Where do you make or find mining subsystems?
A standard item for every mining captain but the only one I've found so far in 30 hours and 175MB save worth of exploration is a damaged one doing salvage, petty class. Besides the starter one you get.

It just occurred to me, I recall reading about research that if I put that damaged one in it will most likely output a better one. But my point of this question are EQ shops completely random and the 10 or so I've been to just don't have them?

Weird, I've gotten dozens around when I got Naonite. Getting closer to the core and farming pirates may help (I've had my game run around 20 hours unattended, loaded into a system with some of my heavily armed stations).

I did quite a bit of exploring around the starting area, didn't realize the galactic nature of time and space is built in. Just got to nanoite. Haven't even found the tier III build book yet. I presume will be at the first EQ dock I find, but if this game is ARAM then randomness rules
Without a little luck you're going to have a hard time finding an excess of anything valuable, the economy got shattered by the Xsotan, right? Plus there's all the miners already out there.

You don't have to have a mining subsystem to do the job, you can take the easy pickings, leave a note in the high-count systems, the galaxy map searches the note text too so you can add an "xyz" note in a sector, find "xyz" on the galaxy map, that'll highlight them all. When you do find mining subsystems send your guys to those to finish cleaning them out.

Get yourself a nice little stable of Explorer captains and keep them busy. Three is a nice number, six might or might not be getting a little excessive.

Equipment Shops, Random Subsystem Drops, Secret Caches, and occasionally Faction Rewards.

Previous versions of Avorion had 'weighted drops', by which you could destroy civilian miners or traders for their respective subsystems, I'm not sure if this mechanic still exists, but hey, find a faction you're enemy with, go to energy signature sources in search of civilian miners, blow them up.

Yeah I found abandoned shipyard because they attacked a xsotan getting tons of turret subsystems from it so I think you're right about the subsystems by station type.

For everyone with these problems.

1. leave small ships (2 Crew) at EQ Docks and check it every 20 min (or restart the game for new items) - With this you can check 20 EQ docks in 5 min.

1a. use Alliance ships if you run out of allowed ships.

2. get a subsystem that identifies treasures for 40+ km and a mass sig scanner. You will make 100k +2-3 Subsystems all 2-5 min in iron area and more to the core. You also find Mines to sell for a lot of money.

3. Use Marauder Captain with salvage lasers on a mission. He will make 5-10 Items / Subsystems per 30 min.

Unless you play in babyseal difficulty it is a game about getting big as a faction. So what ever you do it will always not be enough.

Got 5 Mining Ships? Well get them 10 Laser size 4 Xanion+, 10 Wings for mining and Max Size with Defense turrets and an escort each. Same for Salvage, exporation, Adventures.

Your issues let me think you only saw 5% of the game size :) (which is ok!)

Great minds think a like, this leaving small kine at EQ, Research, and Depots in each faction was the solution I thought of last night so you don't need to fly every where to sell or search from the interior.

The ship limit I just finished researching since you could end up with hundreds just for this purpose. And noticed the thread update. The last bit you suggest, using alliance ships I didn't see are they from your faction or player alliances?

The others:
1. Get boarding fighters and take over pirates. limitless

2. Claim abandoned ships in no man's land.

3. A mod to make all ship builds only require iron.

create your own alliance - so it is a fraction of its own. with its own standing. aside from your personal player standing and ship count.
