If you give them an in-sector order to salvage (not from the map) in the same sector you are in and you give them short range salvage lasers then they will go pretty close to the wreckages to salvage them and that will often put them close enough to pick up random loot that happens to be nearby that was dropped by the ships when they got destroyed. You can equip them with objects to increase their item collection range to increase the chance.

If you order them to salvage with offensive and defensive turrets instead of with salvaging lasers then the turrets have a much longer range and the salvagers are less likely to get close enough to pick up any equipment items that drop. They seem to seek out the resources that are dropped during salvage but not the items, so if they make an item spawn by shooting a wreckage 4km away with a long range weapon they may never get close enough to pick it up.

I don't think you are meant to have ships pick up specific loot for you. It is meant for you to either A) fight the enemy yourself in your ship then pick up any loot that drops manually with your ship or B) give pilots salvage missions (or perhaps other types of missions if you have a pilot with Lucky trait), have them disappear for awhile then show up later with random items, or C) earn money through trade, mining, or whatever other method you can then buy equipment from equipment docks instead of looting them from destroyed enemy ships.

If you are fighting a boss then presumably the loot is good enough that you'll want to loot it yourself to make sure you get all of it, otherwise its not that important and the random loot that you get from scavenger missions or that you buy at equipment docks will be adequate enough.

salvaging lasers, if you have cargo space then r-salvage lasers are a good option otherwise the purifying salvage lasers. Get in close the wreck/item if you do not have ship mods to extend the gather range.

That is what I use any of my drones fighters for after a battle while ship is salvaging, I can send out drones to collect all the left over stuff, then dump what I do not want to keep. 1 squad will do. They don't even have to good for just pickup.

Do you need transporter blocks for that?

I wish there was some non-essential mod slots on the ships. Slots that are used strictly for utility. That way I could pick some of the stuff that's convenient but doesn't stop you from having a powerful ship.

This thread is two years old and that may not have been an option at the time
