USA servers after finding out I got to wait till 3 am to get support; damn worked first try. Server restarts in seconds. It's like the 4net ones send everything to Germany and back every time, and it is such a pain in the ass to try and upload a server.

Like it shouldn't take that long to restart at all. Only catch with new one the same price for two fewer slots but way faster server, and zero issues. I couldn't even get a 4net server started using old save.
Well what I am gonna say is about other game but whatever. So I'm using their server in Valheim and they say that server is updated to the lastest version but mods don't work with server and says that game is incompatible and together with modders we came to the conlusion that this host is crap.

Server hosts all sell you a piece of a PC AKA they run many games on the same computer as virtual machines. These tend to work ok for a few players but if you want to run an active server nothing beats renting your own server from a datacenter. You can buy dedicated servers from the server hosting companies but you will pay double or more for a lesser computer than if you just rent one and host it yourself. If your paying less than maybe $50/ month from any of the server hosting companies you can be assured you are getting only part of a server. Another clue is if you can pay an extra fee to get CPU priority you know your getting part of a server. The $20/month rent part of a PC are fine for low pc intensive games like Minecraft or Rust or other low system req games if it is just you and a couple friends that want to play together. Avorian can get pretty needy pretty fast especially if you want to have 4-5 sectors active per player. Active sectors would be sectors where you have a ship mining or a factory running even when your not in that sector. Typically I prefer to have active. 1. the sector I am currently in. 2. A low tier sector having a ship auto mine iron/titanium/naonite. 3. a ship automining avorian. 1-2 more sectors that have mines or factories making money. This is per player. So you can see the game can get pretty CPU intensive simulating all those sectors at the same time. Factories generating products, NPC ships buying and transporting and selling those products. NPC's attacking and defending the sectors. Your mining ships with 30 mining fighters mining away in a sector while you are off fighting the Wormhole guardian.

How much bandwidth does a typical multiplayer game need? Bandwidth is what eats your server dollar, yen, euro. My favorite MMO Uncharted Waters Online only use about 2~5 MB per client per hour, but then it is 3rd or fourth oldest of MMOs still running and super efficient coding.

I believe I've seen mentioned on here Avorion can run under Linux. Is that with Wine or Steamed? Or is it native? (The above mentioned MMO will only run under Windows since it has a security program to root it to prevent cheating.)

I use Akamai, means smart in Hawaiian (use to be Linode, got bought out by Akamai) for my webserver. About the cheapest rates without all the layers of complex price plans that a lot of server space sellers have. But you gotta do all the setup and if it's lagging gotta make your own adjustments.
