i just don't pick up cargo
If you don't want to spend subsystem slots on just magnets, check the workshop for some mods to help with that. Universal adventuring companion bundles a bunch of functions into one subsystem. Turrets x20 helps you not have to stack multiple turret control systems so you can free up more slots for other things. Try those.
oh ok theres not : (
That little tractor pod docked to your ship will extend your pickup range enough to use standard patrol orders. They're randomized, so all areas of the sector are covered, AND...in the event that a pirate shows up with a couple of his buddies, your loot ship will auto-engage and shoot them down for you.
You can even whack a couple salvaging lasers on there as well, as long as you make sure they're auto-target enabled. Any wreckage that ship flies near enough to will get chipped away over time, especially if you have three or four of these ships doing it.
Defense, salvage, loot pickup...two ships; one piloted by the AI, and one stationary cargo pod docked to it.
Or, alternately, there are mods to extend tractor range.
but im surely open to modding
Not with their code, but maybe with judgment calls regarding game balance.
