(NB: if you have lots of cooldown reduction it will help, which is why I don't usually do this until after Bottan)
(NBNB: while in the galaxy map it's a little fiddly but you can get the thing to show you any particular sector if you enter the coordinates manually. E.g. 145:-281 (the colon is required))
Oh, also, in not entirely unrelated news, you might not have noticed*, but all sectors have x and y coordinates.
*Not being a ♥♥♥♥, you mentioned you're not mathy so I'm not assuming you'd noticed this or made the connection between the weird numbers that are easy to ignore and it actually being useful in some way at some point.
---------
When you get there it will (most likely) be an empty sector (maybe some wrecks) and there will be another beacon. Talk to that beacon. It will give you HALF of the required code. (Either A or B) and then allow you to enter the code. (Not much use if you only have one half)
Then there's a trick because the quest itself will update to give you new coordinates (to find more beacons, the overwhelming majority of whom will only give you the half you already have ... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥)
So what I do is in the quests list when I highlight the quest I select the button to track the quest, and that makes the quest overlay switch to that quest (or popup). And the trick with that is that pretty much anywhere where you see a pair of coordinates listed in the UI (e.g. 145:-281) you can just click on it and it opens up the galaxy map and centers on that particular sector. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ magical.
Using these two things (especially once I figured out how totes amazeballs move missions are (particularly through uncharted space with loads of rifts you don't know about blocking the path, and as I mentioned earlier cooldown reduction (jump range pluses are good, cooldown reduction is _better_ (for move missions)), this dropped exodus from taking literally a whole afternoon to a minor inconvenience that takes a couple of minutes tops.
You _can_ do it with math (the old calculation of the hypotenuse thingy - x squared plus y squared equals z squared) (or google a page for a hypotenuse calculator).
Why would you want to know such a godawful thing in the first place? Because underlying basically _everything_ in the game is the calculation of radial distance of the sector from sector 0:0
It's how as you get closer to the center tech levels go up. It's how weapons do more damage, it's how enemies get stronger (more DPS and more HP). It's how boss ranges are determined. It's how new materials (naonite, trinium etc.) know when to start appearing.
---------
If you googled the wiki and ♥♥♥♥ then you'll no doubt have seen a view of the galaxy with the red/yellow/green/blue/white/orange circles on it. The QoL mod does that for you _in game_.
The only thing it doesn't quite do perfectly is line up with when you can unlock a particular material tier. E.g. you might clear a sector just on the inside of the yellow line for xanion and it doesn't drop the building knowledge. What gives?!?!? Unfair!!!! Bad programmers! No Biscuit!!!
No, if you check the quest sidebar (if you have it displayed for the material unlock quest) the game itself will tell you 'fly closer to the center'. And if it's telling you that you can _never_ get the building knowledge to drop in the current sector no matter what you do.
(Vastly many people get that bit wrong)
I followed all the beacons and managed to get the legendary key, but havent gotten any further yet.
(Older (out of date) wiki stuff says to get the energy inverters you take force cannons to the scrapyard and decompose the force cannons. But I don't think that works anymore. (After one of the 2.x updates) (decomposing still works, you just don't get energy inverters from force cannons anymore for unknown reasons (maybe they changed the recipe??))
