Basically being able to build a faction by carving out territory left by other factions?
Yeah something like that, just seems a waste and a missed opportunity. From the distruction they didn't leave willingly. Obviously that sector was important enough by a faction to setup business so it's probably part (or was) of a trade route or held some strategic importance.
Sure they are great opportunities to salvage resources... if you want to spend the time. That can end up being a huge time sink especially if all you have are a few crappy salvaging turrets. As you get closer to the core their blocks get much much bigger. So if I were to have a choice and depending on my situation at that time it would nice to have the same choice as an abandoned ship.
Right now it doesn't really cost anything to "fix" an abandoned ship. So deconstructing it yields a profit so to speak. The same mechanics could be used or some other "logic" to justify claiming a wrecked station. Part of it could be depending on how much of the station is destroyed present the player with some options like fix all of it or just parts of it to get it minimally functional and then build upon afterwards. Just some idle thoughts.
