E.g. a titanium mining laser will gather iron, titanium and naonite, but not trinium.
Also, that titanium mining laser will mine naonite slightly slower than a naonite mining laser with the same DPS.
Turret vendors and drops have a tech level that gets higher as you get closer to the core, by extension what they are made out of changes with the distance to the core. What im trying to say is they're linked, identical turrets point wise will be stronger if they are of a higher tech and material level.
If you're just looking to max your omicron then sort by dps/slot but dps isn't everything.
A good practice for your automated ships since ambush rate is dictated on omicron but weapons like pulse, rail, cannons, etc are objectively better imo than say teslas or chainguns.
When you get to the point where you're trying to get the best of the best you'll be making your own turret factories. What types of turrets they offer is rolled by chance when the station is founded and where they're placed dictates both their tech and material composition. You may need to place several to get what you're after.
To make things even more complicated even though turrets are different materials their components are identical. Meaning an iron mining laser is made out of the same stuff an avorion one is when you go to make one at a vendor. So hold onto your old turrets and scrap them at a scrapyard for the new stuff. I like to squirrel my components away in a station that doesn't normally sell goods like a refinery because stations will sell your horded components while you're not looking.
